Kansas State Summer Baseball Update: July 7

MANHATTAN, Kan. Each Monday, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.


Coastal Plain League

The Fayetteville (N.C.) Swap Dogs went 2-2 last week, finishing the first half of the season in second place in the South Division at 15-13... Sophomore-to-be Jason King, coming off an injury, was 3-for-14 last week, dropping his average to .256 with five doubles, two triples, on home run and eight RBI... His best game came on June 30 against Gastonia as the switch-hitter went 2-for-4 with one run scored... Carter Jurica was 2-for-9 last week, which lowered his season average to .247 with three doubles and 14 RBI... On July 5 against Gastonia, Jurica was 2-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and a stolen base.


Jayhawk Baseball League

The Nevada (Mo.) Griffons, with Thomas Rooke and Daniel Dellasega, are 17-10 on the season... Rooke holds an 0-1 record and a 7.20 ERA in seven appearances, including four starts... On July 2 against the Ozark Generals, Rooke took a no decision after allowing four runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings... Dellasega has improved his season average to .333 with two doubles, one home run and three RBI... Jordan Cruz is slated to join the Derby Twins later in the summer.


M.I.N.K. League

Drew Biery, playing for the Topeka Golden Giants, was hitting .295 (13-for-44) with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI as of two weeks ago... Statistics for the Golden Giants have not been recently updated.

Collegiate League

Junior-to-be Justin Bloxom was on fire last week for the 15-9 McKinney Marshalls, who hold a four-game lead in the Texas Collegiate League... Bloxom went 9-for-18 with one double, three home runs and eight RBI... His average jumped 90 points from .160 to .250... On the season, he has recorded two doubles, five home runs and 15 RBI... Bloxom’s five homers are tops in the TCL, while he is tied for third in RBI...His best game last week was in a 7-2 win over East Texas where he went 3-for-4 with one home run and three RBI... Justin Murray, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics but has yet to sign with the club, joined the East Texas PumpJacks two weeks ago... His only start of the week came on July 5 against McKinney where he allowed four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings, but took a no decision... He also struck out eight Marshalls while issuing just one walk... In three starts, the Manhattan, Kan., native is 0-1 with a 7.06 ERA for the 11-13 PumpJacks...


West Coast Collegiate League

Senior-to-be Dane Yelovich continues to lead the 6-14 Moses Lake Pirates in average as he is the only player on the squad over .300... Last week, Yelovich went 6-for-24, which lowered his average to .325 with five doubles and 11 RBI... He is also 9-for-15 in stolen base attempts ... Against Kitsap on July 3, Yelovich was 2-for-5 with two RBI, one run scored and one stolen base... Junior-to-be A.J. Morris is also playing for the Moses Lake Pirates and holds a 1-0 record with a 1.73 ERA in four games started... He has allowed just five earned runs in 26.0 innings with a 31-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio... Morris took the win on July 3 against Kitsap as he allowed two runs on four hits in 6.0 innings and struck out nine batters.


Central Plains Baseball League

Future seniors Lance Hoge (pitcher) and Rob Vaughn (catcher), junior Adam Muenster (infield), sophomore Justin Lindsey (pitcher) and incoming freshman Nick Martini (outfielder) are playing with the Junction City Generals this summer, but updated stats are not available.


2008 Draft Picks

Ben Hornbeck: In two appearances last week, which spanned just 0.2 innings, Ben Hornbeck allowed four runs on four hits... A 32nd-round pick by the Oakland Athletics and playing for the Vancouver Canadians in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, Hornbeck has no record with a 13.50 ERA in 2.2 innings over four appearances... The Canadians hold an 8-12 record and are in fourth place in the West Division.


Trevor Hurley: Trevor Hurley saw two appearances this past week... Against Yakima on July 1, Hurley allowed two runs on one hit with four walks and two strikeouts in one inning... Against Eugene on July 5, Hurley pitched one scoreless inning while allowing one hit... A 26th-round pick by the Texas Rangers, Hurley is 1-0 with one save and a 6.43 ERA in six games pitched... Hurley and his Spokane Indians are in first place in the East Division of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League with a 15-5 record.


Nate Tenbrink: Nate Tenbrink, playing for the Everett Aqua Sox in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, went 6-for-27 with one home run and two RBI last week to raise his average... In 20 games played, Tenbrink is hitting .211 with one double, three home runs and 10 RBI... On July 4 against Yakima, Tenbrink went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run... Two days later against Yakima, Tenbrink was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and two runs scored... Everett is in second place in the West Division with an 8-12 record.


Byron Wiley: After seeing little action the first two weeks of the season, Byron Wiley has played in five-straight games for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League... A 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Wiley went 3-for-17 with two doubles and three RBI during that span... His best game of the week came on July 4 against Helena as he went 2-for-3 with one double, two walks, two RBI and two runs scored... His season average has improved to .190 with two doubles, one triple and three RBI... Billings is currently leading the Pioneer North Division with a 13-7 record.


Daniel Edwards (25th round, Philadelphia Phillies) and Justin Murray (29th round, Oakland Athletics) have not signed.


Other K-State Pros

Adam Cowart: Adam Cowart started one game last week a July 4 contest against New Britain and took a no decision after allowing three earned runs on six hits in 6.0 innings... He also walked one and struck out five... Pitching for Double A Connecticut in the Eastern League, Cowart holds a 6-6 record with a 4.27 ERA in 97.0 innings pitched... The Defenders, an affiliate for the San Francisco Giants, are 44-44.


Eric Eymann: Double A Chattanooga shortstop Eric Eymann bounced back from a week ago as he went 8-for-22 with one double, one triple, two home runs and six RBI... His week was highlighted by a 4-for-5 effort against West Tennessee on July 3 where he recorded two singles, one triple and one home run finishing a double away from the cycle while driving in three runs... A 2005 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Eymann improved his average to .300 and 21 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 47 RBI... Chattanooga, which finished the first half of the season fourth in the Southern League North Division with a 37-33 record, holds a 10-9 mark in the second half, which stands third in the division.


Jared Goedert: Jared Goedert, playing for the Kinston Indians in the Class A Advanced Carolina League, went 5-for-20 last week, dropping his average to .268... A 2006 draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, Goedert has seen action in 75 games and has recorded 15 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 42 RBI... Despite his recent struggles, Goedert went 2-for-3 against Wilmington on July 2... Kinston, who finished the first half of the season in second place in the Southern Division, is in second place at 9-7 to begin the second half.


Steve Murphy: Steve Murphy, a 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, went 4-for-20 last week with one home run and three RBI...  Against Arkansas on July 6, Murphy was 2-for-4, including a two-run home run as part of a five-run first inning... Murphy’s average for Double A Frisco is .277 with 23 doubles, five triples, 12 home runs and 59 RBI... Frisco, which won the first half of the Texas League Southern Division, has started the second half of the season on fire with a 13-3 record.


Eli Rumler: Playing for Class A South Bend in the Midwest League, Eli Rumler was 4-for-22 last week with one RBI... Rumler hit safely in four-straight games from July 1-5 before ending his streak on July 6 against Fort Wayne... However, Rumler did walk twice and scored both times against the Wizards... Drafted in 2007 by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Rumler is hitting .215 on the season with 13 doubles, one home run and 17 RBI... South Bend leads the second half of the season in the Eastern Division at 12-6.


Carlos Torres: A 2004 draft pick by the Chicago White Sox, Carols Torres took the win in his only start last week, defeating Mobile on July 2... Against the BayBears, Torres allowed just one run on six hits in 6.0 innings, while walking one and striking out three... Pitching for Class Double A Birmingham, Torres holds an 9-4 record, tied for the most wins in the Southern League... Torres’ 3.14 ranks seventh in the league, while he is fourth in strikeouts at 87... The Barons, who won the first half of the South Division regular season, leads the South in the second half at 12-7.
