K-State Summer Baseball Update: August 17
MANHATTAN, Kan. - As summer collegiate play came to an end on Saturday and the minor league season enters the final stretch of the season, k-statesports.com takes one final look at current and former Wildcats on the summer circuit.
El Dorado Broncos
The El Dorado Broncos, led by sophomores Matt Giller, Justin Lindsey and Cameron Welch, completed their championship season by taking home the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series crown... The Broncos did so by winning three games last week to earn a berth into the championship game against the Alaska Glacier Pilots... El Dorado defeated the Santa Barbara Foresters on Monday, 4-3, as Giller went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly... Two days later, the Broncos topped Liberal by the same 4-3 score, setting up a matchup with Hays for the right to play in the championship game... The Broncos rode Lindsey's right arm as he tossed 8.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout, while Giller went 1-for-3 with a double, propelling El Dorado to a 5-2 victory... Saturday's championship game against the Glacier Pilots was tied at one in the bottom of the 11th when a sacrifice fly drove in the winning run, giving the Broncos their fifth NBC World Series championship.
Alaska Glacier Pilots
Senior Daniel Dellasega and the Alaska Glacier Pilots were forced to fight back through the loser's bracket to make a championship appearance as they faced elimination every day last week and were victorious in all five elimination games, thanks in part to Dellasega... The Glacier Pilots defeated Clarinda, 11-0, on Monday, Seattle, 13-3, on Tuesday, Valley Center, 9-0, on Wednesday, Conejo, 7-3, on Thursday and Liberal, 13-4, on Friday before dropping the championship game on Saturday... Along the way, Dellasega went 8-for-16 with a double, a homer and seven RBI... The catcher went 3-for-4 with a RBI double on Tuesday and 1-for-2 with a three-run home run on Friday to send the Glacier Pilots to the championship game.
2009 Draft Picks
Drew Biery: Coming off an injury the week prior, Biery, a 22nd-round draft pick by San Francisco, was 5-for-16 (.313) with two doubles, two home runs and four RBI for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League... The third baseman was 1-for-3 with a double on Thursday at Spokane before going 1-for-4 with another double on Saturday against the Indians... Biery broke out with a 2-for-4 day on Sunday against Everett as he belted a pair of two-run homers over the left-field wall... In 44 games this season, the Arlington, Texas, native is hitting .358 (59-for-165) with 12 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 39 RBI... Biery continues to leads the Northwest League in average as he is 16 points better than Ryan Wheeler, who is second... Biery is also second in OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage; .976), tied for second in RBI, third in slugging percentage (.552), fourth in on-base percentage (.425), tied for seventh in hits, tied for eighth in runs scored (36) and total bases (91), tied for ninth in doubles and tied for 12th in homers... The Volcanoes continue to lead the west division with a Northwest League-best 36-20 record... Biery and the Volcanoes conclude regular-season play on Sept. 6, while the Northwest League championship is held Sept. 7-11.
Justin Bloxom: Bloxom, an 11th-round draft pick by the Washington Nationals, carried a six-game hitting streak deep into the week as the designated hitter went 6-for-19 (.316) with a double and two RBI in six games for the Vermont Lake Monsters of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League... Bloxom tallied at least one hit in each game beginning on Tuesday, until going hitless on Sunday... The Phoenix, Ariz., product was 1-for-3 with a double on Tuesday at Batavia, while he was 2-for-3 with two RBI against the Muckdogs on Wednesday... Bloxom raised his average 11 points last week as he is now hitting .226 (38-for-168) in 49 games this season with three doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI... Bloxom has also recorded 29 walks, which is tied for sixth in the league... Vermont remained in third place in the Stedler Division for the third-straight week, as the Lake Monsters have compiled a 26-30 record... The New-York Penn League regular season concludes on Sept. 6, while the playoffs run Sept. 8-14.
Jordan Cruz: An undrafted free-agent acquisition by the Detroit Tigers, Cruz struggled last week as he had just one hit in five games for the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Tigers... His highlight of the week was a 1-for-4 contest against the GCL Yankees on Tuesday with a two-run triple... In 44 games this season, Cruz is hitting .264 (39-for-148) with 14 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 27 RBI and 25 runs scored... Cruz, a native of Hutchinson, Kan., is second in the Gulf Coast League in slugging percentage (.520), tied for third in home runs and OPS (.890), tied for fourth in doubles and total bases (77), tied for fifth in RBI, walks (22) and runs scored, tied for eighth in triples, tied for 13th in on-base percentage (.370) and tied for 15th in hits... The GCL Tigers are sixth in the north division at 20-27... The GCL regular season concludes on Aug. 31, while the four-team playoff begins on Sept. 1.
Lance Hoge: Hoge, a 39th-round draft pick by the New York Mets who had a quality relief appearance the week prior for the Savannah Sand Gnats of the Class A South Atlantic League, did not fare as well in his only appearance last week... The left-hander allowed two earned runs on three hits in 2.0 innings, but did strike out two batters... Hoge, who was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA for the Brooklyn Cyclones of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League prior to his July 26 promotion, is 0-2 for the Sand Gnats with a 4.50 ERA, allowing eight earned runs on 21 hits in 16.0 innings... The Stilwell, Kan., native has not allowed a walk as opposed to his 13 strikeouts... Savannah is sixth in the eight-team South Atlantic League Southern Division with a 21-25 second-half record... The South Atlantic League regular season comes to a close on Sept. 7, while the playoffs will be conducted Sept. 9-19.
A.J. Morris: Following two quality outings that ended in no decisions, Morris, a fourth-round pick by Washington, took his second loss in Low A this season on Saturday against Augusta as he surrendered four earned runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings... In four starts this season for Hagerstown, Morris is 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA, allowing nine earned runs on 22 hits with four walks and 15 strikeouts in 19.0 innings of work... In two predetermined starts earlier this season for the GCL Nationals, Morris tossed 5.0 hitless innings with four strikeouts... Hagerstown is seventh in the eight-team northern division with a 16-31 record in the second half.
Rob Vaughn: Seeing his most extensive week of action last week, Vaughn, a 30th-round selection by the Chicago White Sox, went 8-for-20 (.400) with three home runs and five RBI in five games for the Bristol Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League... On Wednesday at Johnson County, the catcher was 2-for-4 with a solo home run... Vaughn kept his momentum going against Elizabethtown as he went 3-for-4 on both Thursday and Friday, while Friday's contest saw the Humble, Texas, native belt two homers and drive in three runs... Vaughn raised his average 52 points with the stellar week as he is now hitting .268 (19-for-71) in 21 games with one double, four home runs and seven RBI... His four home runs are tied for 21st in the Appalachian League, while he would be 19th in on-base percentage (.451) if he had the required minimum of at-bats... Bristol is fifth in the west division with a 20-31 mark... The Appalachian League regular season runs until Sept. 1, while the playoffs are held Sept. 2-4.

Adam Cowart: Cowart, the ace of the Wichita Wingnut staff, did not make an appearance last week... The American Association All-Star is 6-5 with a 2.89 ERA in 14 appearances, which includes 13 starts... In 81.0 innings, Cowart has allowed 26 earned runs, walked 16 batters and struck out 32, while opponents are hitting .244 against him... Cowart is tied for first in the American Association with three complete games, while he is fourth in ERA... Wichita, which won the first half division title, is third in the north division with an 18-18 second-half record... The American Association regular season closes on Aug. 30, while the playoffs will be held Aug. 31-Sept. 13.
Eric Eymann: Eymann, a second baseman in the Cincinnati Reds organization, continues to battle for Triple A Louisville as he went 2-for-11 (.182) in six games last week for the Bats... Eymann was a defensive substitution on Monday and Wednesday at Lehigh Valley, while he was a pinch hitter against the IronPigs on Tuesday and Thursday... Eymann then started on Friday against Toledo, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored... In 25 games this season in Triple A, Eymann is hitting .192 (14-for-73), while he has tallied four doubles, two triples, five RBI and 10 runs scored... The Bats are running away with the International League West Division title at 70-51, 10 games ahead of Indianapolis... The regular season for the International League ends on Sept. 7, while the playoffs are held Sept. 9-19... Prior to Eymann's promotion to Triple A, the Omaha, Neb., product played 69 games for the Carolina Mudcats of the Southern League (Double A)... A 19th-round draft pick by Cincinnati in 2005, Eymann hit .233 with nine doubles, one homer and 20 RBI before being reassigned to Triple A.
Jared Goedert: Hampered by injuries for most of the season, Goedert, a 2006 draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, was able to play in four games last week and ended the week on a three-game hitting streak... The third baseman went 4-for-14 (.286) last week for the Akron Aeros of the Eastern League (Double A)... At Connecticut on Wednesday, Goedert went 2-for-3 with a RBI double and a two-run homer, propelling the Aeros to a 7-4 victory... He then went 1-for-3 each of his next two games - at Connecticut on Thursday and New Britain on Saturday... In 78 games this season, Goedert is hitting .237 (63-for-266) with 18 doubles, one triple, five homers and 31 RBI... Akron leads the southern division by 8.5 games over Reading with a 74-47 record... The Eastern League regular season concludes on Sept. 7, while the league will conduct its playoffs Sept. 9-20.
Ben Hornbeck: A starter turned reliever, Hornbeck, was solid in a pair of relief appearances last week for the Stockton Ports of the Class A Advanced California League... On Tuesday at Visaila, the left-hander tossed two hitless innings with two walks and three strikeouts in an 11-2 Port win... He came back on Sunday at San Jose to throw 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts... This season in High A, Hornbeck, who has pitched at three different levels in the A's minor-league system this season, is 4-3 with a 3.80 ERA... The Phoenix, Ariz., product has allowed 27 earned runs in 64.0 innings, while he has walked 26 batters as opposed to his 89 strikeouts... Hornbeck is tied for 21st in the California League in strikeouts, while he would be second in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched; 1.09) and seventh in ERA if he had pitched the required minimum of innings... Stockton owns a 29-21 second-half record, 6.0 games back of San Jose in the north division... The California League regular season concludes on Sept. 7, while the playoffs are held Sept. 9-21.
Trevor Hurley: A 2008 selection by the Texas Rangers, Hurley was victorious in a pair of starts last week for the Spokane Indians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League... After two-straight no decisions, the Tomball, Texas, has won each of his last three starts... At Tri-City on Monday, Hurley allowed just one hit with a walk and five strikeouts in 6.0 innings as the Indians won, 2-0... The right-hander came back to allow a pair of runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5.0 innings on Saturday against Salem-Keizer... Hurley, who has also pitched in Low A this season, is 4-2 with a 3.79 ERA in 11 starts in short-season, while he has allowed 21 walks and struck out 55 batters in 57.0 innings... Hurley is tied for third in the Northwest League in wins, fourth in strikeouts, sixth in innings pitched, 10th in ERA and tied for 14th WHIP (1.35)... Spokane is second in the east division with a 26-29 record.
Steve Murphy: Murphy, who was put on the disabled list in early July by Triple A Oklahoma City, went 4-for-25 (.160) in five games last week for the Frisco RoughRiders of the Texas League (Double A)... On Friday at Tulsa, Murphy went 2-for-6 with a sixth-inning RBI single... He also went 1-for-5 with a RBI double on Saturday at Northwest Arkansas... In Double A this season, Murphy is hitting .200 (38-for-190) in 54 games with 11 doubles, one triple, seven homers and 29 RBI... Frisco is 3.0 games out of first in the south division with a 26-23 second-half record... The Texas League regular season wraps up on Sept. 7, while the playoffs are held Sept. 9-19... A 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Murphy played 36 games for Oklahoma City before being placed on the DL and sent down to Double A... In 33 games in Triple A, Murphy hit .231 (24-for-104) with three doubles, two triples, two homers and 10 RBI.
Justin Murray: Murray, who started for K-State but has been turned into a closer in the professional ranks, made two appearances last week as the closer for the Kane County Cougars of the Class A Midwest League... On Monday against Clinton, Murray, a 2008 draft pick by the Oakland A's, recorded a one-inning save, allowing one hit and striking out two... He also pitched two innings on Thursday against Quad Cities, allowing one hit with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings in a game the Cougars won in 15 innings... In 30 appearances for the Cougars this season, Murray is 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA and 11 saves... The right-hander has allowed 11 earned runs on 37 hits with eight walks and 40 strikeouts in 35.1 innings... His 11 saves are tied for eighth in the Midwest League... Kane County, which won the first-half division title, is fifth in the western division in the second half with a 23-27 record... The regular season for the Midwest League concludes on Sept. 7, while the playoffs will be held Sept. 9-19.
Eli Rumler: Rumler, a 2007 draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks who saw time in Double A earlier this season, tallied one hit in just three games last week for the Visalia Rawhide of the Class A Advanced California League... The second baseman's only hit of the week came on Friday at Modesto as he went 1-for-4 with a run scored... In 70 games this season in High A, Rumler is hitting .197 (50-for-254) with nine doubles, three homers and 15 RBI... The Little River, Kan., product was 2-for-21 with a run scored, a double and four RBI in eight games for Double A Mobile... Visalia is 18-32 in the second half.
Nate Tenbrink: Tenbrink, a 2008 draft pick by the Seattle Mariners, went 6-for-27 (.222) in seven games last week for the Clinton LumberKings of the Class A Midwest League... The first baseman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored on Monday at Kane County, while he went 2-for-4 with a double at Beloit on Thursday... In 108 games this season, Tenbrink is hitting .285 (113-for-396) with 21 doubles, six triples, eight home runs and 50 RBI... He is tied for ninth in the Midwest League in triples, tied for 10th in runs scored (68), tied for 14th in hits, 16th in total bases (170) and tied for 18th in average... Clinton is third in the western division in the second half with a 23-26 mark, 6.0 games back of Peoria for first.
Carlos Torres: Torres, who made his second MLB start for the White Sox the week prior, came out of the bullpen for the second time this season for Triple A Charlotte on Thursday as he came on in relief of Jake Peavy, who was making a rehab start... Torres allowed three earned runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts as he was able to take the win, his 10th of the season... Torres has been dominate for Triple A Charlotte in 20 games this season, which includes 19 starts, as he holds a 10-4 record with one save and a 2.37 ERA... In 114.0 innings pitched, the right-hander has allowed 30 earned runs on 84 hits with 47 walks and 114 strikeouts... Torres is tied for second in the International League in complete games (3) and shutouts (1), third in ERA and strikeouts, tied for third in wins, tied for fourth in WHIP (1.15) and 20th in innings pitched... In two starts this season for Chicago, Torres holds a 6.75 ERA with two no decisions... In 9.1 innings pitched for the White Sox, the right-hander has allowed seven earned runs on nine hits with nine walks and eight strikeouts... Charlotte is fourth in the International League South Division with a 56-65 record.
Byron Wiley: A 2008 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Wiley hit safely in five of his six games played last week for the Dayton Dragons of the Class A Midwest League... The right fielder went 6-for-22 (.273) with one double, a homer and three RBI... On Tuesday against West Michigan, Wiley was 1-for-3 with a fifth-inning RBI single... He then went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored against the Whitecaps on Wednesday before hitting a two-run homer on Friday... For the second-straight week, Wiley's average remained steady at .279 (90-for-323)... In 92 games this season, Wiley has tallied 21 doubles, five triples, 12 homers and 58 RBI... Wiley is third in the Midwest League in walks (67), fourth in on-base percentage (.401) and OPS (.887), fifth in slugging percentage (.486), tied for 14th in homers, tied for 16th in triples and tied for 18th RBI... Dayton is fifth in the eastern division with a 23-26 second-half record.
