Kansas State Summer Baseball Update: August 8

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

National Baseball Congress World Series
Seven Wildcats are playing in the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series, which is held July 30-August 13 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan.

Liberal Bee Jays: Ross Kivett, Mitch Meyer and Jared Moore – sophomores for the 2012 season – are playing for the Liberal Bee Jays, who defeated PlayBall Sports on Tuesday, but fell to Valley Center on Saturday… None of the three Wildcats played on Tuesday… Meyer was 0-for-1 with a walk on Saturday, while Moore allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks… The Bee Jays will play Clarinda on Monday in an elimination game.

Topeka Golden Giants: Four more sophomores for the upcoming season – Shane Conlon, Blair DeBord, Gerardo Esquivel and Johnny Fasola – helped the Topeka Golden Giants top the Pueblo Collegians and Nevada Griffons on Monday and Friday, respectively, but the Golden Giants fell to Santa Barbara on Sunday… DeBord was 0-for-4 on Monday, but went 3-for-3 with a double on Friday before going 2-for-3 with a triple and a RBI on Sunday… Conlon recorded three two-hit games, driving in three runs on Monday and two more on Friday… Fasola earned the win in relief on Monday, allowing one hit and striking out three in 2.2 innings… He was also solid on Friday as he pitched 2.0 scoreless innings with three more strikeouts… Esquivel took a no decision on Friday, throwing 5.2 innings and surrendering two unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts… The Golden Giants will take on Haysville on Tuesday in an elimination game.

Alaska Baseball League
A senior for the upcoming season, Matt Applegate helped the Mat-Su Miners finish in second place in the Alaska Baseball League with a 21-15 league record… In five games, including two starts, the right-hander went 3-1 with a 3.14 ERA, allowing five runs on nine hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in 14.1 innings of work.

California Collegiate League
Juniors Tanner Witt and Wade Hinkle helped the San Luis Obispo Blues share the California Collegiate League championship… He hit .262 (33-for-126) with four doubles and 20 RBI in 36 games, while he was a perfect 15-for-15 in stolen base attempts… He ended his summer on an eight-game hitting streak…  Hinkle hit .211 (15-for-71) with four doubles and 10 RBI in 21 games… The Blues finished with a 34-15 record, including a 24-12 mark in the California Collegiate League.

Cape Cod Baseball League
A member of the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League and a sophomore for the upcoming season, Jared King recorded three two-hit games last week, including one in the first round of the CCBL playoffs… The outfielder went 2-for-3 with a RBI on Tuesday against Hyannis, while he also went 3-for-6 with three doubles and a RBI during a Wednesday doubleheader… The Commodores are playing Hyannis in a best-of-three round of the playoffs, and the series is tied at one game apiece with the deciding game on Monday… King drew a walk and scored a run on Friday before going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI on Saturday.
 
Perfect Game Collegiate League
Seniors Kayvon Bahramzadeh, Mike Kindel and Dan ended their run with the Glens Falls Golden Eagles of the Perfect Game Collegiate League by being swept in a best-of-three series in the first round of the playoffs by Amsterdam… Kindel went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two run scored on Monday against Mohawk Valley, then combined to go 3-for-8 in the two playoff games… Klein was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer on Friday in the first game of the playoffs… Bahramzadeh took a no decision in the opening game of the playoffs, throwing 7.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits with a walk and nine strikeouts… Kindel finished the summer by hitting .274 (34-for-124) with eight doubles, a triple, four home runs and 29 RBI in 26 games… Klein was .149 (10-for-67) with six doubles and nine RBI… Bahramzadeh, who saw time in six games with four starts, held a 3-0 record and a 1.80 ERA, while he struck out 23 batters as opposed to six walks… The Golden Eagles won the east division with a 31-17 record.

Texas Collegiate League
Ryan Moore, a junior for the upcoming season, saw time in four games last week for the East Texas Pump Jacks of the Texas Collegiate League… The outfielder recorded a pair of hits, going 1-for-3 on both Monday and Saturday… In 24 games this summer, Moore is hitting .245 (12-for-49) with one RBI, nine walks, nine stolen bases and 14 runs scored… The Pump Jacks, who won the first-half league title, lead league during the second half with an 18-8 record.

Walter Johnson Baseball League
Mitch Meyer and Adam Sonabend, members of the Salina Blue Jays, were named to the 2011 National Baseball Congress (NBC) Midwest Regional All-Tournament team… Sonabend ended his run at the regional with two multi-hit games, going 7-for-14 with a double and two RBI… Meyer, who is now a member of the Liberal Bee Jays for the NBC World Series, went 6-for-15 with a double, two triples and one RBI in the Midwest Regional… Blake Freeman also threw for the Blue Jays, going 0-1 with save after allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits with three walks.

West Coast League
Jake Doller and Matt Giller are playing for the Cowlitz Black Bears of the West Coast League… Doller pitched 0.1 innings on Sunday against Walla Walla… In 10 appearances, Doller is 1-1 with a 6.14 ERA, 10 walks and 11 strikeouts in 14.2 innings… Giller has not played in the past month… He holds a .122 (5-for-41) average with two RBI in 12 games… Cowlitz is third in the west division with a 27-24 record.

K-State Pros
James Allen (Rookie: Billings/Cincinnati): Allen, a seventh-round pick by Cincinnati in 2011, earned a pair of saves in two outings last week for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League… Allen allowed an unearned run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts on Tuesday against Missoula… On Sunday, the right-hander pitched 1.1 perfect innings with a pair of fanned batters… In 15 outings this season, Allen holds a 2-0 record with a 1.64 ERA and six saves… He has allowed four earned runs on 19 hits with four walks and 22 strikeouts… His six saves are tied for first in the Pioneer League… The Mustangs are 3-5 to begin the second half of the season, which is third in the north division.

Drew Biery (Double A: Richmond/San Francisco): Biery, a 2009 draft pick of San Francisco, remains on the disabled list for the Double A Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Eastern League after being placed on the DL on June 11… The third baseman was 7-for-32 (.219) with a double and four RBI in 10 games in Double A before going on the DL… Prior to his time in Double A, Biery played in 19 games for Low A Augusta of the South Atlantic League, hitting .280 with three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI.

Justin Bloxom (High A: Potomac/Washington): A 2009 draft pick by Washington, Bloxom carded two hits in five games last week for the Potomac Nationals of the High A Carolina League… He went 1-for-5 on Thursday at Salem, while he was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored on Friday at Myrtle Beach… In 77 games this season, Bloxom is hitting .270 (76-for-282) with 19 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 42 RBI… The third baseman is 12th in the league in batting average, while he is fifth in slugging percentage (.454) and ninth in OPS (.790)… The Nationals are in second place during the second half with a 23-19 record, three games behind Frederick for the northern division lead.

Jared Goedert (Triple A: Columbus/Cleveland): Goedert, a 2006 draft pick by Cleveland, tallied a pair of two-hit games last week for Triple A Columbus of the International League… He went 2-for-3 with two walks on Monday against Norfolk, while he was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored on Friday against Syracuse… In 50 games this season for the Clippers, the third baseman is hitting .222 (39-for-176) with eight doubles, seven home runs and 17 RBI… After recovering from an injury in spring training, Goedert played in eight games for Double A Akron of the Eastern League, hitting .276 (8-for-29) with two doubles, three homers and nine RBI… The Clippers continue to dominate the International League West Division with a 73-42 record, 13.5 games ahead of second-place Louisville.

Ben Hornbeck (Double A: Midland/Oakland): Hornbeck was placed on the disabled list on June 30 by Double A Midland and he remains on the DL… A 2008 draft pick by Oakland, the left-hander has seen time at three different levels this year, pitching for both High A Stockton and Triple A Sacramento before joining the RockHounds… He holds a combined 1-0 record and a 3.22 ERA with seven walks and 30 strikeouts this season at all three levels.

Kyle Hunter (Class A Short-Season: Everett/Seattle): Hunter, a 31st-round draft pick by Seattle this season, was promoted to the Everett Aqua Sox of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… He pitched in two games last week for Everett, picking up a win on Thursday at Yakima after throwing 3.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts… He also pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout on Sunday against Vancouver… The left-hander ended his time at Pulaski of the Rookie Appalachian League with a 1-2 record and a 1.61 ERA in 10 appearances… The Aqua Sox are tied with Eugene for the Northwest League West Division second-half lead with a 7-5 record.

Trevor Hurley (High A: Myrtle Beach/Texas): Hurley, a 2008 draft pick by Texas, pitched twice last week for High A Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League… The right-hander suffered the loss on Thursday when he allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings at Kinston… He then allowed two unearned runs on one hit with two walks and a strikeout on Sunday against Potomac… In 30 outings, Hurley is 1-4 with a 3.05 ERA and four saves… He has allowed 21 walks and struck out 53 batters in 41.1 innings… Myrtle Beach, which took home the Carolina League Southern Division first-half title, is in third place during the second half with a 20-22 mark.

Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): Jurica, a third-round draft pick by San Francisco last year, was put on the disabled list by High A San Jose of the California League on June 12… The shortstop began a rehab assignment last week for the AZL Giants… In six games, Jurica went 5-for-17 with four RBI… He was hitting .239 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI for High A San Jose before going to the DL… San Francisco, which took home the first-half division crown, is third place in the California League North Division with a 23-20 second-half record.

Jason King (Class A Short-Season: Connecticut/Detroit): King, a fourth-round selection by Detroit in 2011, had two hits in six games last week for the Connecticut Tigers of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… The third baseman went 1-for-4 with a RBI on Monday against Batavia, while he was 1-for-3 at Auburn on Thursday… King is hitting .239 (42-for-176) with six doubles, three triples, six home runs and 26 RBI in 47 games… The third baseman is tied for sixth in the league in home runs… The Tigers are in third place in the Stedler Division with a 20-27 record.

Evan Marshall (High A Visalia/Arizona): Marshall, a fourth-round selection by Arizona in this year’s draft, saw action in two games last week for High A Visalia of the California League… The right-hander, who was promoted from Class A Short-Season Yakima last month, allowed an unearned run on one hit with a strikeout in one inning on Tuesday against Rancho Cucamonga… He then threw 2.0 scoreless innings on Saturday at Stockton, allowing two hits with a walk and a strikeout… In six games for the Rawhide, Marshall holds a 2.16 ERA, allowing two runs on seven hits with five walks and eight strikeouts in 8.1 innings… He ended his time in Yakima with a 0.75 ERA and two saves in 11 appearances… Visalia is 19-24 during the second half.

Nick Martini (Class A Short-Season Batavia/St. Louis): A seventh-round selection by St. Louis this season, Martini recorded a pair of hits in four games last week for the Batavia Muckdogs of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… The outfielder went 1-for-3 with a walk on Tuesday at Hudson Valley, while he also drove in a run against the Renegades on Thursday… Martini then went 1-for-3 on Saturday against Williamsport… Martini is hitting .163 (21-for-129) with two doubles, two triples and 14 RBI… Batavia is fifth in the Pinckney Division with a 24-26 mark.

A.J. Morris (AZL Cubs/Chicago NL): Morris, a fourth-round draft choice of Washington in 2009, was traded to the Chicago Cubs during the offseason and has not pitched this year as he is rehabbing from offseason surgery.

Adam Muenster (Rookie Billings/Cincinnati): A 2010 draft selection by Cincinnati, Muenster is a member of the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League, but he did not play last week… In 16 games, the second baseman is hitting .200 (12-for-60) with four doubles, a triple, two home runs and six RBI in 16 games… The Mustangs are 3-5 to begin the second half of the season, which is third in the north division.

Nate Tenbrink (Double A Jackson/Seattle): Tenbrink, a seventh-round draft pick by Seattle in 2008, was placed on the disabled list for Double A Jackson on June 30 and remains on the DL… The third baseman was hitting .218 (46-for-211) with nine doubles, six triples, six home runs and 25 RBI in 64 games for Jackson before going on the DL.

Carlos Torres (Nippon Japanese League/Yomiuri Giants): A former starting pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, Torres is playing for the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Japanese League after signing with the Giants during the offseason… The right-hander has seen time in five games for Yomiuri, holding a 1-1 record and a 5.68 ERA… Yomiuri is in third place in the Central League with a 39-41-6 record.
