Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head coach Bruce Weber
Opening statement…
“Tubby (Smith) gets his guys to play hard. He obviously challenged his starters. They got their butts kicked at Kansas on Saturday. He went and started all the young guys. I thought our guys jumped on them pretty well from the start. We had a nice comfortable lead. Ironically like the game last year, if you go back we had a nice 14 point lead. We let them make a run before half. We came out putzed around, missed some layups, did some things, and they put some pressure on us. They just kept coming after us. We had to have some mature play down the stretch, take care of the ball, and we got it to Thomas (Gipson). I think that was a big hoop. We made free throws and just enough stops when it counted. I told them it was a maturity game and trying to come back after a really good win against Oklahoma on the road. Then we had to earn the victory. The last thing I put on the board was rebounding. It was not very good. It kept them in the game. I think our defense has been very good. The last stretch going back to Savannah State, even Texas Southern losing and losing to Georgia they got 52. That was more of our lack of offense and other reasons that we did not get wins. We know we have given ourselves a chance by guarding well. I think we are starting to get other guys to give us some additional minutes, like Justin (Edwards), and a little routine with who is going for whom. (Stephen) Hurt made a couple of big plays, with the big basket, a couple of free throws, and a good kick out to Marcus (Foster) for the three. If Thomas is not playing quite as well, as well as we hoped, or if he gets into foul trouble, we are starting to feel more confidence in him (Hurt) coming in and Justin (Edwards) coming in. Nigel (Johnson) did a nice job, a big bucket before the half. They had an 8-0 run so now you get that bucket and probably get the ball to start the second half. Now we have Baylor, and they beat us twice last year. The first game was a crazy game at their place. I thought we out played them for 38 or 39 minutes. The game here, they punked us. They were playing so well at the end of the year, but we had a nice lead here. They took it to us, and we did not guard them. We have got to guard them Saturday. They are beating Iowa State right now, so we know we are going to have a challenge here Saturday.”

On team defense …
“I think some of it is habits over the course of time, and some of it is drills over the course of time. Some of it is that we did not have guys at practice, for a big part of when you are building your foundation. I think Jevon (Thomas) is better on the defensive end especially away from the ball. I think Wes (Iwundu) has taken some pride in guarding. Justin is getting better habits as it is going. Nino (Williams) and Thomas, they have been through it and know what is going on. I thought they had some really nice post traps on the big guy. We got a couple of turnovers. The big thing today was protecting the paint. They hit some threes, when they got back into the game. Percentage wise, they get to the bucket, and we make them earn things from the parameter.”

Guard Marcus Foster
On his offensive performance…
“It was defiantly a sign of relief for me because I was taking to the basket and not getting anything. I had not hit a shot in a long time. So it was definitely something I was happy about that it went down.”

On maintaining lead…
“We cannot stay complacent. We have a 14 point lead. We need to extend that lead to 20 especially going into halftime that is how you put a team away. They came out and hit shots and that was able to bring them closer. We have to keep defending and put away teams. We cannot let them keep sticking around. That is how they get confidence, and they got confidence and they hit shots. We just have to keep grinding it out and that is what we did and that is how we won.”

On winning a grind it out game…
“I feel like almost all of our games are going to be like this in the Big 12 because every team is so good. This kind of win is going to help us down the road.”

Forward Wesley Iwundu
On K-State’s defense…
“Defense is our team. We strive on defense. It is defense first, and then we make plays off that. That is our identity, we want to lock teams down and then go from there.”

On his play…
“I think that is just natural to my game. Just bring a lot of things to the table. Helping the team out in any way I can to be successful. I think that is normal for me just showing what I can do all around.”

Texas Tech Head Coach Tubby Smith
Opening Statement…
“I thought we played hard tonight. We gave ourselves a chance there at the end. Kansas State did what they had to do to ice the game and put it away. We have had a tough time scoring, but we are playing good defense. We just need to manufacture more points and going with a smaller line-up has hurt us.”

On the teams fight…
“I thought we battled. We got down by about 12 or 14 in the first half, but we battled. I liked their energy level tonight, and we played with a lot more energy. We came in here and gave them a real battle. I thought this was a good opportunity for us to change the direction of things. We made a change in the line-up because I was playing the guys that I thought were most efficient at the time. When you get against a team on the road like K-State, you have got to have veteran, physical players, and I thought for the most part we competed, especially the guys off the bench. We just need to get some more scoring from a few guys, and I thought it would have been a different ball game.”

On Robert Turner…
“I thought he played better tonight. He did a good job, I thought tonight. Once again, we had some careless turnovers, but I thought overall he did a good job.”

Guard Robert Turner
On the second half…
“We just brought a little bit more effort and tried to grind it out. We just had more effort and just trying to get back to playing some basketball.”

On lessons learned from playing KU…
“Nobody wants to lose like that. We are a better team than we showed that day. We let a team bully us a little bit and that is not our style of basketball. That is not the team that we are.”

Guard Devaugntah Williams
On the end of the game…
“Just not concentrating and relaxing on defense at a pivotal moment when we needed the stop and they were capitalizing.”

On offensive rebounding…
“That was one of our keys to winning, crashing the glass. We had a good part with that.”
