K-State Summer Baseball Update: August 4

MANHATTAN, Kan. Each Monday, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.


Coastal Plain League

Playing for the Fayetteville (N.C.) Swap Dogs, sophomores-to-be Carter Jurica and Jason King continue to rank among the team’s leading hitters... Jurica raised his average 22 points after going 10-for-26 last week with two doubles, one triple, one home run and eight RBI... He now holds a .257 average as the team’s third-leading hitter, with six doubles, one triple, one home run and 22 RBI... He is also 15-for-17 in stolen base attempts... At Wilson on Thursday, Jurica went 3-for-5 with one double, one home run and three RBI in a 5-2 win... King’s average dropped after a 5-for-25 week with two doubles and two RBI, but the third baseman continues to rank as the team’s second-leading hitter at .258 with eight doubles, two triples, one home run and 14 RBI... The Swap Dogs, who went 4-3 last week, are in fourth place in the south division during the second half with an 11-16 record.


Jayhawk Baseball League

Pitcher Thomas Rooke and catcher Daniel Dellasega have each spent part of the summer playing for the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons... Rooke holds a 0-1 record and a 7.20 ERA in seven appearances, including four starts, but has not pitched in the last month... Updated stats for the Griffins are not available, but as of last week, Dellasega was hitting .291 with three doubles, one triple, one home run and six RBI... Nevada is slated to play the Casa Grande (Ariz.) Cotton Kings on Monday in the second round of the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series, held in Wichita, Kan... Senior-to-be Jordan Cruz joined the Derby Twins midway through the season after recovering from an injury sustained during K-State’s season... Stats for the Twins have not been updated since July 27... At that time, Cruz was hitting .292 (14-for-48) with four doubles, five home runs and 14 RBI... Derby is scheduled to play the Conejo (Calif.) Oaks on Tuesday in the NBC World Series.


Texas Collegiate League

Justin Bloxom, playing for the league-leading McKinney Marshalls, was 2-for-9 with one run and two walks in just three games played last week... Against Brazos Valley on Saturday, Bloxom went 2-for-4 to help the Marshalls claim a 6-5 victory... On the season, Bloxom holds a .243 average with four doubles, six home runs and 21 RBI... He is tied for first in the league in home runs and is tied for 11th in RBI.


West Coast Collegiate Baseball League

WCCBL All-Stars Dane Yelovich and A.J. Morris are playing for the 12-25 Moses Lake Pirates this summer... Yelovich went 4-for-19 last week with three RBI, six runs scored and two stolen bases... His best game of the week came on Sunday at Spokane as he went 2-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and two steals... Yelovich is hitting .257 on the season with six doubles, 17 RBI and is 21-for-29 in stolen base attempts, which leads the league... Morris threw in two games last week, starting and taking the loss on Thursday against Bend Elks as he allowed nine runs on six hits in 5.0 innings... He came back on Saturday to appear as a relief pitcher for the first time this season, recording a save after 1.1 innings of shutout ball, while walking one and striking out three... He is 1-2 on the year with one save, a 3.57 ERA and 50 strikeouts... His ERA ranks 17th in the WCCBL, while his 50 strikeouts ranks second in the league... Furthermore, he is holding opponents to a .194 average, which also ranks second.


Central Plains Baseball League

Future seniors Lance Hoge (pitcher) and Rob Vaughn (catcher), junior Adam Muenster (infield), sophomore Justin Lindsey (pitcher) and incoming freshman Nick Martini (outfielder) are playing for the Junction City Generals this summer, but updated stats are not available... The Generals lost their second-round matchup of the 2008 National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series to the Springfield (Mo.) Generals, 3-2, on Saturday... In that game, Hoge went 7.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts, but was saddled with the loss... Junction City came back on Sunday to defeat the San Antonio Phantoms, 7-2, in the losers bracket... In that game, both Martini and Vaughn went 1-for-4, with Vaughn driving in one run.


M.I.N.K. League

Drew Biery and the Topeka Golden Giants were eliminated from the NBC Midwest Regional to end the season... Finals statistics are not available.


Walter Johnson Baseball League

Matt Giller, who redshirted the 2008 season, played for the Salina Blue Jays, who finished the summer 4-20... Final statistics are not available.


2008 Draft Picks

Ben Hornbeck: In two appearances last week, Ben Hornbeck, recorded another win for the Vancouver Canadians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League... A 32nd-round pick by the Oakland Athletics, Hornbeck allowed two runs on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in 2.0 innings against Tri-City on Tuesday... Against Everett on Sunday, Hornbeck threw 4.0 scoreless innings, holding the Aqua Sox hitless while striking out six to pick up the win... Hornbeck is now 2-1 with one save and a 4.50 ERA in 20.0 innings this season... The Canadians are 19-27 on the season and are third place in the west division.


Trevor Hurley: A 26th-round pick by the Texas Rangers, Trevor Hurley appeared in two games last week for the Spokane Indians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League... Against Everett on Monday, the righty gave up three runs on one hit in one inning, issuing four walks and recording one strikeout... In his next outing against Yakima on Friday, Hurley allowed on run on two hits in 2.0 innings and struck out four batters... On the season, Hurley is 2-0 with a 4.37 ERA in 22.2 innings... Spokane continues to lead the east division with a 34-12 record, five games ahead of second-place Boise.


Justin Murray: Justin Murray signed with the Oakland Athletics on Monday and was assigned to the organization’s Rookie Arizona League... A 29th-round draft pick by the A’s in June’s draft, Murray has thrown in one game, a relief appearance against the AZL Giants on Friday... Against the Giants, the right-handed pitcher allowed one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work, while striking out three batters... The AZL Athletics are 3-4 to begin the second half of the season.


Nate Tenbrink: Drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the seventh round, Nate Tenbrink went 4-for-21 with one double, four RBI, three runs scored and one stolen base for the Everett Aqua Sox in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League... The third baseman drove in two runs on Monday against Spokane and also went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI on Saturday at Eugene... In 43 games, Tenbrink is hitting .222 with six doubles, five home runs, 19 RBI and is 20-for-23 in stolen base attempts... He is currently tied for fifth in the league in home runs and is first in the league with 20 stolen bases, six steals better than second place... Everett is in fourth place in the west division with a 17-29 record.


Byron Wiley: A 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Byron Wiley produced his best week of play in the professional ranks, going 8-for-24 with one triple, three home runs, six RBI and seven runs scored for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League... The outfielder went 3-for-4 with one home run and two RBI on Wednesday against Missoula... He backed that up with a 2-for-4 outing with a triple the on Thursday and also homered against the Osprey on Friday...  Wiley’s season average has ascended to .293 with seven doubles, five triples, three home runs and 20 RBI... Billings won the first half of the Pioneer Rookie League North Division is 6-1 to begin the second half.


Daniel Edwards (25th round, Philadelphia Phillies) has not signed.


Other K-State Pros

Adam Cowart: In one appearance last week for Double A Connecticut of the Eastern League, Adam Cowart threw 2.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and striking out one... A 2006 draft pick by San Francisco, Cowart has an 8-6 record and lowered his ERA to 3.73 ERA... He also has 56 strikeouts this season, while issuing 22 walks... He is tied for 11th in the Eastern League in wins, 16th in ERA and tied for 19th in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched)... The Defenders are in fourth place in the northern division at 55-57.


Eric Eymann: Eric Eymann, a 2005 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, went 6-for-17 with one double and one RBI last week for Double A Chattanooga... Eymann recorded three two-hit games at Mississippi on Monday and at Birmingham on Friday and Sunday... A starter in the 2008 Southern League All-Star Game, Eymann is batting an even .300 on the season with 25 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 55 RBI... He is 20th in the Southern League in average, tied for 14th in hits, tied for 12th in doubles, and tied for 16th in RBI... The Lookouts are in fifth place in the north division at 17-26 during the second half of the season.


Jared Goedert: Playing for the Kinston Indians in the Class A Advanced Carolina League, Jared Goedert went 4-for-22 last week with two doubles, five RBI and three runs scored... The third baseman has recorded single-hit games in each of his last four outings and drove in a pair of runs against Salem on Friday... On the season, Goedert is hitting .260 with 20 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 59 RBI and 60 runs scored... He currently sits at 100 hits on the season, the 14th player in the league to reach the 100-hit plateau... Goedert is tied for 12th in runs scored, 14th in hits and 11th in RBI... Kinston is in second place in the southern division during the second half with a 25-17 record.


Steve Murphy: Steve Murphy, a 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, was 6-for-27 last week with two doubles, one home run, six RBI and six runs scored for Double A Frisco in the Texas League... His best game last week came on Thursday against Midland as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI... A starter for the south division in the Texas League All-Star Game, Murphy is hitting .270 on the season with 31 doubles, seven triples, 17 home runs and 75 RBI... The outfielder is tied for 11th in the league in hits, first in doubles, tied for second in triples, tied for seventh in home runs and fourth in RBI... The RoughRiders lead the south division during the second half with a 26-17 record after winning the first half of the season.


Eli Rumler: Eli Rumler, a 2007 draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, went 4-for-18 last week with two home runs, two RBI and four runs scored... Playing for Class A South Bend in the Midwest League, Rumler has homered in back-to-back games, hitting solo shots against Peoria on Saturday and Sunday... Rumler’s average now sits at .225 with 15 doubles, three home runs and 25 RBI... South Bend has held on to the eastern division lead with a 27-16 second-half record, two games ahead of Dayton.


Carlos Torres: Carlos Torres continues to pitch for Triple A Charlotte... A 2004 draft pick by the Chicago White Sox, Torres was originally called up to Triple A from Double A Birmingham on July 10, before being sent back down on July 17... He was then called back up on July 28 and has remained on the Triple A squad... The right-handed pitcher threw 5.0 innings of relief last week in two appearances... On Tuesday against Louisville, Torres pitched 2.0 hitless innings while walking one and striking out four... However, on Saturday against Durham, he allowed one run on one hit in 3.0 innings while walking five and striking out just one... Combined with Double A and Triple A, Torres holds a 9-5 record with a 3.36 ERA in 115.1 innings... The Charlotte Knights are 53-63, eight games back of Durham in the International League South Division... Torres was outstanding at Double A as he held a 9-5 with a 3.20 ERA before being called up... He also struck out 92 while walking just 29... Despite spending three weeks this season in Triple A, Torres is still tied for second in the Southern League (Double A) in wins, third in ERA and 10th in strikeouts... A 2008 Southern League All-Star, Torres also leads the league in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched) at 1.13.
