Pair Named to Academic All-Big 12 Team

DALLAS, Texas Kansas State junior guards Buchi Awaji and Chris Merriewether were among 17 players named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball First Team as announced by the league office Friday.


A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Awaji is averaging 3.8 points on 46.7 percent shooting with 1.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 10.5 minutes per game.  He has appeared in 22 games.  Awaji scored a season-high 12 points against North Carolina Central on Feb. 17.  He is majoring in social science.


Merriewether, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., is averaging 0.9 points on 36.8 percent shooting with 1.3 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 8.8 minutes per game.  He has seen time in 28 of the team’s 30 games.  He scored a season-high five points against Texas Tech on Feb. 11.       


Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league men’s basketball team consisted of 17 first team members combined with 11 on the second team.  First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.


To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team’s scheduled contests.  Freshmen and transfer are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.  Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
