Football Opens Training Camp Monday

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State football program begins preparations for its 113th season of intercollegiate football and its third under head coach Ron Prince on Monday.

K-State returns 42 lettermen, including 14 regular starters  from last season’s squad and 28 total players who made at least one start, and head into camp with a very talented and experienced two-deep.

The Wildcats, who return ample firepower on offense from last season, will be provided the opportunity to build on a 2007 season that saw the offense average 418 yards a game while setting 20 school team and individual records. K-State, which will be led by junior and two-year starter Josh Freeman at quarterback, scored 20 or more points in all but one game last season and 30 or more in eight contests while averaging 275 yards a game through the air.

The Wildcat defense, led by All-America candidate Ian Campbell, will look to take the next step and bounce back in 2008 from last year’s 5-7 campaign as 19 players return after earning at least one start last season, giving the defense plenty of depth and experience heading into the season.

K-State enters the 2008 season with three national award candidates in Campbell, Freeman and Brooks Rossman. Campbell will look to become K-State’s first-ever three-time first team All-Big 12 selection in 2008 as he is a candidate for all major defensive player of the year awards, while Freeman will look to become K-State’s most prolific passer in school history and enters the season as an All-America candidate. Rossman was one of the nation’s leading place-kickers in 2007 and will contend for Lou Groza Award honors in 2008.

The lone opportunity for the general public to see the 2008 Wildcats prior to the season opener will be on Saturday, August 9, as players and coaches will be available for autographs along the east concourse of Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The autograph session for fans will take place from 4-6 p.m. and will be in conjunction with Media Day activities.

The Wildcats will open their 2008 season Saturday, August 30, at home against North Texas. The contest, which will feature the 2008 Ring of Honor class induction, will kick at 6:05 p.m.
