Alaska Baseball League
Juniors-to-be Matt Applegate and James Allen combined for three outings last week for the Mat-Su Miners... Allen took a tough loss against the Alaska Goldpanners on Thursday when he allowed an unearned run on one hit and a walk... He also allowed one run on one hit with a walk against the AIA Fire on Friday... Applegate started and took the loss against the Fire on Saturday after allowing nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings... In six starts this summer, Applegate is 3-2 and a 3.32 ERA with seven walks and 18 strikeouts in 38.0 innings... Allen is 1-3 with a 2.89 ERA and three saves in 18.2 innings of work... The Miners are 25-12 overall this summer, including a 23-11 mark in ABL play to sit second in the league.
California Collegiate League
Junior-to-be Mike Kindel was 6-for-24 (.250) with a double, two RBI and three steals in seven games last week for the San Luis Obispo Blues... A 2010 California Collegiate League All-Star, Kindel's best game of the week came on Wednesday against the MLB Academy Barons when he went 3-for-5 with a pair of steals... He backed that up with a 1-for-3 showing and two RBI on Thursday... In 34 games this summer Kindel is hitting .283 (34-for-120) with seven doubles, two triples, 15 RBI and 14 steals... Justin Lindsey, who is pitching this summer for the Blues, was solid in his second-straight start as he took the win on Friday against the Santa Barbara Foresters... The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings to take the win... In six starts this summer, Lindsey is 3-1 with a 3.91 ERA in 25.1 innings pitched, while walking seven and striking out 23... The Blues are 27-15 overall and 21-11 in the CCL.
Cape Cod League
Junior-to-be Nick Martini went 1-for-11 in three games last week for the Falmouth Commodores... He made his only hit of the week count on Saturday at Orleans when he hammered a three-run homer, his first of the summer... In 28 games, Martini is hitting .196 (19-for-97) with three doubles, a triple, one home run and 14 RBI... Falmouth is fourth in the western division with a 13-19 record.
Central Plains Baseball League
Four K-State freshmen during the 2010 season - Jake Doller (pitcher), Chase Graskewicz (catcher), Ryan Moore (outfielder) and Tyler Sturges (pitcher) - as well as a trio of signees - Johnny Fasola (pitcher/infielder), Shawn Lewick (pitcher) and Jared King (infielder) - played for the Junction City Generals this summer... The Generals have concluded play, but final statistics were not available... Through games on July 15, King was second on the team with a .359 average (23-for-64) to go along with six doubles, two homers, 12 RBI and four steals... Fasola was hitting .294 (10-for-34) a double, a homer and seven RBI... Moore, who had 17 of the team's 40 steals, was hitting .293 (17-for-58) with three doubles, one triple and 10 RBI... Graskewicz was hitting .214 (6-for-28) with seven RBI in limited action... Pitching statistics for the Generals were not available on July 15.
Coastal Plain League
Junior-to-be Kyle Hunter led the Petersburg Generals to their lone win of the week on Friday against Edenton... The left-hander tossed six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts... In five starts, Hunter is 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in 27.0 innings, while walking 12 and striking out 28... Senior-to-be Kent Urban went 5-for-15 with two doubles and four RBI in five games for the Generals... He was 2-for-2 with a double and a RBI against Edenton on Thursday before a 2-for-3 showing with a double and two RBI against Asheboro on Friday... Urban is hitting .210 (17-for-81) with six doubles, a homer and 20 RBI in 22 games this summer... Petersburg is 12-37, including a 5-16 second-half mark to sit fifth in the north division.
Jayhawk Baseball League
Junior-to-be Matt Giller and sophomore-to-be Blair DeBord are playing for the El Dorado Broncos, who spent last week competing in the National Baseball Congress (NBC) Midwest Regional at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita... El Dorado, the No. 1 seed for the event, was knocked out after four games of the double-elimination event... Giller was 4-for-16 in the regional, including a two-hit game against Lindsborg last Saturday... DeBord went 3-for-6 in two games, including a 3-for-5 outing with two RBI against Park City on Monday... Giller is hitting .255 (24-for-94) this summer with four doubles, four RBI and 22 RBI... DeBord is at .128 (10-for-78) with a double, a homer and 11 RBI... Sophomore-to-be Nick Cocking is playing for the Liberal Bee Jays... Through games on Thursday, Cocking was hitting .224 (13-for-58) with two doubles, a triple, two home runs and eight RBI... He has also walked 15 times and stolen a pair of bases.
Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association
Junior-to-be Kayvon Bahramzadeh took a tough loss against the Orange County Pioneers on Wednesday when he allowed just one run on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a 1-0 loss... He bounced back on Saturday to throw a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts in the All-Star Game against Team San Diego... In five games, including four starts, Bahramzadeh went 1-1 with 1.17 ERA in 23.0 innings with six walks and 18 strikeouts... Another junior-to-be, Jake Brown, saw time in three games last week, including a 1-for-3 effort against the LA Rhinos on Friday with a double, two hit-by-pitches, two runs scored and two RBI... In 15 games, Brown hit .130 (3-for-23) with a double and three RBI... The Power concluded their season with a 34-4 record, including a 20-3 mark in league play.
Topeka Golden Giants (Independent)
Sophomores-to-be Tanner Witt and Robert Hawkins are joined by another current Wildcat, Brandon Faulkner, and an incoming pitcher, Cody Faulkner, on the Topeka Golden Giants roster... The Golden Giants are competing in the NBC Mid-Kansas Regional in Hutchinson, Kan., but updated results and statistics for the regional were not available... Through games on July 7, Brandon Faulkner was 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA, allowing 11 earned runs in 36.2 innings, while walking 14 and striking out 39... Cody Faulkner was 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 16.0 innings, while Hawkins was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA... Witt was hitting .222 (12-for-54) with two doubles, 11 RBI and seven steals, while holding a .593 on-base percentage.
Tri-State Collegiate League
Sophomore-to-be Brad Clement is playing for Northern Ohio Baseball... Updated statistics for Northern Ohio were not available... Through games played July 3, Clement was hitting .238 (5-for-21) with two doubles, a home run and nine RBI.
Drew Biery: A 2009 draft choice by San Francisco, Biery recorded a four-home run week in seven games for the High A San Jose Giants... The third baseman, who went 6-for-28 (.214), also added a double and drove in seven runs... On Monday at Lancaster, he went 2-for-5 with a double and a solo home run before hitting a pair of homers and tallying four RBI against Stockton on Wednesday... He followed that up with a solo shot on Thursday and a RBI single on Sunday... In 80 games this season, Biery is hitting .267 with seven doubles, a triple, 12 home runs and 47 RBI... The Giants, who won the first half of the California League North Division, is 57-44 overall, but just 12-19 in the second-half standings.
Justin Bloxom: Bloxom, an 11th-round selection by the Washington Nationals last year, registered at least one hit in six of his seven games last week, including a pair of multi-hit contests for the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League... The first baseman went 8-for-32 (.250) with three doubles and four RBI... His two-hit games came against Rome on Tuesday and at Ashville on Thursday... He also recorded a double in three-straight games against the Tourists Tuesday through Thursday, and a RBI in each game, including two on Thursday... In 95 games this season, Bloxom is hitting .313 with 28 doubles, four triples, 10 homers and 66 RBI to go along with 10 stolen bases... He ranks second in the league in hits (120) and total bases (186), tied for third in doubles, fourth in average and RBI, and sixth in runs scored (64), slugging percentage (.486) and OPS (.845)... The Suns, who are 46-53 overall this season, are 10-19 in the second half to sit seventh in the northern division second-half standings.
Adam Cowart: Cowart, a second-year pitcher for the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, took two no decisions last week in a pair of two-run losses for Wichita... On Monday at Sioux Falls, the right-hander allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings... He followed that up on Saturday with a 5.0-inning outing, allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts against St. Paul... In 14 starts for Wichita, Cowart is 3-6 with a 4.57 ERA, but has allowed just 24 walks in 80.2 innings (2.67 walks-per-nine innings)... Wichita is 32-36 this season and 12-8 in the second-half standings to sit third in the north division.
Eric Eymann: A 2005 selection by the Cincinnati Reds, Eymann was placed on the 7-Day Disabled List on July 17... In 81 games this season for Double A Carolina, Eymann is hitting .257 with 18 doubles, a triple, five homers and 34 RBI... The Mudcats are second in the Southern League North Division second-half standings at 16-14, while Carolina is 46-53 overall.
Jared Goedert: A 2006 draft pick by Cleveland, Goedert went 7-for-23 (.304) in six games last week for Triple A Columbus... The third baseman, who was promoted from Double A in early June, did not hit a home run last week after hitting 16 in his first 37 games for the Clippers... However, Goedert did turn in four doubles in his first four games of the week at Durham... He also had two-hit games against the Bulls on Monday and Wednesday, while also driving in a pair of runs on Wednesday... In 43 games for the Clippers, Goedert is hitting .305 (53-for-174) with 15 doubles, 16 home runs and 35 RBI... His slugging percentage (.667) would lead the International League, while his OPS (1.041) would rank second and his average would rank fifth if he met the required minimum of at-bats... Goedert is tied for seventh in home runs despite limited action... Columbus sits atop the west division at 63-40, 10 games ahead of second-place Louisville.
Ben Hornbeck: Hornbeck, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, went 1-1 in two starts last week for High A Stockton... The left-hander took the win on Monday against Rancho Cucamonga as he surrendered three earned runs on seven hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings... He then dropped a decision on Sunday at Visalia when he allowed 11 runs (five earned) on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts in just three innings... In 13 starts in High A, Hornbeck, who began the season at Double A Midland, is 3-3 with a 5.26 ERA in 65.0 innings, while allowing just 28 walks as opposed to 77 strikeouts... In his last five starts, Hornbeck has struck out 31 batters (6.2 per game)... Stockton is 48-53 overall but 17-14 in the second half to sit second in the California League North Division standings.
Trevor Hurley: Hurley, a 2008 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, worked three innings over two appearances last week for High A Bakersfield of the California League... He tossed one inning at Lake Elsinore on Friday, allowing just one hit and one walk... He came back to throw two innings against the Storm on Sunday, surrendering a run on one hit with four walks and two strikeouts... In four appearances for the Blaze, Hurley is 0-1 with a 1.96 ERA, allowing two earned runs on five hits with seven walks and 11 strikeouts in 9.2 innings... A 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star and one of the top closers in the league, Hurley was 0-1 with a 1.43 ERA and 11 saves in 26 appearances at Low A Hickory before being promoted... Bakersfield, which finished fifth in the north division standings in the first half, leads the division during the second half with a 19-12 record.
Carter Jurica: Jurica, a third-round selection this year by San Francisco, recorded the best week of his young career for Salem-Keizer of the Class A Short Season Northwest League... The shortstop went 6-for-21 (.286) with two doubles, two triples and six RBI... He recorded a RBI double at Vancouver on Tuesday before exploding against Everett on Wednesday... Against the Aqua Sox, Jurica went 4-for-5 with a pair of triples and four RBI... He came back to record a double on Thursday and drove in a run on Friday... Jurica is hitting .197 (23-for-117) in 31 games this season with a three doubles, three triples, a home run, 13 RBI and 13 runs scored... The Volcanoes finished the first half second in the west division at 17-20.
A.J. Morris: A fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals in 2009, Morris saw action in two games last week, including his first professional relief appearance... He worked three innings of relief on Wednesday against Salem, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts... That didn't affect his next start as he tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win at Winston-Salem on Sunday... Against the Dash, the right-hander allowed just two hits with no walks and five strikeouts... In 13 games this season, including 12 starts, Morris is 3-2 with a 3.30 ERA... He has allowed 22 walks and struck out 53 in 60.0 innings... His ERA would rank seventh in the Carolina League if he had pitched the required minimum of innings... The P-Nats hold a 47-51 overall record, while they are second in the northern division during the second half with a 16-12 mark.
Adam Muenster: Muenster, a 29th-round draft choice by Cincinnati, saw action in three games last week for the Arizona League (AZL) Reds... He was a pinch runner and scored a run against the AZL Indians on Monday, while he went 0-for-2 with a RBI on Wednesday against the AZL Dodgers and was hitless in three at-bats against the AZL Athletics on Saturday... Muenster is 13-for-67 (.194) in 21 games this season with two doubles, six RBI and nine walks... The AZL Reds are fourth in the central division at 12-16.
Justin Murray: After a pair of relief appearances the week prior, Murray, a 2008 draft selection by Oakland, started two games last week for High A Stockton of the California League... On Tuesday at San Jose, the right-hander allowed four runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings as he took a no decision... He rebounded on Sunday at Visalia with a win after allowing just one run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work... Murray, who has spent time in both High A and Double A this season, is 7-4 with a 4.18 ERA in 17 games between the two levels... He has worked 97.0 innings this season, while walking 52 and striking out 71... Stockton is 48-53 overall but 17-14 in the second half to sit second in the north division standings.
Nate Tenbrink: A 2008 selection by Seattle, Tenbrink recorded five hits in 18 at-bats during five games last week for Double A West Tenn of the Southern League... The infielder/outfielder was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI on Monday at Huntsville before recording two hits, including a double, on Sunday against Birmingham... In 34 games in Double A, Tenbrink is hitting .262 (28-for-107) with four doubles, two triples, four homers and 18 RBI since being promoted to the club on May 26... West Tenn is 52-47 overall and 13-17 in the second half to sit fifth in the north division standings.
Carlos Torres: A 2004 selection by the Chicago White Sox and the latest former Wildcat in the MLB, Torres took a couple of tough losses last week for Triple A Charlotte... On Monday against Louisville, the right-hander allowed just three runs on eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings, but the Knights lost, 11-2, after the bullpen allowed eight ninth-inning runs... Torres then surrendered four runs on six hits with seven walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings at Indianapolis on Saturday... Torres, a 2010 Triple A All-Star, is 7-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 124.1 innings pitched with 56 walks and 116 strikeouts this season... The right-hander leads the International League in innings pitched, is second in strikeouts and 11th in ERA... Charlotte sits second in the south division at 52-51.
Rob Vaughn: Vaughn, a 30th-round pick in the 2009 draft by the Chicago White Sox, saw time in two games last week for the Great Falls Voyagers of the Rookie Pioneer League... He was a late-inning substitution on Wednesday, going 0-for-1 against Casper... He also played against Idaho Falls on Sunday, going 1-for-2 with a two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly to lead the Voyagers to an 8-7 victory... In 11 games this season, Vaughn is 8-for-29 (.276) with five RBI... Great Falls leads the north division with a 20-14 record.
Byron Wiley: A free agent signee by Arizona this season, Wiley is a member of the Visalia Rawhide of the California League... The outfielder has not played since June 14 and remains on the 7-Day Disabled List... In nine games this season for Visalia, Wiley is hitting .286 (10-for-35) with a homer and seven RBI... The Rawhide are 48-46 overall and 11-13 in the second half to sit fourth in the north division.
