KC Catbackers to Honor Dr. Wefald Thursday

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas City Catbackers will present an endowment in honor of Kansas State University President Jon Wefald at halftime of Thursday’s men’s basketball game with Southern Miss at the Sprint Center, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Wefald will address the crowd following the presentation and a short film recapping his remarkable career will be played.

The Kansas City Catbackers Board of Directors recently adopted a resolution paying tribute to the retiring Wefald with the formation of the endowment for his contributions to the athletic department.  The Board declared that all donations made to the Ernie Barrett Endowment Fund during the 2008-09 academic year by its members would be made in the name of Dr. Wefald.

Wefald announced in May that he is retiring from his post as university president after 24 years at the end of the 2008-09 academic year.  He is credited with transforming an institution with declining enrollments, low faculty morale, limited research and graduate programs and a losing football program into a nationally-ranked top 10 land grant university. Because of his leadership, K-State leads among peer institutions with significant research and graduate programs and a highly competitive athletic program in the prestigious Big 12 Conference.

Those who are interested in donating to the endowment are asked to contact Gary Davidson at the Bank of Blue Valley at gdavidson@bankbv.com.  All contributions to the fund are tax deductable.
