Wildcats Defeat USC at Coliseum in Countdown

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State’s bruising victory over USC during the 2001 season has been selected as the eighth-best road win in the last 25 years by the k-statesports.com staff in Powercat Passport’s countdown of the program’s top wins away from home.

Although Josh Scobey rushed for 165 yards and quarterback Ell Roberson ran for 119, it was the alert play of guard Nick Leckey recovering a Scobey fumble in the end zone, that provided the winning difference in the No. 12-ranked Wildcats’ 10-6 win over USC.

The K-State defense was up to the task, as they held 2002 Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer to 16-of-36 passing for 197 yards and 12 rushes for just 60 yards. USC threatened to win the contest in the final minutes, but a Palmer fumble at the end of a four yard scramble sealed the win for K-State.

The victory by K-State marked the 100th in head coach Bill Snyder’s coaching career and the 12th straight season-opening win.

The weekly countdown of k-statesports.com’s top-10 road games will continue each week through August 31, when the No. 1 road game of the past 25 seasons as selected by the staff at k-statesports.com is announced. The countdown is leading up to the Wildcats’ season opener at Auburn on Sept. 1.

Each week’s game will be announced on Thursday afternoon on k-statesports.com, with the webcast of the game available the next day.
