K-State Summer Baseball Update: August 11

MANHATTAN, Kan. Each Monday, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.


Coastal Plain League

Sophomores-to-be Carter Jurica and Jason King and the Fayetteville (N.C.) Swap Dogs concluded their season on Monday with a 27-29 record... Jurica finished second on the team in average at .263 (47-for-179) with six doubles, one triple, one home run and 22 RBI... The infielder also held a .933 fielding percentage and was 16-for-19 in stolen base attempts... King finished two points behind Jurica at .261 (42-for-161) with eight doubles, two triples, one home run and 14 RBI... Playing infield for the majority of the season, King finished with a .915 fielding percentage... The Swap Dogs finished the season fourth in the south division.


Jayhawk Baseball League

Pitcher Thomas Rooke and catcher Daniel Dellasega each spent part of the summer playing for the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons... Rooke held a 0-1 record and a 7.20 ERA in seven appearances, including four starts, but did not pitch the final month of the season... Final statistics for the Griffins are not available, but, as of July 19, Dellasega was hitting .291 with three doubles, one triple, one home run and six RBI... Nevada won its first game of the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series, defeating the Casa Grande (Calif.) Cotton Kings, 14-1, on Monday, but fell to the Beatrice (Neb.) Bruins, 4-1, on Friday... Nevada then lost to the Havasu (Ariz.) Heat in the losers’ bracket, 3-2, on Sunday, ending its season... Senior-to-be Jordan Cruz joined the Derby Twins midway through the summer after recovering from an injury sustained during K-State’s season... Final statistics for the Twins are not available... As of July 27, Cruz was hitting .292 (14-for-48) with four doubles, five home runs and 14 RBI... Derby was dropped in its opening-round game of the NBC World Series on Tuesday by the Conejo (Calif.) Oaks, 4-3... In its first game in the loser’s bracket, the Twins defeated the San Diego Stars, 5-1, on Thursday, but lost to the Havasu (Ariz.) Heat, 2-0, on Friday... Cruz hit .222 (2-for-9) in the World Series with one triple and three RBI.

Collegiate League

Justin Bloxom and the McKinney Marshalls, who finished first in the regular season, defeated the Coppell Copperheads to claim the 2008 TCL Championship on Saturday... Bloxom went 2-for-5 with three RBI, including the game-winning RBI in the top of the ninth... Bloxom finished the season with a .243 average with four doubles, six home runs and 21 RBI... He tied for first in the league in home runs and finished 11th in RBI.


West Coast Collegiate Baseball League

WCCBL All-Stars Dane Yelovich and A.J. Morris finished the summer on Sunday for the 13-29 Moses Lake Pirates ... Yelovich went 3-for-12 with two run scored and two stolen bases during the final week of the season... The outfielder finished the year with a .257 average which was second on the team with six doubles, 17 RBI and was 23-for-32 in stolen base attempts, which led the league ... Morris threw one game last week, starting and taking the loss on Thursday against Wenatchee...The right hander pitched 8.0 innings, allowing three runs only one of which was earned and also recorded seven strikeouts... He finished the season 1-3 with one save, a 3.21 ERA and 57 strikeouts... His ERA ranked 16th in the WCCBL, while his 57 strikeouts were tops in the league... Furthermore, he held opponents to a .203 average, which ranked fourth.

Central Plains Baseball League

Future seniors Lance Hoge (pitcher) and Rob Vaughn (catcher), junior Adam Muenster (infielder), sophomore Justin Lindsey (pitcher) and incoming freshman Nick Martini (outfielder) are playing for the Junction City Generals, which stayed alive in the National Baseball Congress (NBC) double-elimination World Series after a 4-3 victory over the Conejo (CA) Oaks on Sunday... Playing in the losers’ bracket after dropping its opening game, the Generals take on the Maxim (Calif.) Yankees on Monday... Martini leads the Generals in hitting during the World Series at .385 (5-for-13) with one double... Vaughn is hitting .250 (3-for-12) with one double and one RBI... In two appearances, Hoge is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 16.0 innings... He also has a 9-0 strikeout-to-walk ratio.


M.I.N.K. League

Drew Biery and the Topeka Golden Giants were eliminated from the NBC Midwest Regional to end the season... Finals statistics are not available.


Walter Johnson Baseball League

Matt Giller, who redshirted the 2008 season, played for the Salina Blue Jays, who finished the summer 4-20... Final statistics are not available.


2008 Draft Picks

Ben Hornbeck: Ben Hornbeck, a 32nd-round pick by the Oakland Athletics, saw action in another two games last week...  The lefty, pitching for the Vancouver Canadians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, gave up one run on two hits while striking out three batters at Spokane on Wednesday... He came back to pitch 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and two walks on Friday at Spokane... Hornbeck is 2-1 with one save and a 4.31 ERA in 24.0 innings this season... The Canadians are 22-31 and sit in fourth place in the west division.


Trevor Hurley: Playing for the Spokane Indians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, Trevor Hurley pitched 4.0 scoreless inning last week in two appearances... A 26th-round pick by the Texas Rangers, Hurley allowed two hits and struck out one in 2.0 innings against Tri-City on Tuesday before throwing 2.0 hitless innings and striking out five against Vancouver on Friday... On the season, Hurley is 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA in 26.2 innings... Spokane continues to lead the east division with a 37-16 record, six games ahead of second-place Boise.


Justin Murray: Justin Murray signed with the Oakland Athletics two week ago and was assigned to the organization’s Rookie Arizona League... A 29th-round draft pick by the A’s in June’s draft, Murray made his first start on Wednesday against the AZL Angles... In 5.0 innings pitched, the righty allowed just one run on three hits, but was saddled with the loss... Murray is now 0-1 in two appearances with a 2.35 ERA in 7.2 innings... The AZL Athletics are 5-7 in the second half of the season.


Nate Tenbrink: Nate Tenbrink, who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the seventh round, struggled last week as he went 0-for-17 with one RBI, five runs scored and three stolen base for the Everett Aqua Sox in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League... The third baseman drove in his lone RBI of the week on a sacrifice fly against Tri-City on Thursday... In 50 games, Tenbrink is hitting .200 with six doubles, five home runs, 20 RBI and is 23-for-27 in stolen base attempts... He is currently tied for seventh in the league in home runs and is first in stolen bases with 23, five steals better than second place... Everett moved into third place in the west division with a 24-29 record.


Byron Wiley: Byron Wiley, a 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds, continues to raise his average for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League... The outfielder recorded a 7-for-12 week with three doubles, one home run, four RBI and five runs scored... Against Idaho Falls on Friday, Wiley went 3-for-3 with one double, one home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 9-1 victory...  Wiley’s season average jumped 37 points from last week to .330, while he has recorded 10 doubles, five triples, four home runs and 24 RBI on the season... Billings won the first half of the Pioneer Rookie League North Division is 11-2 to begin the second half.


Daniel Edwards (25th round, Philadelphia Phillies) has not signed.


Other K-State Pros

Adam Cowart: Playing for Double A Connecticut of the Eastern League, Adam Cowart appeared in two games last week... Against Trenton on Monday, the righty threw 3.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and striking out four... However, he allowed four runs on five hits against Portland on Saturday... A 2006 draft pick by San Francisco, Cowart has an 8-6 record and a 3.82 ERA in 125.0 innings... He also has 62 strikeouts this season, while issuing 24 walks... He is tied for 12th in the Eastern League in wins, 14th in ERA and tied for 19th in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched)... The Defenders are in fourth place in the northern division at 61-60.


Eric Eymann: A 2005 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Eric Eymann was 5-for-22 with one home run, three RBI and four runs scored last week for Double A Chattanooga... His best game of the week came on Tuesday at Birmingham as he went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI and three runs scored... A starter in the 2008 Southern League All-Star Game, Eymann is batting .296 on the season with 25 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 58 RBI... He is 19th in the Southern League in hits, 17th in doubles, and tied for 16th in RBI... The Lookouts are in fifth place in the north division at 21-29 during the second half of the season.


Jared Goedert: Jared Goedert, playing for the Kinston Indians in the Class A Advanced Carolina League, raised his average after he went 9-for-23 with one double, one home run, six RBI and seven runs scored... The third baseman has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, including a 2-for-3 effort against Salem on Thursday with one double, three RBI and two runs scored... Goedert raised his average to .267 with 21 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 65 RBI and 67 runs scored... He is 11th in the league in hits, tied for seventh in runs scored and 10th in RBI... Kinston is in second place in the southern division during the second half with a 29-20 record.


Steve Murphy: Playing for Double A Frisco in the Texas League, Steve Murphy went 7-for-25 last week with one double, one triple, one home run, two RBI and six runs scored... A 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Murphy recorded three-straight two-hit games at San Antonio on Monday and at Tulsa on Wednesday and Thursday... A starter for the south division in the Texas League All-Star Game, Murphy is hitting .271 with 32 doubles, eight triples, 18 home runs and 77 RBI... The outfielder is tied for 11th in the league in hits, tied for first in doubles, tied for first in triples, tied for seventh in home runs and tied for fifth in RBI... The RoughRiders lead the south division during the second half with a 29-20 record after winning the first half of the season.


Eli Rumler: A 2007 draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Eli Rumler went 4-for-17 during the week with two RBI and one run scored... Playing for Class A South Bend in the Midwest League, Rumler’s average sits at .226 with 15 doubles, three home runs and 27 RBI... South Bend has held on to the eastern division lead with a 30-19 second-half record, two games ahead of Lansing.


Carlos Torres: Carlos Torres a 2004 draft pick by the Chicago White Sox, has now seen action in seven games for Triple A Charlotte, including two relief appearances last week... Torres, who was called back up from Double A Birmingham on July 28, allowed one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out two at Syracuse on Wednesday... On Saturday, the right-handed pitcher threw one scoreless inning, recording one walk and one strikeout at Pawtucket... Combined with Double A and Triple A, Torres holds a 9-5 record with a 3.33 ERA in 119.1 innings... The Knights are in third place in the International League South Division at 55-68... Prior to his promotion two weeks ago, Torres was outstanding at Double A as he held a 9-5 with a 3.20 ERA... He also struck out 92 while walking just 29... Despite spending four weeks this season in Triple A, Torres is still tied for third in the Southern League (Double A) in wins, third in ERA and 14th in strikeouts... A 2008 Southern League All-Star, Torres also leads the league in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched) at 1.13.
