K-State Summer Baseball Update: August 9

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes a look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

Cape Cod League
Junior-to-be Nick Martini ended the regular season on a high note in the final three games for the Falmouth Commodores… The outfielder was 5-for-11 to end the regular season, including a 3-for-4 effort with a double, a home run and two RBI in the final regular season game Wednesday against Hyannis… The Commodores were swept in a three-game playoff series by Cotuit to end their season… In 41 games this summer, Martini went.253 (37-for-146) with six doubles, two triples, two home runs and 21 RBI… Falmouth finished second in the western division with a 21-22-1 record.

Coastal Plain League
Senior-to-be Kent Urban went 0-for-3 in his final game of the season for the Petersburg Generals… In 28 games, Urban hit .242 (24-for-99) with six doubles, two home runs and 22 RBI… Junior-to-be Kyle Hunter also played for the Generals, going 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA… The left-hander allowed 11 earned runs on 25 hits with 15 walks and 33 strikeouts in 33.0 innings… Petersburg finished the season 13-43.

National Baseball Congress World Series
Several Wildcats are competing in the 2010 National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series, which runs July 30-August 13 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan.

Chillicothe Mudcats: The Mudcats, who won their first game of the World Series, lost two games last week to be eliminated from the tournament… Junior-to-be Jake Brown, who was 2-for-4 in the first game, went 1-for-3 with a run scored in a losing effort against Haysville on Monday before going hitless in two at-bats on Saturday against Gunnison… After going 3-for-5 in the first game, incoming freshman Jared King was hitless in his final nine at-bats of the event.

El Dorado Broncos: El Dorado, the defending NBC World Series Champions, went 1-2 last week to be eliminated from the World Series… In a losing effort against St. Joseph on Monday, junior-to-be Matt Giller went 1-for-2, while sophomore-to-be Blair DeBord was 0-for-3… In the losers’ bracket, the Broncos edged out a win against Nevada, 8-7, in 11 innings Wednesday, a game that saw Giller go 0-for-3 with a run scored… El Dorado was eliminated on Saturday in a 6-2 loss to Derby, a game in which neither Wildcat played.

Liberal Bee Jays: Liberal, which fields sophomores-to-be Nick Cocking, Jake Doller and Tyler Sturges, along with junior-to-be Brandon Faulkner, has gone 4-0 in the World Series… After going 0-for-5 in the first two games of the tournament, Cocking was 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored on Saturday against Santa Barbara before a 1-for-2 effort with another double, two walks and two runs scored Sunday against St. Joseph… Sturges tossed three innings in the St. Joseph win, allowing one run on two hits and a walk… Faulkner worked 1.2 innings of relief in a 9-7 win against San Diego on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts… The Bee Jays will face either the Haysville Heat or the Denver Cougars on Tuesday.

Texas Collegiate League
Sophomore-to-be Chase Graskewicz joined the East Texas PumpJacks two weeks ago after concluding play for the Junction City Generals… His best game of the week came on Thursday against McKinney when he went 1-for-3 with two RBI… In eight games for the PumpJacks, the catcher is 5-for-17 (.294) with six RBI and three runs scored… East Texas is 31-18 overall and leads the TCL with a 17-7 second-half record.

K-State Pros
Drew Biery: A 2009 draft choice by San Francisco, Biery was 4-for-19 with a double and six RBI in six games last week for the High A San Jose Giants… The third baseman logged a pair of RBI on Tuesday against Stockton before going 2-for-4 with three RBI against the Ports on Thursday… In 92 games this season, Biery is hitting .259 with nine doubles, a triple, 13 home runs and 57 RBI… The California League North Division first half championship, the Giants are 19-24 in the second half and 64-49 overall.
 
Justin Bloxom: Bloxom, an 11th-round selection by the Washington Nationals last year, recorded a hit in all three games he played in for the Class A Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League… On Thursday, the first baseman ripped a two-run homer against Lexington… In 104 games this season, Bloxom is hitting .309 with 29 doubles, four triples, 11 homers and 70 RBI to go along with 10 stolen bases… He leads the league in hits, is third in average and total bases (199), sixth in RBI, tied for seventh in doubles and ninth in both slugging percentage (.476) and OPS (.831)… The Suns, who are 52-61 overall this season, are 16-27 in the second half to sit seventh in the northern division.
 
Adam Cowart: Cowart, a second-year pitcher for the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, led the Wingnuts to a 10-0 win at Sioux City on Saturday… The right-hander tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just five hits with a walk and three strikeouts… Coupled with a win in his last start on August 1, it was the first time since May 29 and June 5 Cowart had won consecutive starts… In 16 starts for Wichita, Cowart is 5-6 with a 4.09 ERA and has allowed just 26 walks in 92.1 innings (2.53 walks-per-nine innings)… Wichita is 28-29 this season and 18-11 in the second-half, just 2.5 games out of first place.

Eric Eymann: Coming off the 7-Day Disabled List, Eymann recorded a 7-for-20 week with a triple and four RBI in six games last week for Double A Carolina of the Southern League… A 2005 selection by the Cincinnati Reds, Eymann was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI on Wednesday at Huntsville… He also went 2-for-4 against Chattanooga on Saturday… For his efforts, the first baseman was promoted to Triple A Louisville on Sunday for the first time this season after seeing action in 33 games for the Bats a year ago… In 90 games this season in Double A, Eymann is hitting .259 with 18 doubles, two triples, five homers and 38 RBI… The Mudcats are third in the Southern League North Division second-half standings at 21-22, while they are 51-61 overall.

Jared Goedert: In five games last week for Triple A Columbus, Goedert went 4-for-21 with a pair of doubles and three RBI… A 2006 draft pick by Cleveland, Goedert produced doubles in back-to-back games against Louisville on Tuesday and Wednesday, with two RBI on Wednesday… He also went 2-for-4 with a RBI on Thursday at Buffalo… The third baseman, who was promoted from Double A in early June, is hitting .281 with 18 doubles, 17 home runs and 40 RBI in just 55 games for the Clippers… His slugging percentage (.593) and OPS (.955) would rank second in the International League if he met the required minimum of at-bats… Goedert does rank ninth in the league home runs despite playing just half the season in Triple A… Columbus sits atop the west division at 67-49.

Ben Hornbeck: Hornbeck, a 2008 draft selection by Oakland, took a no decision in his only start last week on Thursday at San Jose… The left-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings… Hornbeck, who began the season at Double A Midland, is 4-3 with a 5.35 ERA in High A… In 75.2 innings pitched, he has allowed 36 walks as opposed to 92 strikeouts, including 46 in his last seven starts (6.57 per game)… He ranks 13th in the league in strikeouts, but tops among pitchers with 15 or less starts… Stockton is 54-59 overall but 23-20 in the second half to sit second in the California League North Division standings… They are four games back in the division standings and three games back in the wild card.

Trevor Hurley: A 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star, Hurley saw action in one game last week for High A Bakersfield of the California League… A 2008 draft pick by Texas that was promoted in early July, Hurley allowed one run on one hit with a strikeout in a Blaze win at Visalia on Thursday… In eight appearances in High A, Hurley is 0-1 with a 2.51 ERA, allowing four earned runs on nine hits with eight walks and 14 strikeouts in 14.1 innings… The right-hander was 0-1 with a 1.43 ERA and 11 saves in 26 appearances at Class A Hickory before being promoted… Bakersfield, which finished fifth in the north division standings in the first half, leads the division during the second half with a 27-16 record.

Carter Jurica: Jurica, a third-round selection this year by San Francisco, is in the midst of a five-game hitting streak for Salem-Keizer of the Class A Short Season Northwest League… The shortstop recorded single hits in each of the last five games, all coming on the road at Spokane and Eugene… In 42 games this season, Jurica is hitting .197 (31-for-157) with three doubles, three triples, three home runs, 20 RBI and 16 runs scored… The Volcanoes are 20-30 overall and 3-9 in the second half to sit fourth in the west division.

A.J. Morris: A fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals in 2009, Morris remains on the 7-Day DL after being placed on the list on July 28… In 13 games this season for the High A Potomac Nationals, including 12 starts, Morris is 3-2 with a 3.30 ERA… He has allowed 22 walks and struck out 53 in 60.0 innings… The P-Nats hold a 54-56 overall record, while they lead the northern division during the second half with a 23-17 mark.

Adam Muenster: Muenster, a 29th-round draft choice by Cincinnati, recorded hits in all three games last week for the Arizona League (AZL) Reds… He went 1-for-3 against the AZL Cubs on Monday and the AZL Royals on Tuesday before a 2-for-3 effort on Sunday against the AZL Athletics… In 27 games this season, Muenster is 18-for-83 (.217) with two doubles, eight RBI and 14 walks… The AZL Reds are third in the central division at 19-20.

Justin Murray: A 2008 draft selection by Oakland, Murray had two relief appearances last week for the High A Stockton Ports of the California League… The right-hander took the loss after allowing an unearned run with two walks and strikeout in 0.1 innings at San Jose on Wednesday, but rebounded by allowing just one run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in 3.2 innings on Saturday against High Desert… Murray, who has spent time in both High A and Double A this season, is 7-5 with a 4.04 ERA in 24 games between the two levels… He has worked 104.2 innings this season, while walking 58 and striking out 75… Stockton is 54-59 overall but 23-20 in the second half to sit second in the California League North Division standings… They are four games back in the division standings and three games back in the wild card.

Nate Tenbrink: In seven games last week for Double A West Tenn of the Southern League, Tenbrink went 7-for-28 with three doubles and three RBI… A 2008 selection by Seattle, the infielder/outfielder recorded two-hit games at Chattanooga on Tuesday and Wednesday, while he drove in two runs on Tuesday… Over the weekend against Montgomery, he went 1-for-3 with a double on Saturday before going 2-for-5 with two doubles on Sunday… In 46 games in Double A, Tenbrink is hitting .275 (42-for-153) with eight doubles, two triples, four homers and 22 RBI since being promoted to the club from High A High Desert on May 26… West Tenn is 59-53 overall and 20-23 in the second half to sit fourth in the north division standings.

Carlos Torres: A 2004 selection by the Chicago White Sox, Torres was called up and started for the White Sox in the second game of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday at Detroit… The right-hander took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits with five walks and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings… Torres allowed all five runs in the first two innings, but settled down to toss four scoreless innings… He was able to bounce back in Triple A on Sunday against Toledo when he threw 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits with a walk and four strikeouts to earn his first win since July 6… Torres, a 2010 Triple A All-Star, is 8-7 with a 3.23 ERA in 136.1 innings pitched with 58 walks and 126 strikeouts in Triple A this season… The right-hander is second in the International League strikeouts, third in innings pitched and fifth in ERA… Charlotte sits second in the south division with an even 58-58 record.

Rob Vaughn: Vaughn, a 30th-round pick in the 2009 draft by the Chicago White Sox, played in four games last week for the Great Falls Voyagers of the Rookie Pioneer League… The catcher was 0-for-2 on Tuesday against Missoula but drew three walks… On Wednesday he went 1-for-4 before recording a pinch-hit single on Friday against Helena… In 18 games this season, Vaughn is 11-for-43 (.256) with five RBI… Great Falls won the north division during the first half with a 23-15 record and leads the division during the second half at 6-3.

Byron Wiley: A free agent signee by Arizona this season, Wiley is a member of the Visalia Rawhide of the California League… The outfielder has not played since June 14 and remains on the 7-Day Disabled List… In nine games this season for Visalia, Wiley is hitting .286 (10-for-35) with a homer and seven RBI… The Rawhide are 54-53 overall and 24-13 in the second half to sit fourth in the north division.
