MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.
Alaska Baseball League
A senior for the 2012 season, Matt Applegate did not pitch last week for the Mat-Su Miners of the Alaska Baseball League… In five games this summer, including two starts, the right-hander is 3-1 with a 3.14 ERA, allowing five runs on nine hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in 14.1 innings of work… The Miners are 17-17-1 on the year, including a 15-15 mark in ABL play.
California Collegiate League
Tanner Witt, a future junior, played in five games last week for the San Luis Obispo Blues of the California Collegiate League, going 3-for-14 with two RBI and two stolen bases… The shortstop drove in a run on Wednesday against Santa Barbara before going 2-for-4 with a stolen base on Thursday against the Foresters… In 30 games this summer, Witt is hitting .250 (26-for-104) with two doubles and 16 RBI, while he is a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen base attempts… Hinkle is also a member of the Blues, but did not play last week… Hinkle is hitting .211 (15-for-71) with four doubles and 10 RBI in 21 games… San Luis Obispo is 30-12 overall and 21-11 in the California Collegiate League, which is second in the league.
Cape Cod Baseball League
A member of the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League, Jared King ended his week on a four-game hitting streak… The outfielder went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored on Wednesday against Cotuit… Following a pair of 1-for-3 games on Friday and Saturday, King had two hits and drove in a run on Sunday against Bourne… In 27 games for Falmouth, King is hitting .187 (14-for-75) with a double, 14 walks and seven RBI… Falmouth is 17-19, which is fourth in the western division.
Jayhawk Baseball League
Jared Moore and Ross Kivett, sophomores for the 2012 campaign, are playing for the Liberal Bee Jays, who are 28-14 this season and 18-13 in Jayhawk League play… Kivett enjoyed a 4-for-5 game with a RBI on Tuesday against Hays before tallying two hits and a RBI on Saturday against El Dorado… Moore threw three innings of relief on Tuesday, allowing three runs… Updated statistics for the Bee Jays are not available… Through games played on Tuesday, Kivett was hitting .338 (27-for-80) with three doubles, one triple, a home run and 11 RBI… Moore had allowed eight earned runs on 24 hits with 25 strikeouts in 29.2 innings pitched.
Perfect Game Collegiate League
A trio of seniors for 2012 – Mike Kindel, Dan Klein and Kayvon Bahramzadeh – all played last week for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles of the Perfect Game Collegiate League… Bahramzadeh started the week with a seven-inning complete game against Watertown on Tuesday, earning the win after allowing one run on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts… In four games, including two starts, Bahramzadeh is 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA, allowing two runs on 16 hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts in 15.0 innings… Kindel tallied three multi-hit games, including a 3-for-5 effort with a RBI on Wednesday and two two-hit contests… He also went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI on Friday against Albany… The outfielder is hitting .295 (26-for-88) with seven doubles, a triple, three home runs and 24 RBI in 26 games… Klein played in four games last week, including a 1-for-2 contest against Albany on Friday… In 16 games, the catcher is hitting .163 (8-for-49) with four doubles and six RBI.
Texas Collegiate League
Ryan Moore, a junior for the upcoming season, played in three games last week for the East Texas Pump Jacks of the Texas Collegiate League… He was 1-for-1 with a walk and two stolen bases Thursday against Brazos Valley before a 1-for-4 contest on Friday against Alexandria… Moore is hitting .242 (8-for-33) with one RBI, five walks, six stolen bases and 11 runs scored in 17 games this summer… The Pump Jacks, who won the first-half league title, is atop the league standings during the second half with a 12-2 mark.
Topeka Golden Giants
Sophomores for 2012 – Shane Conlon, Gerardo Esquivel, Johnny Fasola and Blair DeBord – are playing for the Topeka Golden Giants… Conlon helped the Giants defeat the Ban Johnson Raiders on Monday as he went 3-for-5 with two doubles… On Wednesday in Topeka’s regular season finale against Regal Plastics, Fasola pitched one scoreless inning as the Golden Giants moved to 30-4… Topeka began play at the National Baseball Congress (NBC) Central USA Regional Tournament in Clarinda, Iowa, on Sunday, defeating the Omaha Diamond Spirit… The Golden Giants will play the Clarinda A’s on Monday.
Walter Johnson Baseball League
Blake Freeman, Mitch Meyer and Adam Sonabend, three more sophomores for the 2012 campaign, are playing for the Salina Blue Jays of the Walter Johnson Baseball League… After losing in the second round of the National Baseball Congress (NBC) Midwest Regional, the Blue Jays won three-straight games in the loser’s bracket before being eliminated with a loss on Wednesday… On Monday against the Kansas Cannons, Meyer went 2-for-3 with a double before a 1-for-4 outing on Tuesday… In five games at the Midwest Regional, Meyer hit .400 (6-for-15) with a double, two triples and one RBI… Sonabend ended his run at the regional with two multi-hit games, recording three hits with a double on Tuesday and two more base hits with a RBI on Wednesday… The catcher played in four games, going 7-for-14 with a double and two RBI… Freeman earned the save on Tuesday, throwing 0.2 innings.
West Coast League
Matt Giller and Jake Doller are playing for the Cowlitz Black Bears of the West Coast League… Doller pitched on Saturday against Corvallis, allowing one hit and striking out one in one inning… In eight appearances, Doller is 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA, nine walks and eight strikeouts in 11.2 innings… Giller has not played in the past three weeks… He holds a .122 (5-for-41) average with two RBI in 12 games… Cowlitz is third in the west division with a 21-21 record, 5.5 games back of first-place Corvallis.
James Allen (Rookie: Billings/Cincinnati): Allen pitched in two games last week for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League… A seventh round pick by Cincinnati, Allen earned the save after he tossed two innings on Monday against Ogden, allowing an unearned run on one hit and three strikeouts… He then surrendered a run on three hits with two strikeouts in one inning of work Saturday at Orem… In 11 appearances this season, Allen is 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA and three saves… In 16.1 innings pitched, the right-hander has allowed four earned runs on 16 hits with three walks and 20 strikeouts… Allen’s three saves are tied for second in the Pioneer League… The Mustangs are second in the north division with a 17-16 mark, four games behind first-place Missoula.
Drew Biery (Double A: Richmond/San Francisco): Biery remains on the 7-Day Disabled List for the Double A Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Eastern League after being placed on the DL on June 11… A 2009 draft pick by San Francisco, the third baseman was 7-for-32 (.219) with a double and four RBI in 10 games in Double A before going on the DL… Prior to his time in Double A, Biery played in 19 games for Low A Augusta of the South Atlantic League, hitting .280 with three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI.
Justin Bloxom (High A: Potomac/Washington): A 2009 draft pick by Washington, Bloxom played in just one game last week for the Potomac Nationals of the High A Carolina League, going 0-for-2 with a walk on Monday at Lynchburg… In 66 games this season, Bloxom is hitting .278 (67-for-241) with 17 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 40 RBI… He is tied for seventh in the league in batting average, while he is third in OPS (.832), fourth in slugging percentage (.485) and ninth in on-base percentage (.347)… Potomac is 17-12 during the second half, two games behind Frederick for the northern division lead.
Jared Goedert (Triple A: Columbus/Cleveland): Goedert, a 2006 draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, played in two games last week for Triple A Columbus of the International League… He went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored Tuesday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, before a 1-for-4 effort against the Yankees on Wednesday… The next day, Goedert, who was on the 40-man roster for the Cleveland Indians, was designated for assignment… In 41 games for the Clippers, Goedert was hitting .199 (30-for-151) with eight doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI… After recovering from an injury, Goedert played in eight games for Double A Akron of the Eastern League, hitting .276 (8-for-29) with two doubles, three homers and nine RBI.
Ben Hornbeck (Double A: Midland/Oakland): Hornbeck, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, was placed on the disabled list on June 30 by Double A Midland of the Texas League… The left-hander has seen time at three different levels this year, pitching for both High A Stockton and Triple A Sacramento before joining the RockHounds… He holds a combined 1-0 record and a 3.22 ERA with seven walks and 30 strikeouts this season at all three levels… Midland is tied for third in the south division with a 13-16 second-half record.
Kyle Hunter (Rookie: Pulaski/Seattle): Hunter, a 31st-round draft pick by Seattle this season, pitched once in relief last week for the Pulaski Mariners of the Rookie Appalachian League… The left-hander surrendered just one hit and a walk with four strikeouts in three innings of work Thursday against Bluefield… Hunter holds a 1-2 record and a 1.37 ERA in eight appearances this season… He has allowed three earned runs on 20 hits with three walks and 27 strikeouts in 19.2 innings… His 27 strikeouts are fourth among relievers in the Appalachian League… The Mariners are tied for third in the east division with a 16-17 record, two games back of Bluefield and three games behind Princeton.
Trevor Hurley (High A: Myrtle Beach/Texas): Hurley, a 2008 draft pick by Texas, did not allow an earned run in two outings last week for High A Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League… The right-hander worked around three hits and struck out four batters in two innings of work on Tuesday against Wilmington… He then threw a no-hit inning with a walk and two fanned batters on Sunday at Frederick… Hurley is 1-3 with a 2.72 ERA and four saves in 27 outings this season… He has allowed 17 walks and struck out 49 batters in 36.1 innings… The Pelicans, who took home the southern division first-half title, are second in the southern division with an even 15-15 mark, four games behind Kinston.
Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): Jurica, a third-round draft pick by San Francisco in 2010, was placed on the disabled list on June 12 and remains on the DL… The shortstop was hitting .239 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI for High A San Jose before going to the DL… San Jose, which won the first-half division championship, is second in the north division during the second half with a 16-14 record.
Jason King (Class A Short-Season: Connecticut/Detroit): King totaled six hits and nine RBI in eight games last week for the Connecticut Tigers of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… A fourth-round selection by Detroit in the 2011 draft, King had two multi-hit games, including a 2-for-7 effort that featured his first professional grand slam, Wednesday at Tri-City… He also recorded two this and drove in another two runs in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday against the Valley Cats… The third baseman is hitting .265 (35-for-132) with six doubles, three triples, five home runs and 23 RBI in 35 games this season… He is tied for fourth in the league in home runs, tied for sixth in RBI, tied for seventh in triples and tied for eighth in total bases (62)… The Tigers are third in the Stedler Division with a 16-19 record, one game behind Lowell for second and two games back of first-place Vermont.
Evan Marshall (High A Visalia/Arizona): Marshall pitched in one game last week for the Yakima Bears of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… On Monday, Marshall surrendered three unearned runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout against Tri-City… That proved to be the final game the right-hander would pitch for the Bears as he was promoted to the Visalia Rawhide of the High A California League on Wednesday… He finished his time in Yakima with two saves and a 0.75 ERA… Marshall pitched twice for the Rawhide last week… He tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and a walk with two strikeouts on Thursday against Rancho Cucamonga… On Sunday at San Jose, the right-hander surrendered two unearned runs on one hit with two walks and a strikeout in one inning… Visalia is fifth in the north division with a 12-18 record.
Nick Martini (Class A Short-Season Batavia/St. Louis): A seventh-round selection by St. Louis in this year’s draft, Martini carded a trio of hits in five games last week for the Batavia Muckdogs of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… The outfielder held a three-game hitting streak with a triple on Tuesday, a RBI single Wednesday and a double on Thursday… In 32 games this season, Martini is hitting .148 (16-for-108) with two doubles, two triples, 10 RBI, 22 walks and 12 runs scored… His 22 walks are tied for seventh in the league… Batavia is tied for third in the Pinckney Division, one game away from a three-way tie for first place.
A.J. Morris (AZL Cubs/Chicago NL): Morris, a fourth-round draft choice of Washington in 2009, was traded to the Chicago Cubs during the offseason and has not pitched this year as he is rehabbing from offseason surgery.
Adam Muenster (Rookie Billings/Cincinnati): Muenster carded a double and a single in two games last week for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League… A 2010 draft pick by Cincinnati, Muenster doubled and scored Monday against Ogden, while he also scored a run Saturday at Orem… In 15 games, Muenster is hitting .200 (11-for-55) with four doubles, a triple, one home run and five RBI… The Mustangs are second in the north division with a 17-16 mark, four games behind first-place Missoula.
Nate Tenbrink (Double A Jackson/Seattle): Tenbrink, a seventh-round draft pick by Seattle in 2008, was placed on the disabled list for Double A Jackson on June 30 and remains on the DL… The third baseman was hitting .218 (46-for-211) with nine doubles, six triples, six home runs and 25 RBI in 64 games for Jackson before going on the DL… The Generals, who finished the first half in second place in the north division, are 12-18 in the second half.
Carlos Torres (Nippon Japanese League/Yomiuri Giants): Torres, a former starting pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, is playing for the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Japanese League after signing with the Giants during the offseason… The right-hander has seen time in three games for Yomiuri, holding a 0-1 record and an 8.16 ERA… Torres has spent most of his time pitching for the Giants Farm Team, going 7-2 and accumulating a 1.75 ERA in 11 games, allowing 13 earned runs on 51 hits with 10 walks and 61 strikeouts in 67.0 innings.
