K-State Football Announces 2014 Captains

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder announced prior to Saturday's Purple/White Spring Game that linebacker Jonathan Truman, center B.J. Finney, wide receiver Tyler Lockett, defensive end Ryan Mueller and quarterback Jake Waters have been chosen by their teammates to serve as captains for the 2014 season. In addition, Weston Hiebert has been named a special teams captain, while Dante Barnett and Curry Sexton are honorary captains.

Finney is the first offensive lineman in school history to serve as a team captain for three seasons and the fifth overall, joining linebackers Brooks Barta (1990-92), Mark Simoneau (1997-99) and Alex Hrebec (2009-11) along with quarterback Collin Klein (2010-12). Lockett, who was a captain last season, is the 30th two-year captain in school history while Mueller, Truman, Waters, Hiebert, Barnett and Sexton will serve in the role for the first time in their careers.

Kansas State returns 41 letterwinners, including 14 starters, from a team that turned a 2-4 start into an 8-5 finish that was capped by a victory in the 2013 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl over Michigan. Included in the 14 returning starters is a pair of All-Americans in Lockett and Mueller, as well as five other players who earned All-Big 12 honors in 2013.

Led by its 23rd-year head coach in Snyder, K-State opens the 2014 campaign on Saturday, August 30 with a matchup against Stephen F. Austin in Bill Snyder Family Stadium, a game that serves as the sixth annual K-State Family Reunion. Following a trip to Iowa State on September 6, the Wildcats return home for a nationally-televised primetime matchup against BCS National Championship Runner-Up Auburn on Thursday, September 18.
