Williams Named co-Big 12 Player of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Nino Williams earned Phillips 66 co-Big 12 Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after posting back-to-back 20-point games in helping K-State to a split of two games last week.

Williams, who shared the weekly honor with Baylor’s Rico Gathers, collects the distinction for the second time this season after winning it for the first time on Dec. 15, 2014. He is the seventh Wildcat in school history to earn the award at least twice in one season and the first since Rodney McGruder did it four times during the 2012-13 season. He is the second Wildcat this season to be named Big 12 Player of the Week after Marcus Foster won it on Jan. 12. Overall, it marks the school’s 24th Player of the Week honor since the inception of the Big 12 in 1997.

Williams averaged 21.0 points on 69.2 percent shooting (18-of-26) with 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in 31.5 minutes per game in helping the Wildcats to split of games with No. 9/12 Iowa State and Oklahoma State. He was also a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. He has four career 20-point games with three coming this season. He has now scored in double figures in 24 career games, including 11 of 18 games played this season.

Following a 16-point second half in a win over No. 22/23 Baylor on Jan. 17, Williams continued his torrid scoring pace at No. 9/12 Iowa State on Tuesday. He scored a career-best and game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 field goals with a team-high 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in 31 minutes, as the Wildcats fell late to the Cyclones, 77-71. He went a stellar 6-of-6 from the line to help the team post the 10th-best free throw percentage (93.8; 15-of-16) in school history and the highest since 2006.

Williams scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the first half, as K-State remained perfect at home in Big 12 play with a 63-53 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday. He went 10-of-13 from the field with a game-high 7 rebounds in 32 minutes. It marked the first time in his career he has posted back-to-back 20-point games.

Williams leads K-State in rebounding (5.1 rpg.) and free throw percentage (80.3), while he is second in scoring (12.0 ppg.), field goal percentage (53.9), field goals (83), 20-point games (3) and double-digit scoring games (11). He also ranks among the Big 12’s Top 15 in three categories, including second in field goal percentage, seventh in free throw percentage and 14th in scoring.

In the last three games, Williams is averaging 20.0 points on 67.6 percent shooting (25-of-37) and 7.3 rebounds in 29.3 minutes per game in leading the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding in each contest.
