K-State to play Oregon in Hardwood Series

IRVING, Texas Kansas State will make a return trip to Oregon on Sunday, Dec. 7 in the second annual Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series, as the league office announced the pairings for the 2008 event Monday.

The two teams played a thrilling game in the first year of the Hardwood Series with the Ducks posting an 80-77 win in overtime over the Wildcats at Bramlage Coliseum before a national ESPN2 audience on Nov. 29, 2007.  With the score knotted at 76-all, sophomore Tajuan Porter gave Oregon the lead for good with a jumper with 2:34 remaining in the overtime period then hit 1-of-2 free throws with less than a minute remaining to clinch the victory.  Freshman Michael Beasley led all scorers with 24 points.

The schools proved to be among the best in the country with both advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2007-08.  Kansas State advanced to the “Big Dance” for the first time in nearly 12 years and captured its first NCAA Tournament win since 1988 with its 80-67 victory over USC in the first round of the Midwest Regional in Omaha, Neb.  Oregon, which tallied an 18-14 overall record and a 9-9 mark in league play, made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for just the third time in school history.

This will Kansas State’s first visit to famed McArthur Court in more than 40 years when the Wildcats tallied a 92-58 win on Dec. 21, 1965.  K-State owns a 2-1 edge in the all-time series.

Last season, the Pac-10 held a 7-5 edge over the Big 12 in Hardwood Series games.  Overall, the Big 12 posted an 11-8 advantage between the conferences in regular season and postseason play.  The 12 contests averaged more than 10,000 fans, drawing a total of 123,035 to the arenas.

The majority of the games are scheduled for December 4-7, with three taking place outside the four-day series window.  Each match-up is a return from 2007.  The 2009 games in the series will be played December 3-6, while meetings in 2010 will take place December 2-5.  After this season, new pairings will be in place for the next two years of the arrangement.

Additional components of the series, including the times and television information will be announced at a later date.

The remainder of Kansas State’s schedule will be released at a later date.
