Mastrud Nominated for Good Works Team

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State junior tight end Jeron Mastrud is one of 71 nominees for the 17th-annual Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works team, Allstate Insurance Company and the AFCA have announced.


Mastrud, who started nine games as a sophomore, is one of 45 players from the Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) and one of just eight players from the Big 12 Conference to be nominated for the team.


Mastrud has been an active part in the community since his arrival as a freshman in 2006. The Beaverton, Ore., native has been a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has volunteered his time in various community service programs such as Read and Achieve, Walkin' With a Wildcat Mentoring Program, the Special Olympics Sports Clinic and Adopt an Angel.


On the field, Mastrud has played in 24 career games for the Wildcats, including 17 earning career starts. After a 17-reception, 235-yard effort as a freshman, his production increased during his sophomore season as he recorded 30 grabs for 316 yards.


Allstate and AFCA have teamed up to honor the college football players whose involvement with charitable organizations and community service contributions stand out among the more than 50,000 student-athletes participating in football at all four-year collegiate institutions.


From the 71 nominations submitted by sports information directors on behalf of their team, a special selection committee assembled by the AFCA and Allstate will select two 11-player Good Works Teams one composed of players competing in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A) and a combined team representing players competing in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA), Divisions II, III, and the NAIA.
