MANHATTAN, Kan. – A semifinalist in 2011, Kansas State senior defensive back Nigel Malone was named to the preseason watch list for the 2012 Jim Thorpe Award, which honors the best defensive back in college football, the Jim Thorpe Association announced Friday.

With Malone’s two designations over the last two years, the Wildcats have now had nine players up for the award since 1992, including two-time finalist Chris Canty (1995 and 1996), as well as 2002 winner Terence Newman.

Friday’s honor was the third of the week for Malone after being named to the Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch lists. It was the seventh honor for the Wildcats this week as Arthur Brown was named to the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy watch lists, Collin Klein to the Maxwell Award watch list and BJ Finney to the Rimington Trophy watch list.

A transfer from the community-college ranks prior to last season, Malone put together a solid first year in Manhattan as he earned All-America accolades from the Water Camp Foundation and Associated Press after picking off seven passes, a mark that led the Big 12 and was third nationally. The Manteca, Calif., product was also named a First Team All-Big 12 performer by the league’s coaches, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Malone was one of 35 defensive backs in the country and one of four from the Big 12 on the initial watch list for the Thorpe Award. The winner will be selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football awards on December 6 on ESPN.
