K-State Summer Baseball Update: August 10

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

Alaska Baseball League
The Alaska Glacier Pilots, which fielded senior-to-be Daniel Dellasega, ended the season with a 24-24 record, including a 24-20 mark in the ABL... Dellasega finished the season with a .209 (23-for-110) average with three doubles and 11 RBI... He was also 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts... Another senior-to-be, Mark Joukoff, helped the Anchorage Bucs finish the season with a 32-21-1 record overall and a 26-19 tally in ABL play... In 13 appearances, including seven starts, Joukoff earned a 5-4 record and a 3.66 ERA... The right-hander allowed 19 earned runs on 44 hits with 12 walks and 24 strikeouts in 46.2 innings.

Central Plains Baseball League
Mike Kindel, Nick Cocking, James Allen, Matt Applegate, Kayvon Bahramzadeh and signee Brandon Faulkner led the Junction City Generals to a final 23-12 record... Applegate finished the season as the top starter in terms of ERA at 1.83, while he tallied a 4-1 record... The sophomore-to-be allowed 10 earned runs on 45 hits with 14 walks and 32 strikeouts in 49.0 innings, while he also recorded one save... Faulkner was second on the team with a 2.61 ERA and a 5-1 record in eight starts, allowing 15 earned runs on 35 hits with 18 walks and 30 strikeouts in 51.2 innings... He also limited opponents to a .170 batting average... Kindel finished the season with a .218 (17-for-78) average two doubles, a triple, one homer and nine RBI, while he was a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts... Cocking finished the year hitting .196 (19-for-97) with two doubles, a homer and 12 RBI... He was also perfect on the base paths, stealing 15 bases without being caught... Coming off a leg injury during the 2009 season, Bahramzadeh allowed six earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts in 9.1 innings.

Coastal Plain League
Senior-to-be Ryan Daniel and the Fayetteville SwampDogs finished the regular season with a 30-23 record and advanced to the Petitt Cup Playoffs... In four starts during the regular season, Daniel went 1-2 with a 4.98 ERA, surrendering 12 earned runs on 27 hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts in 21.2 innings... With a 3-2 victory over Wilson on Thursday, the SwampDogs advanced to the second round of the playoffs, but fell to No. 1 seed Forest City to end their season.

Jayhawk Baseball League
With victories on Monday, Friday and Sunday, Jayhawk League and National Baseball Congress (NBC) Midwest Regional Champion El Dorado Broncos, which field sophomores-to-be Matt Giller, Justin Lindsey and Cameron Welch, advanced in the NBC World Series... The Broncos defeated the Katy (Texas) Collegians, 9-6, on Monday before a 5-2 win over the Southern Cal Bombers on Friday... Against the Bombers, Giller went 1-for-3 with a double, while Lindsey tossed eight effective innings, allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and eight strikeouts to pick up the win... El Dorado then advanced with a 6-1 win over the Gunnison Co. Colts, where Giller was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base... In three NBC World Series appearances, including two starts, Giller is 3-for-7 (.429) with a double and a run scored... Lindsey is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in one start... El Dorado faces Santa Barbara on Monday, with the winner advancing to play on Wednesday.

M.I.N.K. League
Jake Brown, Evan Marshall, Nick Martini and signee Jake Doller led the Topeka Golden Giants to a final record of 18-16... The Golden Giants finished their season with a 2-1 win over Clarinda on July 18... The Golden Giants did not compete in the postseason due to injuries and other roster departures... Final stats were not available for the Golden Giants... As of June 20, Brown was 0-for-15 with six walks and two hit-by-pitches... The second baseman also scored four runs and stole three bases... Marshall started against St. Joseph on June 18, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts... That came on the heels of a 7.0 scoreless-innings outing against the Nevada Griffons on June 9... The sophomore-to-be had allowed three runs on eight hits in 15.0 innings with no walks and nine strikeouts... Doller, an incoming freshman, started against Beatrice on June 11 and threw 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts, but suffered the loss... As of June 20, Martini was hitting .250 (4-for-16) in five games with five walks, a hit-by-pitch and a pair of stolen bases.

Prospect League
Incoming junior-college transfer David Allday and the Springfield Sliders concluded their season with a 22-32 record this summer... In four games last week, Allday was 4-for-11 (.364) with six walks and five runs scored... On Thursday against Quincy, the infielder went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored, while he also scored a pair of runs on Friday against Dupage... In 36 games this summer, Allday tallied a .261 (29-for-111) average with six doubles, two triples, three homers and 13 RBI... Muenster only played in 20 games for the Sliders this summer due to an undisclosed injury... The infielder/outfielder finished with a .357 (25-for-70) average with a double, two triples, one home run and 10 RBI.

Sierra Baseball League
The San Luis Obispo Blues, which fielded Jason King for a majority of the summer, finished the season with a 40-12 record... King, who played in 19 games this summer, hit .338 (24-for-73) with three doubles, two triples, 13 walks and nine RBI.

Texas Collegiate League
Thomas Rooke and the McKinney Marshals concluded their season with an 18-28 record... In his last start of the summer, the Spring, Texas, native took a no decision after he allowed one earned run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings against East Texas on Friday... In eight appearances this season, including seven starts, the left-hander went 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA, allowing 12 earned runs on 39 hits with 22 walks and 44 strikeouts in 46.2 innings... He finished tied for 10th in the TCL in strikeouts and tied for 11th in wins... Jurica finished his summer by playing in just 11 games due to an undisclosed injury... Jurica was second on the team in hitting at .302 (13-for-43) with a double, a homer and four RBI.

Walter Johnson League
Daniel Rumsey, Kyle Hunter and Chad Jasman played for the Salina Bluejays this summer, which saw its season come to an end in the Walter Johnson Baseball League Tournament on July 26... Salina defeated the Team Elite Kings on July 25, but lost to South Division Champion Valley Center in the winner's bracket and Park City in the loser's bracket... Rumsey, who was selected to the Walter Johnson All-League Team, finished second on the team in average at .366 (41-for-138)... The Tomball, Texas, product tallied four doubles, one triple, one home run and 23 RBI in 33 games... Hunter was 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 9.0 innings... Jasman was 2-2 with a 7.22 ERA in six games... The right-hander surrendered 23 earned runs on 35 hits with 19 walks and 17 strikeouts in 28.2 innings.

2009 Draft Picks
Drew Biery: Following a down week the week prior, Biery bounced back during a four-game set against Spokane as the third baseman was 5-for-13 (.385) with two doubles and four RBI for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League... Drafted in the 22nd round by San Francisco, Biery was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI against the Indians on Monday, but the Volcanoes dropped the contest, 9-5... Biery recorded one hit in each of the next three games and drove in another run on Tuesday... In 39 games this season, the Arlington, Texas, native is hitting .362 (54-for-149) with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 35 RBI... Biery continues to leads the Northwest League in average as he is 30 points better than Mario Martinez, who is second... Biery is also third in OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage; .955), tied for third in RBI, fifth in on-base percentage (.432) and slugging percentage (.523), tied for fifth in hits, tied for seventh in runs scored (33), tied for 10th in total bases (78), tied for 12th in doubles, tied for 17th in homers and tied for 20th in walks (17)... The Volcanoes continue to lead the west division with a Northwest League-best 32-17 record.

Justin Bloxom: An 11th-round draft pick by the Washington Nationals, Bloxom went hitless until Sunday as the designated hitter was 2-for-24 (.083) six games last week for the Vermont Lake Monsters of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League... After going 0-for-4 in each of the first five games last week, Bloxom salvaged the week by going 2-for-4 with a single and a solo homer against Mahoning Valley on Sunday... In 43 games this season, Bloxom is hitting .215 (32-for-149) with two doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI... Bloxom has also recorded 24 walks, which is tied for eighth in the league... After going 3-4 last week, Vermont remained in third place in the Stedler Division with a 24-26 record.

Jordan Cruz: Cruz, an undrafted free-agent acquisition by the Detroit Tigers, lost his hitting streak, which reached seven games, but still produced in four games last week for the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Tigers as he went 4-for-13 (.308) with a pair of homers, three RBI and three runs scored... The outfielder went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a RBI single on Monday against the GCL Blue Jays to extend his hitting streak to seven games, but went hitless the next two contests... Cruz rebounded with another two-hit game on Saturday at the GCL Braves as he added another solo homer... Cruz raised his average to .280 (37-for-132) in 38 games this season with 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 25 RBI and 22 runs scored... Cruz, a native of Hutchinson, Kan., is tied for first in the Gulf Coast League in home runs, second in total bases (72) and slugging percentage (.545), third in doubles and RBI, fourth in OPS (.912), tied for fifth in runs scored, tied for seventh in hits, tied for 13th in walks (15), tied for 17th in triples, 19th in on-base percentage (.367) and 20th in average... The GCL Tigers remained tied for third in the north division at 19-21.

Lance Hoge: Hoge, a 39th-round draft pick by the New York Mets who struggled in his first two outings for the Savannah Sand Gnats of the Class A South Atlantic League, bounced back with a quality relief appearance and a start last week... The left-hander tossed two scoreless innings at Rome on Wednesday, allowing two hits and striking out one... After going 0-2 in the first two starts following his promotion, Hoge started on Saturday and threw 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing five hits with no walks and four strikeouts... Hoge, who was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA for the Brooklyn Cyclones of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League prior to his July 26 promotion, is 0-2 and lowered his ERA from 6.75 to 3.86, having allowed six earned runs on 18 hits in 14.0 innings... Even more impressive is that he has not allowed a walk as opposed to his 11 strikeouts... Savannah is fourth in the South Atlantic League Southern Division with a 20-21 second-half record.

A.J. Morris: Morris, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Washington Nationals, rebounded from a disappointing Class A debut on July 30 as the right-hander tallied a quality start on Tuesday at Delmarva for Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League... The Humble, Texas, product allowed one earned run on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work... The Suns scored three runs in the ninth to break open and 1-1 tie and win, 4-1... In a pair of predetermined starts for the GCL Nationals earlier this summer, Morris tossed 5.0 hitless innings with four strikeouts... Hagerstown is seventh in the eight-team northern division with a 15-25 record in the second half.

Rob Vaughn: A 30th-round selection by the Chicago White Sox, Vaughn played in just one game for the Bristol Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League, but recorded his first professional home run, a second-inning solo shot against Greenville on Sunday... In 16 games this season, the Humble, Texas, product is hitting .216 (11-for-51) with one double, one home run and two RBI... Bristol is fifth in the west division with a 16-25 mark.

Other K-State Pros
Adam Cowart: Cowart, who was an American Association Independent League All-Star, bounced back from a 0-2 mark the week prior by winning his only start last week on Friday at Sioux City... The right-hander tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits with a walk and three strikeouts to guide the Wingnuts to a 7-2 victory... In 14 appearances this season, which includes 13 starts, Cowart is 6-5 with a 2.89 ERA, which is tops amongst Wichita starters... In 81.0 innings, Cowart has allowed 26 earned runs, walked 16 batters and struck out 32, while opponents are hitting .244 against him... Cowart is tied for first in the American Association with three complete games, while he is fourth in ERA... Wichita, which won the first half division title, is third in the north division with a 14-15 second-half record, 3.5 games back of Lincoln.

Eric Eymann: A second baseman in the Cincinnati Reds organization, Eymann went 2-for-13 (.154) with three runs scored in five games last week for Triple A Louisville... Eymann began the week with a by going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and run scored on Monday against Charlotte... He also had a hit and scored another run at Rochester on Sunday... In 19 games this season in Triple A, Eymann is hitting .194 (12-for-62), while he has tallied four doubles, one triple, five RBI and nine runs scored... The Bats continue to lead the International League West Division with a 65-49 mark, 8.5 games above Indianapolis... Prior to his promotion to Triple A, Eymann played 69 games this season for the Carolina Mudcats of the Southern League (Double A)... A 19th-round draft pick by Cincinnati in 2005, Eymann was hitting .233 with nine doubles, one homer and 20 RBI before being reassigned to Triple A.

Jared Goedert: Hampered by injuries for most of the season, Goedert, a 2006 draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, went 2-for-12 (.167) in four games last week for the Akron Aeros of the Eastern League (Double A)... After going 0-for-4 in a pair of games against Connecticut, Goedert came back on Friday with a 2-for-4 night, recording a pair of doubles and a run scored... In 74 games this season Goedert is hitting .231 (59-for-255) with 17 doubles, one triple, four homers and 28 RBI... Akron extended its division lead to eight games with a 71-44 record.

Ben Hornbeck: Hornbeck, a starter turned reliever in the middle of the season, earned his first save of the season in his only relief appearance last week for the Stockton Ports of the Class A Advanced California League... The left-hander threw 3.0 hitless innings with two walks and four strikeouts to save the game against Inland Empire on Saturday... This season in High A, Hornbeck, who has pitched at three different levels in the A's minor-league system this season, is 4-3 with a 4.10 ERA... The Phoenix, Ariz., product has allowed 27 earned runs in 59.1 innings, while he has walked 24 batters as opposed to his 83 strikeouts... Hornbeck is tied for 25th in the California League in strikeouts, while he would be 11th in ERA and tied for 14th in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched) if he had pitched the required minimum of innings... Stockton owns a 27-17 second-half record, 5.0 games back of San Jose in the north division.

Trevor Hurley: Hurley, a 2008 selection by the Texas Rangers, earned the win in his only start last week for the Spokane Indians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League... After two-straight no decisions, the Tomball, Texas, product threw 6.0 scoreless innings, scattering five hits with two walks and three strikeouts at Salem-Keizer on Wednesday... He was also able to force former Wildcat teammate and the Northwest League's top hitter, Drew Biery, to fly out twice... Hurley, who has also pitched in Low A this season, is 2-2 with a 4.30 ERA in nine starts in short-season, while he has allowed 17 walks and struck out 45 batters in 46.0 innings... Hurley is fifth in the Northwest League in strikeouts, 12th in innings pitched and 13th in ERA and 16th WHIP (1.48)... Spokane moved into second place in the east division with a 22-27 record.

Steve Murphy: Murphy, who was put on the disabled list in early July by Triple A Oklahoma City, continued to struggle in seven games last week for the Frisco RoughRiders of the Texas League (Double A) as he went 3-for-23 (.130)... On Wednesday at Midland, Murphy went 1-for-4 with a first-inning RBI single... He also went 1-for-4 with a solo homer on Friday and 1-for-3 with one RBI on Saturday against San Antonio... In Double A, Murphy is hitting .206 (34-for-165) in 49 games with 10 doubles, one triple, seven homers and 27 RBI... Frisco is 2.0 games out of first in the south division with a 23-20 second-half record... A 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Murphy played in 36 games for Oklahoma City before being placed on the DL and sent down to Double A... In 33 games this season in Triple A, Murphy is hitting .231 (24-for-104) with three doubles, two triples, two homers and 10 RBI... Oklahoma City is an even 57-57 this season, 5.0 games back of Albuquerque in the Pacific Coast League American South Division.

Justin Murray: A starter for Kansas State who has been turned into a closer in the professional ranks, Murray, a 2008 draft pick by the Oakland A's, made three appearances last week for the Kane County Cougars of the Class A Midwest League... On Monday at Wisconsin, Murray pitched one inning, allowing one hit with a pair of strikeouts in a 5-1 Cougar win... The right-hander came back a day later and recorded the same line at Monday, but also tallied his 10th save of the season... He ended the week by allowing three earned runs on three hits against Clinton on Saturday... In 28 appearances for the Cougars this season, Murray is 3-1 with a 3.06 ERA and 10 saves... The right-hander has allowed 11 earned runs on 35 hits with eight walks and 36 strikeouts in 32.1 innings... His 10 saves are tied for 10th in the Midwest League... Kane County, which won the first-half division title, is fifth in the western division in the second half with a 20-23 record.

Eli Rumler: Rumler, a 2007 draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks who saw time in Double A earlier this season, was 3-for-12 (.250) with a double and two RBI in four games last week for the Visalia Rawhide of the Class A Advanced California League... The second baseman went 2-for-3 with a double at San Jose on Tuesday before hitting a solo homer at the SJ Giants on Thursday... He rounded out his week with a sacrifice fly against Modesto on Saturday... In 67 games this season in High A, Rumler is hitting .202 (49-for-242) with nine doubles, three homers and 15 RBI... The Little River, Kan., product was 2-for-21 with a run scored, a double and four RBI in eight games for Double A Mobile... Visalia, which went 3-3 last week, is 16-28 in the second half.

Nate Tenbrink: A 2008 draft pick by the Seattle Mariners, Tenbrink has hit safely in nine of the last 10 games, including all five contests last week as he went 7-for-20 (.350) with a double, a triple and two RBI for the Clinton LumberKings of the Class A Midwest League... The first baseman went 1-for-4 with a RBI against Burlington on Monday... Four days later, Tenbrink tallied a 3-for-4 contest with a triple against Kane County before another 1-for-4 contest on Sunday with a RBI double... In 101 games this season, Tenbrink is hitting .290 (107-for-369) with 20 doubles, six triples, eight home runs and 50 RBI... He is tied for ninth in the Midwest League in triples, tied for 11th in runs scored (63), 12th in total bases (163), tied for 13th in hits, tied for 14th in OPS (.807), 15th in average and tied for 16th in on-base percentage (.365)... Clinton is third in the Midwest League in the second half with a 21-21 mark, 4.0 games back of Peoria for first.

Carlos Torres: Torres, who became the first Wildcat to play in a major-league game in nine years on July 22 when he was called up by the White Sox, made is second-career major league start on Saturday for the White Sox... However, Torres' second start wasn't as sharp as the first as he allowed four earned runs on three hits with six walks and five strikeouts... Torres was able to avoid the loss, however, as the Sox rallied and won, 8-5... Torres remained on the active roster as the White Sox begin a six-game west coast road trip... In two starts this season for Chicago, Torres holds a 6.75 ERA with two no decisions... In 9.1 innings pitched, the right-hander has allowed seven earned runs on nine hits with nine walks and eight strikeouts... The White Sox are 3.0 games back of Detroit in the American League Central Division with a 57-55 record... Torres has been dominate for Triple A Charlotte in 19 games this season, which includes 18 starts, as he holds a 9-4 record with one save and a 2.21 ERA, which is tops in the International League... In 110.0 innings pitched, the right-hander has allowed 27 earned runs on 79 hits with 45 walks and 110 strikeouts... Torres is tied for second in the International League in complete games (2) and shutouts (1), third in strikeouts, tied for third in wins and tied for fourth in WHIP (1.13)... Charlotte is fourth in the International League South Division with a 52-62 record.

Byron Wiley: A 2008 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Wiley extended his hitting streak to 14 games, but went hitless in the second game of the week for the Dayton Dragons of the Class A Midwest League... Nevertheless, the outfielder went 7-for-25 (.280) in seven games last week with a double and a RBI... Wiley went 1-for-5 with a RBI double against Great Lakes on Monday... He then went 2-for-4 with a run scored against the Loons on Thursday before another two-hit game with two runs scored at Lansing on Friday... Wiley's average remained steady at .279 (84-for-301) from last week... In 86 games this season, Wiley has tallied 20 doubles, five triples, 11 homers and 55 RBI... Wiley is third in the Midwest League in slugging percentage (.488) and OPS (.885), fourth in walks (60), tied for fourth in on-base percentage (.397), tied for 13th in homers and tied for 15th in triples and RBI... Dayton moved up to fourth place in the eastern division with a 21-21 second-half record.
