Kansas State Summer Baseball Update: August 1

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

Alaska Baseball League
Matt Applegate, a senior for the upcoming season, did not pitch last week in the final week of play for the Mat-Su Miners of the Alaska Baseball League… In five games this summer, including two starts, the right-hander went 3-1 with a 3.14 ERA, allowing five runs on nine hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in 14.1 innings of work… Mat-Su finished the season with an overall record of 23-17-1, including a 21-15 mark in ABL play.

California Collegiate League
A junior for 2012, Tanner Witt ended his summer with the San Luis Obispo Blues of the California Collegiate League on an eight-game hitting streak, and he collected at least one hit in all six games last week… The shortstop’s best game came against Glendale on Wednesday as he went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI… He also went 1-for-2, drove in a run and stole three bases on Thursday against Orange County… Witt finished the summer by hitting .262 (33-for-126) with four doubles and 20 RBI in 36 games, while he was a perfect 15-for-15 in stolen base attempts… Wade Hinkle was also a member of the Blues, but did not play last week… Hinkle hit .211 (15-for-71) with four doubles and 10 RBI in 21 games… The Blues finished with a 34-15 record, including a 24-12 mark in the California Collegiate League.

Cape Cod Baseball League
Jared King, a member of the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League and a sophomore for the upcoming season, had two hits in five games last week… The outfielder hit a solo home run on Monday at Orleans and also recorded a hit Saturday against Cotuit… King is hitting .168 (16-for-95) with a double, a home run, 14 walks and eight RBI in 32 games this summer… The Commodores are 17-24, which is fourth in the western division.
 
Jayhawk Baseball League
Sophomores for the 2012 season, Jared Moore and Ross Kivett played for the Liberal Bee Jays of the Jayhawk League this summer, and helped the Bee Jays earn a spot in the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series… Kivett finished play in the Jayhawk League with a .317 average, three doubles, one triple, one homer and 13 RBI… Moore was 0-3, but held a 2.21 ERA with 27 strikeouts… Liberal defeated the Tulsa Titans 15-0 in its first game of the NBC World Series on Saturday… Kivett went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI during the five-inning run-rule game… Mitch Meyer, who played for the Salina Blue Jays during the regular season, has joined Liberal for the World Series… The Bee Jays’ next game is on Tuesday against Colorado’s PlayBall Sports.

Perfect Game Collegiate League
Mike Kindel, Dan Klein and Kayvon Bahramzadeh, seniors for the 2012 campaign, helped the Glens Falls Golden Eagles of the Perfect Game Collegiate League win all six games last week… Bahramzadeh earned the win on Tuesday against Elmira, allowing a run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings of work… He came back with another victory on Sunday against Amsterdam, allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and another six strikeouts in five innings… In six games, including four starts, Bahramzadeh is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA, allowing five runs on 25 hits with six walks and 23 strikeouts in 25.0 innings… Kindel had five hits in six games last week, including a two-hit contest on Tuesday against Elmira… He also had a double and a RBI on Wednesday against Cooperstown, and he drove in two runs on Saturday against Mohawk Valley… In 32 games, Kindel is hitting .282 (31-for-110) with eight doubles, one triple, three home runs and 27 RBI… Klein tallied two hits, including doubles on Wednesday and Sunday, while he drew four walks against Mohawk Valley on Saturday… The catcher is hitting .167 (10-for-60) with six doubles and nine RBI in 21 games… The Golden Eagles have clinched a playoff spot with a 29-15 record, which is first in the east division.

Texas Collegiate League
A junior for the upcoming season, Ryan Moore registered two hits in three games last week for the East Texas Pump Jacks of the Texas Collegiate League… The outfielder went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored on Tuesday at Coppell, and he was also 1-for-3 against the Copperheads on Friday… In 20 games this summer, Moore is hitting .244 (10-for-41) with one RBI, eight walks, eight stolen bases and 13 runs scored… East Texas, which won the first-half league title, leads the TCL during the second half with a 15-5 record.

Topeka Golden Giants
Shane Conlon, Gerardo Esquivel, Johnny Fasola and Blair DeBord – all sophomores for the upcoming season – helped the Topeka Golden Giants earn a berth in the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series by winning the Central USA Regional in Clarinda, Iowa, last week… Conlon went 10-for-23 with eight RBI in the regional… Esquivel picked up victories in the opening and championship games, going 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA in 13.0 innings… The right-hander surrendered just seven hits and walked six while recording 18 strikeouts… The Golden Giants, who are 35-5 this summer, will face the Pueblo (Colo.) Collegians in the first round of the NBC World Series on Monday.

Walter Johnson Baseball League
Mitch Meyer and Adam Sonabend, members of the Salina Blue Jays, were named to the 2011 National Baseball Congress (NBC) Midwest Regional All-Tournament team… Sonabend ended his run at the regional with two multi-hit games, going 7-for-14 with a double and two RBI… Meyer, who is now a member of the Liberal Bee Jays for the NBC World Series, went 6-for-15 with a double, two triples and one RBI in the Midwest Regional… Blake Freeman also threw for the Blue Jays, going 0-1 with save after allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits with three walks.

West Coast League
Matt Giller and Jake Doller are playing for the Cowlitz Black Bears of the West Coast League… Doller threw on Sunday at Kitsap, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and allowing three hits and a walk with three strikeouts… In nine appearances, Doller is 1-1 with a 6.28 ERA, 10 walks and 11 strikeouts in 14.1 innings… Giller has not played in the past month weeks… He holds a .122 (5-for-41) average with two RBI in 12 games… The Black Bears are third in the west division with a 25-22 record.

K-State Pros
James Allen (Rookie: Billings/Cincinnati): A seventh-round pick in this year’s draft by Cincinnati, Allen pitched twice last week for for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League… The right-hander earned the save on Tuesday, allowing one hit and striking out four in 1.2 innings at Ogden… He came back with another scoreless frame against Helena on Saturday… Allen is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA and four saves in 13 outings this season… In 19.0 innings pitched, Allen has allowed four earned runs on 17 hits with three walks and 24 strikeouts… He is tied for fourth in the Pioneer League in saves… Billings finished the first half in second place in the north division with a 20-18 record and is 0-1 to begin the second half.

Drew Biery (Double A: Richmond/San Francisco): A draft pick of San Francisco in 2009, Biery remains on the 7-Day Disabled List for the Double A Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Eastern League after being placed on the list on June 11… The third baseman was 7-for-32 (.219) with a double and four RBI in 10 games in Double A before going on the DL… Prior to his time in Double A, Biery played in 19 games for Low A Augusta of the South Atlantic League, hitting .280 with three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI.

Justin Bloxom (High A: Potomac/Washington): Bloxom, a 2009 draft pick by Washington, tallied three multi-hit contests in six games last week for the Potomac Nationals of the High A Carolina League… He was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI on Wednesday… He ended his week with two-hit games on Saturday and Sunday against Frederick, with a double against the Keys on Saturday… Bloxom is hitting .280 (74-for-264) with 19 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 42 RBI in 72 games… The third baseman is tied for eighth in the league in batting average, while he is fifth in OPS (.825) and slugging percentage (.477), and ninth in on-base percentage (.348)… Potomac is in second place during the second half with a 21-15 record, three games behind Frederick for the northern division lead.

Jared Goedert (Triple A: Columbus/Cleveland): A 2006 draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, Goedert cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and played in four games last week for Triple A Columbus of the International League… Since returning to the Columbus lineup, Goedert has had one hit in all four games, including home runs on both Saturday and Sunday against Norfolk… The third baseman is hitting .209 (34-for-163) with eight doubles, six home runs and 16 RBI in 45 games for the Clippers… After recovering from an injury, Goedert played in eight games for Double A Akron of the Eastern League, hitting .276 (8-for-29) with two doubles, three homers and nine RBI… Columbus still leads the International League West Division with a 67-42 record, 9.5 games ahead of second-place Louisville.

Ben Hornbeck (Double A: Midland/Oakland): Placed on the disabled list on June 30 by Double A Midland, Hornbeck, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, remains on the DL… The left-hander has seen time at three different levels this year, pitching for both High A Stockton and Triple A Sacramento before joining the RockHounds… He holds a combined 1-0 record and a 3.22 ERA with seven walks and 30 strikeouts this season at all three levels… The RockHounds are tied for third in the south division with a 17-19 record.

Kyle Hunter (Rookie: Pulaski/Seattle): A 31st-round draft pick by Seattle in the 2011 draft, Hunter threw twice last week for the Pulaski Mariners of the Rookie Appalachian League… The left-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts on Tuesday at Danville, while he started and threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts on Saturday against Burlington… Hunter holds a 1-2 record and a 1.61 ERA in 10 appearances, allowing four earned runs on 23 hits with three walks and 31 strikeouts in 22.1 innings… Pulaski is fourth in the Appalachian League East Division with a 19-21 record.

Trevor Hurley (High A: Myrtle Beach/Texas): A 2008 draft pick by Texas, Hurley tossed 2.2 no-hit innings of relief in one game last week for High A Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League… On Saturday against Winston-Salem, the right-hander allowed an earned run with two walks and a strikeout… In 28 games this season, Hurley is 1-3 with a 2.77 ERA and four saves… He has allowed 19 walks and struck out 50 batters in 39.0 innings… The southern division first-half champion Pelicans are in third place during the second half with an even 18-18 record.

Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): A third-round draft pick by San Francisco last year, Jurica was put on the disabled list on June 12 and remains on the DL… The shortstop was hitting .239 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI for High A San Jose before going to the DL… The Giants, who took home the first-half division crown, are tied for second during the second half at 20-16.

Jason King (Class A Short-Season: Connecticut/Detroit): A fourth-round selection by Detroit this year, King collected five hits, including another home run, in six games last week for the Connecticut Tigers of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… The third baseman tallied a hit and a RBI Wednesday at Brooklyn… He then ended his week with two hits, including his sixth home run of the season, on Sunday against Batavia… In 41 games this season, King is hitting .255 (40-for-157) with six doubles, three triples, six home runs and 25 RBI… The third baseman is tied for fifth in the league in home runs, eighth in triples and total bases (70), and tied for ninth in RBI… Connecticut is 19-22 this season to sit in second place in the Stedler Division, 2.5 games behind Vermont.

Evan Marshall (High A Visalia/Arizona): A fourth-round selection by Arizona in this year’s draft, Marshall pitched twice last week for High A Visalia of the California League… The right-hander, who was promoted from Class A Short-Season Yakima two weeks ago, struggled against Stockton on Wednesday as he allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout… Marshall was able to bounce back on Sunday as he tossed a perfect inning with one strikeout against Rancho Cucamonga… In 15 games between Visalia and Yakima, Marshall holds a 1.56 ERA and two saves, allowing three earned runs on 14 hits with six walks and 19 strikeouts in 17.1 innings… The Rawhide is 15-21 during the second half, which is fifth in the north division.

Nick Martini (Class A Short-Season Batavia/St. Louis): Martini, a seventh-round selection by St. Louis this season, went 3-for-10 in three games last week for the Batavia Muckdogs of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… The outfielder was 1-for-4 on Wednesday against Staten Island before a 2-for-3 effort with three RBI against the Yankees on Friday… In 35 games this season, Martini is hitting .161 (19-for-118) with two doubles, two triples and 13 RBI… The Muckdogs are fifth in the Pinckney Division, three games away from a three-way tie for second and four games out of first place.

A.J. Morris (AZL Cubs/Chicago NL): A fourth-round draft choice of Washington in 2009, Morris was traded to the Chicago Cubs during the offseason and has not pitched this year as he is rehabbing from offseason surgery.

Adam Muenster (Rookie Billings/Cincinnati): Muenster, a 2010 draft selection by Cincinnati, homered in his only game last week for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League… The second baseman hit a solo shot and walked once at Ogden on Wednesday… Muenster is hitting .200 (12-for-60) with four doubles, a triple, two home runs and six RBI in 16 games… Billings finished the first half of the season in second place in the north division and is 0-1 to begin the second half.

Nate Tenbrink (Double A Jackson/Seattle): A seventh-round draft pick by Seattle in 2008, Tenbrink was put on the disabled list for Double A Jackson on June 30 and remains on the DL… The third baseman was hitting .218 (46-for-211) with nine doubles, six triples, six home runs and 25 RBI in 64 games for Jackson before going on the DL… Jackson, which finished the first half in second place in the north division, is 15-21 during the second half.

Carlos Torres (Nippon Japanese League/Yomiuri Giants): A former starting pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, Torres is playing for the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Japanese League after signing with the Giants during the offseason… The right-hander has seen time in four games for Yomiuri, holding a 1-1 record and a 6.98 ERA… He has spent most of his time pitching for the Giants Farm Team, going 7-2 and accumulating a 1.75 ERA in 11 games, allowing 13 earned runs on 51 hits with 10 walks and 61 strikeouts in 67.0 innings.
