Largest Second Half Comeback Next on Countdown

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Wildcats put together an avalanche of points in the second half at Jack Trice Stadium to defeat Iowa State in the 1999 Big 12 opener, which was chosen as the seventh-best road win in the last 25 years by the k-statesports.com staff in Powercat Passport’s countdown of the program’s top wins away from home.

No. 15-ranked Kansas State trailed the Cyclones 28-7 at the half, as Iowa State quarterback Sage Rosenfels and running back Darren Davis pushed the offense to 332 total yards in the opening half.

The Wildcats opened the second half with a stalled drive led by Jonathan Beasley, who was replaced for the remainder of the half by senior Adam Helm. Helm brought the Wildcats to within 14 at the 5:28 mark with a two-yard touchdown run. K-State stuffed the Cyclones’ ensuing drive and immediately took advantage, as David Allen scored on an electrifying 94-yard punt return with 1:58 play in the third.

The comeback continued as Frank Murphy scored on an 18-yard run with 10:01 to play in the fourth to even the contest at 28. Helm pushed over the goal line with 2:34 to play to seal the comeback for the Wildcats. The K-State defense stiffened in the second half to allow just 74 total yards to the Cyclones in the final 30 minutes.
