K-State Summer Baseball Update: August 3

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

 

Alaska Baseball League

The Alaska Glacier Pilots, which fields senior-to-be Daniel Dellasega, will play their final game of the summer on Monday… Dellasega went just 1-for-11 (.091) with one RBI last week… In 34 games this summer, Dellasega is hitting .206 (22-for-107) with three doubles and 11 RBI for the Glacier Pilots, who are 27-24 overall and 24-20 in league play, good for third in the ABL… Another senior-to-be, Mark Joukoff, made two appearances, including one start, last week for the Anchorage Bucs… Joukoff took a 2-0 loss to the Glacier Pilots on Wednesday and followed that by throwing two innings of relief on Sunday against the Kenai Oilers, allowing one earned run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts… In 13 appearances this season, including seven starts, Joukoff is 5-4 with a 3.66 ERA, having allowed 19 earned runs on 44 hits in 46.2 innings with 12 walks and 24 strikeouts… Through play on July 26, Joukoff was tied for first in the ABL in wins… The Bucs, who will also conclude their season on Monday, are 31-20-1 overall and 26-18 in ABL play, 1.5 games behind the Mat-Su Miners for first.

Central Plains Baseball League

Mike Kindel, Nick Cocking, James Allen, Matt Applegate, Kayvon Bahramzadeh and signee Brandon Faulkner finished their season with the Junction City Generals with a 4-2 win on Friday, ending the season at 23-12… The Generals defeated the Valley Center Diamond Dogs with the help of Faulkner, Bahramzadeh and Applegate, who combined to throw the final 5.0 innings to preserve the victory… Final player stats were not available for the Generals… As of July 20, Faulkner was 5-1 with a 2.95 ERA in seven starts, having allowed 14 earned runs on 29 hits with 12 walks and 24 strikeouts in 42.2 innings… Furthermore, opponents were hitting just .175 off him… Applegate was 3-1 with a team-leading 1.95 ERA in six starts … He had surrendered nine earned runs on 39 hits with 11 walks and 26 strikeouts in 41.1 innings… Kindel was hitting .227 (15-for-66) with two doubles, one triple, one home run and seven RBI… Cocking was hitting .217 (18-for-83) with two doubles, a homer and 12 RBI… He was also a perfect 14-for-14 in stolen-base attempts… Coming off a leg injury during the 2009 season, Bahramzadeh had allowed one earned run on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

 

Coastal Plain League

Ryan Daniel, a senior-to-be, did not pitch in the past week for the Fayetteville SwampDogs after throwing eight scoreless innings on July 26 en route to earning Coastal Plain Co-Pitcher of the Week honors… Daniel is 1-2 with a 4.98 ERA in his four starts this summer… He has surrendered 12 earned runs on 27 hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts in 21.2 innings... Fayetteville, which finished one game out of first in the first half, is third in the south division in the second half with a 14-11 record… The SwampDogs will take part in the Petitt Cup Playoffs, which runs Thursday, Aug. 6 through Friday, Aug. 14.

 

Jayhawk Baseball League

Jayhawk League and National Baseball Congress (NBC) Midwest Regional Champion El Dorado Broncos field sophomores-to-be Matt Giller, Justin Lindsey and Cameron Welch… The Broncos, who clinched the NBC Midwest Regional on July 24, begin their run in the NBC World Series on Monday against the Katy (Texas) Collegians… Updated player stats for the Broncos were not available… As of July 19, Giller was hitting .391 (18-for-60) with three doubles, two homers and seven RBI… Welch was at .244 (10-for-41) with a pair of doubles, one triple, one home run and six RBI… In 32.1 innings pitched, Lindsey was 3-1 with a 3.06 ERA, having allowed 11 earned runs on 22 hits with seven walks and 34 strikeouts… The 2009 NBC World Series, which is played at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan., runs through August 15.

 

M.I.N.K. League

Jake Brown, Evan Marshall, Nick Martini and signee Jake Doller led the Topeka Golden Giants to a final record of 18-16… The Golden Giants finished their season with a 2-1 win over Clarinda on July 18… The Golden Giants will not compete in the postseason due to injuries and other roster departures… Final stats were not available for the Golden Giants… As of June 20, Brown was 0-for-15 with six walks and two hit-by-pitches… The second baseman also scored four runs and stole three bases… Marshall started against St. Joseph on June 18, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts… That came on the heels of a 7.0 scoreless-innings outing against the Nevada Griffons on June 9… The sophomore-to-be had allowed three runs on eight hits in 15.0 innings with no walks and nine strikeouts… Doller, an incoming freshman, started against Beatrice on June 11 and threw 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts, but suffered the loss… As of June 20, Martini was hitting .250 (4-for-16) in five games with five walks, a hit-by-pitch and a pair of stolen bases.

 

Prospect League

Incoming junior-college transfer David Allday and the Springfield Sliders went 2-3 last week… The infielder was 4-for-13 (.308) with a triple, a homer, two RBI, three walks and three runs scored in four games… In a 2-0 win against Dubois on Wednesday, Allday went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored before a 1-for-2 night with a home run, two RBI, two walks and two runs scored on Thursday… In 32 games this summer, Allday is hitting .250 (25-for-100) with six doubles, two triples, three homers and 13 RBI... Muenster has only played in 20 games this summer due to an undisclosed injury… The infielder/outfielder is second on the team with a .357 average (25-for-70) with a double, two triples, one home run and 10 RBI… The Sliders are fifth in the west division with a 21-28 record.

 

Sierra Baseball League

Jason King has not played for the San Luis Obispo Blues for the last two weeks… In 19 games this summer, King is hitting .338 (24-for-73) with three doubles, two triples, 13 walks and nine RBI… The Blues are 40-12 this season.

 

Texas Collegiate League

Thomas Rooke started one game for the McKinney Marshals last week… The Spring, Texas, native tossed six scoreless innings of a seven-inning contest, allowing five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in a 1-0 McKinney win over Victoria… In seven appearances this season, the left-hander is 3-0 with a 2.50 ERA, having allowed 11 earned runs on 36 hits with 20 walks and 40 strikeouts in 39.2 innings… He is tied for 10th in the TCL in wins and is 11th in strikeouts… Jurica finished his summer by playing in just 11 games due to an undisclosed injury… Jurica is second on the team in hitting at .302 (13-for-43) with a double, a homer and four RBI… McKinney, which will finish its season on Saturday, is fifth in the league at 17-25.

 

Walter Johnson League

Daniel Rumsey, Kyle Hunter and Chad Jasman played for the Salina Bluejays this summer, whose season came to an end in the Walter Johnson Baseball League Tournament on July 26… Salina defeated the Team Elite Kings on July 25, but lost to South Division Champion Valley Center in the winner’s bracket and Park City in the loser’s bracket… Rumsey, who was selected to the Walter Johnson All-League Team, finished second on the team in average at .366 (41-for-138)… The Tomball, Texas, product tallied four doubles, one triple, one home run and 23 RBI in 33 games… Hunter was 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 9.0 innings… Jasman was 2-2 with a 7.22 ERA in six games… The right-hander surrendered 23 earned runs on 35 hits with 19 walks and 17 strikeouts in 28.2 innings.

 

2009 Draft Picks

Drew Biery: After earning league hitter of the week honors the week prior, Biery, a 22nd-round draft by San Francisco, cooled down as he went 4-for-25 (.160) with one double and two RBI last week for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… On Monday against Yakima, the third baseman went 1-for-4 with a RBI, while he was 2-for-5 with a RBI double at Tri-City on Thursday… The Arlington, Texas, native is hitting .360 (49-for-136) in 35 games this season with eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 31 RBI… Despite his recent slump, Biery still leads the Northwest League in average, while he is tied for second in RBI, fourth in runs scored (31), tied for fourth in hits, sixth in on-base percentage (.425), seventh in OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage; .947), eighth in slugging percentage (.522), tied for ninth in total bases (71), tied for 16th in homers and tied for 17th in doubles… The Volcanoes continue to lead the west division with a Northwest League-best 30-12 record.

 

Justin Bloxom: Bloxom, who was drafted in the 11th round by the Washington Nationals, was 5-for-21 (.238) with one homer and two RBI in six games last week for the Vermont Lake Monsters of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… The Lake Monster designated hitter recorded a four-game hitting streak as he tallied one hit in two games on Thursday and one game on Friday before going 2-for-4 with a RBI single and a solo homer on Saturday against Lowell… Bloxom retained his .240 average (30-for-125) from a week ago… In 37 games this season, the Phoenix, Ariz., product has tallied two doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI… Bloxom has also recorded 20 walks, which is tied for 12th in the league… Vermont struggled last week, going 2-5 and dropping to third place in the Stedler Division at 21-22.

 

Jordan Cruz: An undrafted free-agent acquisition by the Detroit Tigers, Cruz is currently riding a six-game hitting streak after going 6-for-22 (.273) with two doubles, two home runs and six RBI in seven games last week for the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Tigers… On Wednesday against the GCL Braves, Cruz jumpstarted a five-run ninth inning with a two-run homer in a game the Tigers won, 12-10… He also connected on another two-run homer on Saturday at the GCL Blue Jays… Cruz is hitting .277 (33-for-119) in 34 games this summer with 13 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 22 RBI and 19 runs scored… The Hutchinson, Kan., native is second in the Gulf Coast League in doubles and total bases (62), fourth in RBI and slugging percentage (.521), tied for fourth in homers, tied for sixth in runs scored and hits, ninth in OPS (.879), tied for 14th in triples, tied for 18th in walks (12)… After an impressive 5-2 week, the GCL Tigers moved out of the cellar in the north division and are now tied for third at 17-18.

 

Lance Hoge: After taking the loss in his first start for the Savannah Sand Gnats of the Class A South Atlantic League, Hoge, a 39th-round draft pick by the New York Mets, didn’t fare any better in his second start following his promotion… The left-hander was saddled with another loss, this time at home against Bowling Green on Friday after he allowed four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings… Hoge, who was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA for the Brooklyn Cyclones of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League, earned the promotion to Low A on July 26, which was also his first start for the Sand Gnats… In two appearances for Savannah this season, Hoge is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA, having allowed six earned runs on 11 hits in 8.0 innings, but he has not surrendered a walk as opposed to six strikeouts… Savannah is fourth in the South Atlantic League Southern Division, 3.5 games out of first in the second half, with a 19-17 record.

 

A.J. Morris: Following two predetermined starts for the GCL Nationals, Morris, a fourth-round pick by the Washington Nationals, was promoted to Class A Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League and made his debut for the Suns on Thursday… However, Morris yielded three earned runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 4.0 innings, taking his first professional loss against West Virginia… In a pair of predetermined starts for the GCL Nationals, Morris tossed 5.0 hitless innings with four strikeouts… Hagerstown is seventh in the eight-team northern division with a 13-22 second-half record.

 

Rob Vaughn: Vaughn, who was drafted in the 30th round by the Chicago White Sox, was 0-for-4 in just two games for the Bristol Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League… The Humble, Texas, product played in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday against Danville, going 0-for-2 in each contest with a walk in the first game… The catcher is hitting .222 (10-for-45) in 14 games this summer with a double and a RBI… Bristol is in fourth place in the west division with a 15-22 mark.

 

Other K-State Pros

Adam Cowart: An American Association Independent League All-Star and ace of the Wichita Wingnuts pitching staff, Cowart struggled last week, going 0-2 in his two starts… Against Pensacola on Monday, the right-hander allowed five earned runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts… He was unable to bounce back on Saturday at Sioux Falls when he lasted just 6.0 innings after allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts… In 13 appearances this season, which includes 12 starts, Cowart is 5-5 with a 3.16 ERA, which is tops amongst Wichita starters… In 74.0 innings, Cowart has allowed 26 earned runs, walked 15 batters and struck out 29, while opponents are hitting .257 against him… Cowart is tied for first in the American Association with three complete games, while he is sixth in ERA… Wichita is third in the north division with a 10-13 second-half record after winning the first half division title.

 

Eric Eymann: Eymann completed his third week in Triple A Louisville last week as the second baseman went 5-for-19 (.263) with two doubles and three RBI in five games… Eymann started the week with a four-game hitting streak, going 1-for-3 with a double on Monday at Syracuse before a 2-for-5 contest with a RBI single and a RBI double against Toledo on Tuesday…He also went 1-for-4 and drove in another run against the Mud Hens on Wednesday… Eymann is hitting .204 (10-for-49) in 14 games in Triple A this season, while he has tallied with four doubles, one triple and five RBI… The Bats continue to lead the west division with a 61-47 mark, nine games above Indianapolis… Prior to his promotion to Triple A, Eymann played 69 games this season for the Carolina Mudcats of the Southern League (Double A)… A 19th-round draft pick by Cincinnati in 2005, Eymann was hitting .233 with nine doubles, one homer and 20 RBI before being reassigned to Triple A… Carolina, which finished second in the north division in the first half, is fifth in the second half at 14-23.

 

Jared Goedert: A 2006 draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, Goedert, who has been battling injuries this season, played in just one game last week for the Akron Aeros of the Eastern League (Double A), going 1-for-5 at Binghamton on Saturday… In 71 games this season Goedert is hitting .235 (57-for-243) with 15 doubles, one triple, four homers and 28 RBI… Akron, which saw its lead in the southern division cut to three games the week prior, is now seven games ahead of Reading with a 68-41 record.

 

Ben Hornbeck: A starter for a majority of the season, Hornbeck made two relief appearances last week for the Stockton Ports of the Class A Advanced California League… The left-hander tossed a total of three scoreless innings, allowing one hit with a pair of strikeouts in 1.0 inning on Wednesday against San Jose, before throwing 2.0 scoreless innings with three hits and three strikeouts on Sunday at Modesto… This season in High A, Hornbeck, who has pitched at three different levels in the A’s minor-league system, is 4-3 with a 4.31 ERA… The Phoenix, Ariz., product has allowed 27 earned runs in 56.1 innings, while he has walked 22 batters as opposed to his 79 strikeouts… Hornbeck is tied for 27th in the California League in strikeouts, while he would be 14th in ERA and tied for 17th in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched) if he had pitched the required minimum of innings… Stockton owns a 22-16 record to start the second half, good for second in the north division.

 

Trevor Hurley: A 2008 selection by the Texas Rangers, Hurley made one start last week for the Spokane Indians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, taking a no decision against Eugene on Thursday… The right-hander allowed six earned runs on 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 6.0 innings for his second-straight no decision… Spokane went on to win the game, 7-6, in 11 innings… The Tomball, Texas, native, who has also pitched in Low A this season, is 1-2 with a 4.95 ERA in eight starts in short-season, while he has allowed 15 walks and struck out 42 batters in 40.0 innings… Hurley is fifth in the Northwest League in strikeouts, tied for 10th in innings pitched and 16th in both ERA and WHIP (1.53)… Spokane is third in the east division with a 17-25 record.

Steve Murphy: In five games last week for the Frisco RoughRiders of the Texas League (Double A), Murphy, who spent two months at Triple A Oklahoma City, was 4-for-20 (.200) with one double, a homer and three RBI… On Monday against Corpus Christi, Murphy recorded a sacrifice fly before going 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored on Thursday against Midland… He capped his week with two-run homer on Saturday at San Antonio… A 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Murphy played in 36 games for Oklahoma City before being placed on the DL and sent down to Double A… In 33 games this season in Triple A, Murphy is hitting .231 (24-for-104) with three doubles, two triples, two homers and 10 RBI… Oklahoma City is 54-53 this season, 5.0 games back of Albuquerque in the Pacific Coast League American South Division… In Double A, Murphy is hitting .218 (31-for-142) in 42 games with 10 doubles, one triple, six homers and 24 RBI… Frisco is tied for first in the south division with a 20-16 second-half record.

 

Justin Murray: A 2008 draft pick by the Oakland A’s, Murray made three appearances last week as the closer for the Kane County Cougars of the Class A Midwest League… On Monday against Dayton, Murray recorded a blown save as he entered with a 2-1 lead and allowed a solo homer in the top of the ninth… However, Murray picked up the win as the Cougars won in the bottom of the ninth… Murray came back on Tuesday to tally his ninth save of the season after allowing one hit and a walk with two strikeouts against Cedar Rapids… The right-hander also appeared in a lopsided loss on Saturday when he allowed a solo home run at Lansing… In 25 appearances for the Cougars this season, Murray is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA and nine saves… The right-hander has allowed eight earned runs on 30 hits with eight walks and 32 strikeouts in 29.1 innings… His nine saves are tied for 10th in the Midwest League… Kane County is fifth in the western division with a 16-20 second-half record after winning the first-half division title.

 

Eli Rumler: Rumler, a 2007 draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, went 0-for-6 in just two games last week for the Visalia Rawhide of the Class A Advanced California League… The second baseman, who spent two weeks in Double A Mobile earlier this season, was hit by a pitch and scored a run on Friday against Bakersfield… In 63 games this season in High A, Rumler is hitting .200 (46-for-230) with eight doubles, two homers and 13 RBI… The Little River, Kan., product was 2-for-21 with a run scored, a double and four RBI in eight games for Double A Mobile… Visalia has struggled in the second half as it is 13-25 since the break.

 

Nate Tenbrink: Tenbrink, a 2008 draft pick by the Seattle Mariners, enjoyed a 7-for-23 (304) week in six games for the Clinton LumberKings of the Class A Midwest League… The first baseman had a great series at Lansing Tuesday through Thursday as he was 5-for-13 with two RBI, including a 3-for-5 night on Wednesday… He also recorded a multi-hit game at Great Lakes on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a RBI double… In 96 games this season, Tenbrink is hitting .287 (100-for-349) with 19 doubles, five triples, eight home runs and 48 RBI… He is tied for 12th in the Midwest League in triples, tied for 12th in runs scored, tied for 15th in hits and total bases (153), 20th in OPS (.802) and 23rd in average… Clinton is 12-16 in the second half.


Carlos Torres:
Torres, who became the first Wildcat to play in a major-league game in nine years on July 22 when he was called up by the White Sox, made two starts for Triple A Charlotte of the International League last week… A 2004 selection by the White Sox, Torres, who remains on the 40-man roster for the White Sox, took a no decision on Monday at Rochester after allowing one earned run on two hits with five walks and seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings… The Knights won the game, 3-2, with a walk-off homer… Torres then took the win at Louisville on Saturday after allowing two earned runs on five hits with two walks and another seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings… In 19 games in Triple A this season, which includes 18 starts, Torres holds a 9-4 record with one save and a 2.21 ERA, which is tops in the International League… In 110.0 innings pitched, the right-hander has allowed 27 earned runs on 79 hits with 45 walks and 110 strikeouts… Torres is tied for second in the International League in complete games (2) and shutouts (1), third in strikeouts, tied for third in wins, tied for fifth in WHIP (1.13) and 16th in innings pitched… Torres earned a quality start in his MLB debut on July 22 when he took a no decision against Tampa Bay after allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings… Charlotte is fourth in the International League South Division with a 51-57 record.

 

Byron Wiley: Wiley, a 2008 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, extended his hitting streak to 13 games after a 7-for-20 (.350) week with a double, a home run and three RBI for the Dayton Dragons of the Class A Midwest League… The right fielder went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer on Tuesday against Peoria and 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI single on Saturday against Burlington… Wiley raised his average six points from last week as he is now hitting .279 (77-for-276) in 79 games this season with 19 doubles, five triples, 11 homers and 54 RBI… Wiley is fourth in the Midwest League in OPS (.895), fifth in slugging percentage (.504), ninth in on-base percentage (.391), tied for 10th in walks (53), tied for 12th in triples and RBI, and tied for 13th in homers… Dayton slid to fifth place in the eastern division in the second half after going 2-4 last week… The Dragons are 16-19 in the second half.
