Kansas State Summer Baseball Update: July 21

MANHATTAN, Kan. Each Monday, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

 

Central Plains Baseball League

Future seniors Lance Hoge (pitcher) and Rob Vaughn (catcher), junior Adam Muenster (infield), sophomore Justin Lindsey (pitcher) and incoming freshman Nick Martini (outfielder) are playing for the Junction City Generals this summer... Muenster leads the team with a .333 average (17-for-51) with one double, one home run and five RBI... Martini is hitting .293 (17-for-68) with four doubles, eight RBI and an on-base percentage of .451... Vaughn, who hasn’t played in four weeks due to injury, is .257 (9-for-35) on the season with three doubles, one home run and six RBI... In six appearances, three of which were starts, Lindsey holds a 1-2 record with a 2.19 ERA in 24.2 innings... The sophomore right hander has struck out 25 batters as opposed to just nine walks... Hoge is 1-1 in four appearances (three starts) with a 0.00 ERA in 17.2 innings... All seven runs Hoge has allowed have been unearned... The senior-to-be has walked eight and struck out 19... The No. 3 seed in the National Baseball Congress Midwest Regional, Junction City defeated Pratt on Sunday to move on to the semifinals in the winner’s bracket.

 

Coastal Plain League

The Fayetteville (N.C.) Swap Dogs suffered through a rough week going 1-5, but future sophomores Jason King and Carter Jurica enjoyed individual success ... King went 5-for-15 with one RBI, including a pair of 2-for-4 games... King’s average jumped 10 points to .267 with six doubles, two triples, one home run and 11 RBI... Jurica bounced back from a 1-for-17 week by going 5-for-20 with one double, improving his season average to .224 with four doubles and 14 RBI... On Tuesday Fayetteville’s lone win of the week Jurica went 2-for-4 with one double and one run scored... The Swap Dogs, who finished the first half of the season second in the south division, are 5-10 to begin the second half.

 

Jayhawk Baseball League

Thomas Rooke and Daniel Dellasega have each spent part of the summer playing for the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons... Rooke holds a 0-1 record and a 7.20 ERA in seven appearances, including four starts, but has not pitched in two weeks... In 15 games, Dellasega is hitting .277 with three doubles, one triple, one home run and six RBI... On Tuesday against Liberal, the junior-to-be went 2-for-6 with one double, one triple and three RBI... Senior-to-be Jordan Cruz recently joined the Derby Twins and has played in three games (as of Wednesday)... The outfielder is 1-for-12 with two walks.

 

Texas Collegiate League

After raising his average 106 points in a two-week stretch, junior-to-be Justin Bloxom went 5-for-20 last week with two walks and one RBI... Playing for the TCL-leading McKinney Marshalls, who hold a 4.5-game lead with a 21-14 record, Bloxom was 1-for-5 with one RBI on Saturday against Brazos Valley... He also recorded a pair of two-hit games, one on Tuesday against Coppell and another on Friday against East Texas... On the season, Bloxom holds a .253 average with three doubles, six home runs and 19 RBI... His six homers still leads the TCL, two better than second place... Furthermore, his 19 RBI are fifth in the league... Justin Murray, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics but has yet to sign with the club, joined the East Texas PumpJacks on June 21... His only start last week came on Sunday against Coppell as he took his second-straight no decision after allowing one run on two hits in 7.0 innings... The Manhattan, Kan., native is 0-1 with a 4.45 ERA and 27 strikeouts... The PumpJacks are in third place in the TCL with a 17-19 record.

 

West Coast Collegiate Baseball League

Outfielder Dane Yelovich and pitcher A.J. Morris, playing for the 9-19 Moses Lake Pirates, were selected to the 2008 WCCBL All-Star Game and will play for the East Team in Tuesday night’s contest... Yelovich was 4-for-21 with one RBI, two runs scored and was 5-for-6 in stolen bases last week... Against Bellingham on Saturday, the senior-to-be went 2-for-4 with two runs scored... He also recorded three steals against Bend Elks last Monday... For the season, Yelovich is hitting .280 with six doubles, 14 RBI and is 17-for-24 in stolen base attempts... Morris, a future junior, took a no decision against Bellingham on Friday... The right hander worked 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts... Morris is 1-1 on the year with a 2.31 ERA and 43 strikeouts... His 2.31 ERA ranks ninth in the WCCBL, while his 43 strikeouts are second in the league, just one back of the league leader... Furthermore, he is holding opponents to a .188 average, which ranks fifth.

 

M.I.N.K. League

Drew Biery, playing for the Topeka Golden Giants, was hitting .295 (13-for-44) with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI as of June 23, but updated statistics are not available... The Golden Giants, however, defeated the Air Capital Astros in the first round of the National Baseball Congress Midwest Regional on Saturday, but were defeated by Newton on Sunday.

 

Walter Johnson Baseball League

Matt Giller, who redshirted the 2008 season, is playing for the Salina Blue Jays this summer, but updated statistics are not available... The Blue Jays, just like the Topeka Golden Giants, won their first-round game in the National Baseball Congress Midwest Regional, defeating the Wichita Sluggers, but lost to the Community Bank Cowboys in the second round.

 

2008 Draft Picks

Ben Hornbeck: Playing for the Vancouver Canadians in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, Ben Hornbeck went 0-1 last week in two appearances... Against Salem-Keizer on Tuesday, Hornbeck threw one scoreless inning and struck out one batter in a 9-8 loss... On Friday against Eugene, the left hander was saddled with the loss after allowing four earned runs on four hits in 1.2 innings... A 32nd-round pick by the Oakland Athletics, Hornbeck is 0-1 on the season with a 7.88 ERA in 8.0 innings... The Canadians hold a 13-20 record and are third in the west division.

 

Trevor Hurley: A 26th-round pick by the Texas Rangers, Trevor Hurley picked up the win in his only appearance last week for the Spokane Indians... Hurley threw three scoreless innings as he allowed four hits and two walks and also struck out three batters in a 5-4 victory over Yakima... On the season, Hurley is 2-0 with a 2.87 ERA in 15.2 innings... Spokane, in the east division of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, leads the division with a 25-8 record, five games ahead of second-place Boise.

 

Nate Tenbrink: Nate Tenbrink, who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the seventh round, went 6-for-19 with one double, seven runs scored, three walks and three stolen bases last week... His best game came on Saturday against Salem-Keizer when he went 3-for-4 with one double and one run scored... In 32 games for the Everett Aqua Sox in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, Tenbrink is hitting .231 with four doubles, four home runs and 12 RBI... His four homers are tied for fourth in the league... Everett is in second place in the west division with a 15-18 record.

 

Byron Wiley: Byron Wiley recorded a productive week for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League... In three games played, the 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds went 4-for-11 with one double, one triple and seven RBI... Against Odgen on Friday, Wiley went 2-for-4 with one double, one triple and five RBI to lead Billings to a 14-7 victory... In the last week, Billings broke away with the north division lead at 20-12, three games ahead of second place.

 

Daniel Edwards (25th round, Philadelphia Phillies) and Justin Murray (29th round, Oakland Athletics) have not signed.

 

Other K-State Pros

Adam Cowart: In two starts last week, Adam Cowart, a 2006 draft pick by San Francisco, went 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA for Double A Connecticut ... Against New Hampshire last Monday, Cowart allowed one run on seven hits in 5.0 innings to pick up the win in a 4-1 victory... Cowart holds an 8-6 record on the season with a 3.93 ERA, while recording 52 strikeouts issuing 21 walks... He is tied for eighth in the Eastern League in wins and 17th in the league in ERA... The Defenders are in fourth place in the northern division at 51-49.

 

Eric Eymann: Eric Eymann, a 2005 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds and a 2008 Southern League All-Star, was 8-for-23 last week with one double and two RBI... Playing for Double A Chattanooga, Eymann’s best game came against Mobile on Wednesday as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI... For the season, Eymann is batting .298 with 23 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 52 RBI... He is tied for ninth in the league in doubles, 12th in RBI, tied for 19th in triples, and tied for 20th in average... The Chattanooga Lookouts are in fourth place in the north division at 13-17 to begin the second half of the season.

 

Jared Goedert: Jared Goedert, playing for the Kinston Indians in the Class A Advanced Carolina League, went 1-for-14 last week with one RBI and three runs scored... His lone RBI last week came last Monday against Winston-Salem... He also went 1-for-3 with three runs scored against Frederick on Thursday... Goedert’s average now sits at .267 with 17 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 51 RBI... Kinston leads the second half of the southern division with a 17-11 record.

 

Steve Murphy: Steve Murphy, a 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, was 6-for-25 last week with three doubles, two home runs and two RBI... Playing for Double A Frisco in the Texas League, Murphy went 3-for-4 with a solo home run against San Antonio on Tuesday... Murphy also went 2-for-4 with another solo home run and one double against Corpus Christi on Sunday... A starter for the South Division in the Texas League All-Star Game, Murphy holds a .273 average with 27 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs and 65 RBI... He is second in the league in doubles, third in triples, ninth in home runs and seventh in RBI... The Roughriders, who won the first half of the Texas League South Division, have stayed hot as they lead the second half of the season with a 19-10 record, four games ahead of second place.

 

Eli Rumler: Playing for Class A South Bend in the Midwest League, Eli Rumler raised his average after a 7-for-18 week with one double and four RBI... A 2007 draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Rumler recorded three two-hit games against Kane County on Monday, Wisconsin on Thursday and Cedar Rapids on Sunday... He also recorded back-to-back two-RBI games against Cedar Rapids on both Saturday and Sunday... Rumler raised his average to .227 with 15 doubles, one home run and 22 RBI... South Bend is tied with Lansing for first place in the eastern division with a 19-11 second-half record.

 

Carlos Torres: After being called up to Triple A Charlotte of the International League on July 10 and pitching in one game, Carlos Torres was sent back to Double A Birmingham on Thursday... A 2004 draft pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2004, Torres pitched in one game last week for the Barons, throwing one scoreless inning at Montgomery on Friday... This season in Double A, Torres is 9-5 with a 3.20 ERA, while walking 29 and striking out 92... Torres is tied for first in the Southern League in wins, seventh in ERA and tied for fifth in strikeouts... He is also third in the league in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched) at 1.14... Torres was selected to participate in the 2008 Southern League All-Star Game, but did not pitch as he was in Triple A.
