MANHATTAN, Kan. - Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes a look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.
Alaska Baseball League
Junior-to-be pitchers James Allen and Matt Applegate led the Mat-Su Miners to a pair of wins last week... On Wednesday against the Anchorage Bucs, Applegate took the win after pitching 6.0 solid innings, allowing three runs on six hits with no walks and a strikeout... Allen threw the final inning, a scoreless frame with a strikeout, as Mat-Su won, 10-5... Allen came back to earn the win in relief on Sunday against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots when he tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing four hits with no walks and two strikeouts in a 2-1 Miner win... In four starts this summer, Applegate is 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA with three walks and 11 strikeouts ... The right-hander has allowed six earned runs in 27.0 innings, while he is limiting opponents to a .200 batting average... Allen is 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA and two saves in 15.0 innings of work... The Wildcat closer has nine walks and nine strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .255 batting average... The Miners are 18-8 this summer, including a 16-7 mark in ABL play.
California Collegiate League
Juniors-to-be Mike Kindel and Justin Lindsey were solid last week for San Luis Obispo, leading the Blues to a trio of wins... Kindel went 8-for-18 (.444) with three doubles, three steals, a RBI and four runs scored in five games last week... He was 3-for-5 with a double, a RBI and two steals against the San Jose Seals on Monday, while he recorded two hits and a double in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday... Kindel pushed his average to .313 (26-for-83) with six doubles, two triples, 13 RBI and nine steals in 24 games this summer... Lindsey led the Blues to a win on Saturday against Santa Maria as he started and worked four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with no walks and six strikeouts... In three starts, the right-hander is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA with four walks and 13 strikeouts in 14.2 innings... The Blues are 20-11 overall and 14-7 in the CCL.
Central Plains Baseball League
Four K-State freshmen the 2010 season - Jake Doller (pitcher), Chase Graskewicz (catcher), Ryan Moore (outfielder) and Tyler Sturges (pitcher) - as well as a trio of signees - Johnny Fasola (pitcher/infielder), Shawn Lewick (pitcher) and Jared King (infielder) - are playing this summer for the Junction City Generals... Updated player stats for the Generals were not available.
Coastal Plain League
Senior-to-be Kent Urban saw action in four games last week for the Petersburg Generals... The first baseman went 3-for-15 (.200) with five RBI... He was hitless but drove in a run against Outer Banks on Thursday before going 3-for-4 with four RBI against Edenton on Friday... In 12 games this summer, Urban is 8-for-47 (.170) with two doubles and nine RBI... Hunter took a hard-luck loss on his third start of the summer on Thursday... He pitched all six innings for the visiting Generals in a seven-inning game against Outer Banks, allowing six runs - only three of which were earned - on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts... This summer, Hunter is 0-1 with a 2.81 ERA, while he has recorded seven walks and 20 strikeouts... Petersburg is 9-30 this summer, including a 2-9 second-half mark, to sit fifth in the north division.
Jayhawk Baseball League
Junior-to-be Matt Giller led the El Dorado Broncos to a win last week at Hays... The Manhattan, Kan., product went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored on Sunday... He also had a hit on Friday against the Larks... Sophomore-to-be Blair DeBord went 0-for-6 with a run scored in two games against Hays... Updated statistics were not available for the Broncos... Through games played on July 4, Giller was hitting .235 (12-for-51) with a double, three home runs and 16 RBI... His .431 slugging percentage was fourth on the team... DeBord was 7-for-54 (.130) with a double, a homer and three RBI... Sophomore-to-be Nick Cocking is playing for the Liberal Bee Jays... Through games on Wednesday, Cocking was hitting .250 (7-for-28) with a double, a triple, four RBI and six runs scored.
Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association
Junior-to-be Kayvon Bahramzadeh earned his first win of the summer as a member of the Palm Springs Power on Tuesday... The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings, allowing four hits with three walks and six strikeouts to lead the Power to a 4-0 victory over the OC Pioneers... In three starts this season, Bahramzadeh is 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA after allowing just two earned runs in 15.0 innings... Another junior-to-be, Jake Brown, saw his first action since last month as he played in four games last week... He was a defensive replacement on Wednesday before going 0-for-3 with a walk and run scored on Thursday... He also started against the San Diego Force on Friday and the LA Thrashers on Saturday... In nine games, including five starts, Brown is 1-for-13 (.077) with a RBI and three walks... The Power continue to lead the SCC with a 28-2 overall record, including an 18-1 mark in league play.
Topeka Golden Giants (Independent)
Sophomores-to-be Tanner Witt and Robert Hawkins are joined by another current Wildcat, Brandon Faulkner, and an incoming players Cody Faulkner and Ross Kivett on the Topeka Golden Giants roster... Witt recorded two hits and two RBI Thursday against Rockford, while Hawkins tossed a scoreless eighth inning... Through games on Wednesday, Brandon Faulkner was 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA, allowing 11 earned runs in 36.2 innings, while walking 14 and striking out 39... Cody Faulkner was 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 16.0 innings, while Hawkins was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA... Witt was hitting .222 (12-for-54) with two doubles, 11 RBI and seven steals, while holding a .593 on-base percentage... Kivett was hitting .171 (7-for-41) with a double and five RBI.
Tri-State Collegiate League
Sophomore-to-be Brad Clement is playing for Northern Ohio Baseball... The infielder helped his team go 3-0 last week with a 10-7 win over Canton on Thursday and a doubleheader sweep over LDS Monarchs Blue on Sunday... Through games played July 3, Clement was hitting .238 (5-for-21) with two doubles, a home run and nine RBI... Northern Ohio is 14-8 this summer to sit third in the league.
Nick Martini went through the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials last week... The outfielder recorded four hits in the six games, including a two-hit effort in the opening game... He also drove in two runs on Wednesday to tie for team-high honors, while he was 1-for-4 with a run scored on Friday... Martini will rejoin the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League... Junior-college transfer Wade Hinkle is playing in the Haarlemse Honkbalweek in the Netherlands as part of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Star team... Through three games in the event, USA is 1-2 and Hinkle is 0-for-4 in two starts... The United States continues play on Monday and Thursday against host country, the Netherlands, before taking on Cuba on Friday, Chinese Taipei on Saturday and Japan on Sunday.
Drew Biery: A 2009 draft pick by the San Francisco Giants and a member of the High A San Jose Giants, Biery was placed on the 7-Day Disabled List following a throat contusion on July 5... In 68 games this season, Biery is hitting .276 with six doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 40 RBI... San Jose clinched the first half of the California League North Division, but is just 5-13 in the second half.
Justin Bloxom: Justin Bloxom, a 2009 selection by the Washington Nationals, went 2-for-12 with a home run and three RBI in three games last week for the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League... On Tuesday against West Virginia, Bloxom pounded a ninth-inning two-run homer... He came back on Wednesday to hit a sacrifice fly against the Power... In 83 games this season, Bloxom is hitting .315 with 25 doubles, four triples, eight homers and 56 RBI to go along with nine stolen bases... The first baseman ranks second in the league in hits (105) and total bases (162), fourth in RBI, fifth in average and doubles (25), sixth in OPS (.846), eighth in slugging percentage (.486) and tied for ninth in runs scored (54)... The Suns are seventh northern division second-half standings at 6-11.
Adam Cowart: Cowart, a second-year pitcher for the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, took a no decision in a start on Friday against Grand Prairie after allowing seven runs on 11 hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings... The Wingnuts went on to win the game, 8-7... In 11 starts for Wichita, Cowart is 3-5 with a 4.48 ERA with just 14 walks and 46 strikeouts in 64.1 innings of work... After finishing fifth in the north division first-half standings, Wichita is tied for first in the division with a 5-1 second-half mark.
Eric Eymann: A 2005 selection by the Cincinnati Reds, Eymann recorded three hits in three games last week for Double A Carolina... The first baseman went 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored at Chattanooga on Tuesday and closed out his week by going 2-for-5 with a run scored at West Tenn on Saturday... Eymann is hitting .259 in 78 games this year with 17 doubles, a triple, five homers and 33 RBI... The Mudcats lead the second-half standings in the north division with an 11-8 record.
Jared Goedert: Goedert, who was called up to Triple A Columbus on June 4, hit a homer in four-straight games during the week to move his Triple A season total to 15 in just 33 games... Of his 15 Triple A homers this season, 10 came in the month of June, becoming the first Clipper player with at least 10 homers in a month since 2003... He has also reached base in 22-straight games, the longest active streak in the International League... Goedert, who is on a 10-game hitting streak, was 11-for-31 (.355) with two doubles, four home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored in seven games last week... The third baseman/designated hitter hit a two-run double in the ninth on Monday that proved to be the eventual game-winning hit at Toledo... He came back with solo home runs against the Mud Hens on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday with a two-run homer on Thursday... In 33 games for Columbus, Goedert is hitting a solid .326 with nine doubles, 15 home runs and 32 RBI... His average, slugging percentage (.735) and OPS (1.118) would lead the International League if he met the required minimum of at-bats, but Goedert is already tied for seventh in home runs despite limited action... A 2006 draft pick by Cleveland, Goedert was hitting .325 with 14 doubles, seven homers and 32 RBI in 44 games in Double A Akron before being called up... Columbus sits atop the west division at 55-36, 7.5 games ahead of second-place Indianapolis.
Lance Hoge: A 2009 draft selection of the New York Mets, Hoge was placed on the Voluntarily Retired List on June 28, two days after his final appearance on June 26 when he threw a perfect inning of relief against Ashville... In 18 appearances this year, Hoge went 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA and one save... He allowed 15 earned runs on 40 hits in 46.0 innings with a 33-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio... He concluded his two-year minor league career with a 3-2 record and a 3.53 ERA.
Ben Hornbeck: Hornbeck, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, took his fourth-straight no decision on Friday after allowing two runs on seven hits with seven walks and five strikeouts in 4.2 innings against San Jose... Hornbeck's last decision was a loss against Visalia on June 18, while his last win came against Bakersfield on June 8... In 10 starts in High A, Hornbeck, who began the season at Double A Midland, is 1-2 with a 4.70 ERA in 51.2 innings, while allowing 23 walks and striking out 59... Stockton is fourth in the north division with a 6-6 second-half record.
Trevor Hurley: A 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star and one of the top closers in the league, Hurley was promoted to High A Bakersfield of the California League on Friday... In his first appearance in High A, Hurley allowed one run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts in two innings at Visalia on Saturday... A 2008 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Hurley was 0-1 with a 1.43 ERA and 11 saves in 26 appearances in Low A... He allowed just six earned runs in 37.2 innings pitched with 10 walks and 50 strikeouts, the second most in the South Atlantic League among closers with at least five saves this season... His 11 saves are tied for fifth in the league, while he would rank second in ERA if he had pitched the required minimum of innings... Hurley's old team, the Hickory Crawdads, are second in the northern division second-half standings at 10-8, while Bakersfield leads the California League North Division in the second half with a 12-6 mark.
Carter Jurica: In four starts last week for Salem-Keizer of the Class A Short Season Northwest League, Jurica went 5-for-18 (.278) with a double... His double came against Vancouver on Tuesday, while he recorded a two-hit contest at Tri-City on Thursday... In 20 games this season, Jurica, a 2009 third-round draft selection by San Francisco, is hitting .219 (16-for-73) with a double, a triple, a home run, six RBI and nine runs scored... The Volcanoes are 10-13 to sit second in the west division.
A.J. Morris: A fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals in 2009, Morris continued his rehab assignment for the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Nationals with a five-inning start on Thursday against the GCL Astros... Morris allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts in his longest rehab outing in four starts... The right-hander, who will soon rejoin the Potomac Nationals of the High A Carolina League, holds a 1-2 record and a 3.91 ERA in 10 starts for Potomac... The P-Nats are second in the northern division in the second half at 8-7.
Adam Muenster: A 29th-round draft choice by Cincinnati in this year's draft, Muenster went 1-for-9 (.111) with three walks and a run scored in three games last week for the Arizona League (AZL) Reds... His hit came on Tuesday against the AZL Rangers, while he walked twice and scored a run Thursday against the AZL Indians... In 15 games this season, Muenster is 11-for-52 (.212) with two doubles, five RBI and seven walks... The AZL Reds are tied for third in the central division at 7-10.
Justin Murray: Murray worked his second relief appearance of the season and the first since being promoted to Double A Midland when he threw 1.2 scoreless innings on Saturday at Arkansas... The right-hander was able to work around two hits and two walks to keep the Travelers off the scoreboard... For his efforts, the 2008 selection by Oakland earned his first hold of the season... In four Double A appearances this year, Murray is 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched... He earned a promotion from High A Stockton on June 18 after going 6-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 12 starts for the Ports... Midland is second in the Texas League south division with a 7-8 second-half record.
Nate Tenbrink: A 2008 selection by Seattle and a member of Double A West Tenn, Tenbrink went 5-for-17 (.294) with a double, a home run and five walks in six games last week... The infielder/outfielder was 2-for-3 with a double against Carolina on Friday before going 1-for-3 with a solo home run on Saturday... In 25 games in Double A, Tenbrink is hitting .288 (21-for-73) with two doubles, a triple, four homers and 14 RBI since being promoted to the club on May 26... West Tenn is fifth in the Southern League North Division second-half standings with a 6-13 record.
Carlos Torres: Torres was named the International League starting pitcher for the 2010 Triple A All-Star Game, which will be played July 14 in Allentown, Pa... It marks his second-straight Triple A All-Star appearance, while it is his third all-star selection in the Minor Leagues after being named a 2008 Southern League (Double A) All-Star... A 2004 selection by the Chicago White Sox, Torres started on Tuesday and worked a relief appearance on Sunday before his all-star start... The right-hander took the win against Durham on Tuesday when he allowed three runs on just two hits with five walks and seven strikeouts in six innings of work... He then allowed a run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts in two innings at Gwinnett in a game that Charlotte won, 9-4... Torres, the latest former Wildcat to play in the Major Leagues, is 7-5 with a 3.38 ERA in 112.0 innings pitched with 48 walks and 105 strikeouts... He is second in the league in innings pitched and strikeouts, tied for eighth in wins and 11th in ERA... Charlotte heads into the all-star break second in the south division at 47-45.
Rob Vaughn: Vaughn, a 30th-round pick in the 2009 draft by the Chicago White Sox, played in three games last week for the Great Falls Voyagers of the Rookie Pioneer League... He was a defensive replacement against Billings on Tuesday and earned the start at Helena on Wednesday, going 0-for-4... He rebounded on Saturday, going 2-for-4 against Missoula... In seven games this season, Vaughn is 2-for-17 (.118)... Great Falls is tied for the north division lead at 12-9.
Byron Wiley: A 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds in 2008 but a free agent signee by Arizona this season, Wiley is a member of the Visalia Rawhide of the California League... The outfielder has not played since June 14... In nine games this season for Visalia, Wiley is hitting .286 (10-for-35) with a homer and seven RBI... The Rawhide are second in the south division second-half standings at 10-8.
