K-State Quotes
Head Coach Frank Martin Quotes
On the team’s offensive production against the Baylor zone defense…
“I was really proud of the guys. They were as good and as comfortable as they needed to be. We have not played against a zone in a long time. Their (Baylor) style of basketball is completely different than Texas A&M, and with such a quick turnaround and a young team I was a little worried. At times we were a little lethargic. Our cuts were slow and we could not get the ball to the areas of the floor that we were talking about, but then in the second half we finally got some good hard cuts, we got the ball to the right spots and our guys stepped up and made some shots. It was not pretty but we did not just stand around and watch either. We got on the offensive glass. Me personally, I do not like zones defensively because if you play a team that gets on the glass you do not have a solid box-out and it makes it difficult to get rebounds at times. We needed to figure out a way to win and we did.”

On what the team did right tonight …
“We have been great in practice and I was really proud of the way that we played at Texas A&M, we just did not make shots. It was not our mental ability; it was not our discipline; we fought our tails off, but we just could not make shots. In the last four minutes, just like we did tonight, we had some offensive breakdowns that you cannot have. You cannot turn it over, you cannot make bad decisions. What saved us today and what basically got us the win was our free throws, some of you guys would have never believed that was going to happen.”

On the play of Jacob Pullen…
“I am doing a better job of coaching Jake. I am doing my job and if I do my job it allows him to play like he is capable of playing. He has been great here for about a 10-day period. If I would have gotten up and done my job better earlier in the year he probably would have been playing a lot better and we would have been that much better of a basketball team. I am doing a better job of coaching; I am doing a better job helping him. I am proud of him. He went out tonight and he was as disciplined as he has been all year with his assignments on both sides of the floor.”

On Jacob Pullen’s ability to lead and better the younger guards …
“Absolutely, I have to do a better job of coaching Jacob and I think I am doing that. I am giving him the ability to play better which helps those other guards. Like I told him, when he was a younger kid, Denis Clemente helped him become a better player and now he is helping those younger guards become better players and that is what it is all about.”

Senior Guard Jacob Pullen
On K-State’s defensive performance…
“We played with energy. We got to the ball, and we challenged every shot. That makes you feel like that is the type of defense that we have been playing the last few years.”

On guarding LaceDarius Dunn…
“I like to guard LaceDarius. It is a good challenge. He is one of the great scorers in Big 12 history. He does a great job manipulating people to get his shots. I tried to stay in his face because I have watched a lot of film on him. He is a great challenge, and he is one of the best players in the Big 12.”

On tonight’s victory…
“It was very important for us; for our locker room and staff because we have been working so hard. Not to look back, but we felt like that Texas A&M game was ours, and we gave it away. Tonight’s game was a must-win, and it gives us some momentum to build on going into Lawrence on Saturday.”

Freshman Guard Will Spradling
On tonight’s win…
“It was a big win. We are not doing too well in the Big 12, so tonight was a big confidence builder and that is what we needed.”

On fighting back…
“That was something that we did not have the last couple games. We had been in the games. The teams would punch us, and we would not punch back. So doing that was big for us tonight.”

On Jacob Pullen’s influence…
“The couple games where I was not playing too well, he told me what I needed to work on and where I could get better in practice. If I am not doing something right or am having problems, he is always pushing me and trying to make me better.”

On the overall play of the game…
“I feel like that is the best we have played together all year. We knew where each person was going to be. We shot the ball well, and we defended.”

Baylor Quotes
Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening statement…
“I have had some questions about K-State, and from a coaching standpoint one thing I can tell you is that I admire Coach (Frank) Martin and I will tell you why I admire him. There have been a lot of adjustments to their line-ups this season but for them to always compete and play hard, if you want to know where this program is at I remember doing media here before but I only saw some of you here, but now he is doing a great job with this program. This is a very tough place to play and is always going to be a physical game. I was proud of our defensive effort and I felt like we needed to do a better job on the boards. They are the best at rebounding and we know we had our hands full with it. At the end of the day they were better than us tonight. I know that it was a big game for them and a big game for us.”

On K-State’s defense…
“They are very good defensively. They take you out of what you normally do and it is tough to prepare for because they guard different than most teams that we face and it is really tough to have 24 hours to simulate that. I was proud of the way that we responded in the second half. We really shot the ball and played a lot better. I thought that Stargell Love did a great job playing a lot of minutes for us tonight in a tough environment.”

On physical nature of the game…
“I love when both teams are physical out there and at the same time they did a good job from the free-throw line and we needed to do better at the free-throw line. I thought it was a well officiated game and I thought that it was a competitive game.”

Guard LaceDarius Dunn
On Jacob Pullen’s defense…
“He is one of the best defenders in the Big 12. He did a good job. Whatever their plan was, he stepped up and was the leader of his team and doing his role. He was playing good defense, which he has been all year.”

Forward Quincy Acy
On flow of the game…
“We did a great job of executing and rebounding but I guess we let it slip away. We got out of what we do best. They stepped their play up and kept executing. We need to learn how to keep a lead and how to get back into a game.”
