Campbell Named to Bednarik Watch List

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State defensive end Ian Campbell is one of 75 players nationally and 10 Big 12 defenders to be named to the 2008 Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.

A senior All-America candidate, Campbell is also one of just 14 defensive ends on the list for the Bednarik Award, which is awarded annually to the best overall defensive player in college football.

Campbell, a two-time team captain and first team All-Big 12 performer, enters his senior season as one of the top defensive linemen in school history and currently has 16.0 sacks and 28.5 tackles for loss over the last two seasons. The Cimarron native, who is also a preseason candidate for the Nagurski and Lombardi Awards, tied the single-season school record with 11.5 sacks in 2006 and currently needs just two more sacks to enter the school’s top 10 career list.

Last season, Campbell totaled 45 tackles, including a team-best 11 tackles for loss and a Big 12-best four fumble recoveries. The defensive end also recorded 4.5 sacks and one interception, in which he returned for a score in a win at No. 7 Texas.

The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Eagle great. Mr. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame 69’ and the NFL Hall of Fame 67’.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced in early November and three finalists will be announced November 25. The winner of the 2008 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The formal presentation of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City on March 6, 2009.

The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee, and all members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the award.
