Kansas State Quotes
Head Coach Frank Martin
On his team’s defensive performance tonight…
“It was good. We have been defending well. Obviously we did not play worth a you-know-what last time out (against KU), but we have been defending real well and it continued; now we have to learn how to sustain. We defended well, built a lead, but we came out in the second half and lost that attention to detail defensively, gave up back-to-back baskets on our mistakes, built the lead back up and then kind of relaxed again. That has got to stop. But we are defending half-way decent.”

On defensive preparation…
“That is what we try to do every day. Brad (Underwood) and Delonte (Hill) do an unbelievable job with details and scouting reports and part of our defensive strategy is to disrupt the offense. The players did a great job of paying attention to the things we spoke about and the things we had to do to find success defensively and they went out and executed. They prepared well against Kansas the game before but we did not do a very good job of going out and playing against KU. Today they did a better job of that.”

On Curtis Kelly’s game…
“You know Curt is alright. Curt’s biggest wrestling match is with himself. When he makes a mistake, he cannot let go of that mistake and then it affects his demeanor and his approach for a period of time and then that is when I engage with him, because he cannot do that. He is too good for one, and he is too important to our team to be wrapped up over a mistake. I tell him all the time there are people that make a zillion dollars a year that make mistakes, but the reason they make a zillion dollars a year is because as soon as they make that mistake it is over and they are on to the next play. That is what we need him to do that for our team. ”

Forward Curtis Kelly
On defensive play…
“I thought we played well. I thought that we played hard and with a lot of excitement. I think that our defense helped our offense out a lot.”

On bouncing back from loss against Kansas…
“The most important thing tonight was that we got a win. That is really what I care about. It was a good game for me to come back after the Kansas game. I kind of knew that I would bounce back, but I am not too much concerned about that. I am concerned about the wins. Now that we won I am concerned about the next game.”

Guard Jacob Pullen
On ability to cause turnovers…
“We knew that they (Nebraska) did not really like pressure and we knew that in order for us play well on offense we had to play well defensively. We could not give up easy baskets or easy shots like we did against Kansas. Just like last year our defense turned into offense and that is our best offense.”

On ability to keep a comfortable lead…
“I think that we paid very good attention to detail in the scouting report and understanding them as a team and the need to execute. We did not need to worry about quick shots or bad shots but just to move on to the next play. As a team we did a good job executing towards the end of the game.”

On team focus…
“It feels like that we are a team. It feels like we go through things together and whether it is good or bad we need to deal with it and move forward. Overall in our locker room our morale is continuing to get better and we believe in each other. At the same time every team has its problems.”

Nebraska Quotes
Head Coach Doc Sadler
Opening Statement…
“As I told the team after the game, I think that is the worst effort since the Oklahoma game in my first year at Nebraska. I did not think we competed in any area, and we darn sure did not compete hard enough to come in here and beat a team as good as Kansas State. If you are going to have a chance in this league, because the league is really balanced, it is going to come down to which team plays the hardest on that particular night and tonight it was not even close. Frank (Martin) had his team ready, and I did not. You can go through the stats and see it. We had 22 turnovers and you are not going to beat anybody turning the ball over that many times. All the effort areas that are played in a ball game, K-State won every one of them and that is why they were never really challenged in this game. I am disappointed, but we have to move on. We have a game on Saturday, so we have to come in tomorrow and Friday and practice hard to prepare for it.”

On preparation before the game…
“I did not have my team ready. Kansas State plays hard every game, and they defended the way we expected to, man-to-man. On offense we played sideways, and we did not go at the basket very well. When you play sideways against Kansas State, it is just a matter of time until they run you out of your offense and you turn the ball over, and that is what they did tonight.”

Guard Drake Beranek
On the team’s lack of effort …
“I think we had a lack of toughness tonight. They made all the effort plays; they took charges, they got offensive rebounds, and they got on the floor more than we did. It is not characteristic of us to come out and not exceed their effort. This is something we are going to turn around with the next few days in practice to get ready for Saturday.”

Forward Toney McCray
On tonight’s performance  …
“It was terrible for us from the get-go. It seemed like they were everywhere. Terrible is the only way I can describe it.”

On tonight’s loss…
“I cannot say that I saw it coming because we did everything that we normally do to prepare. From the jump ball, something just did not feel right.”
