Wildcats Defeat ?12th Man? Next on Countdown

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State’s first win against Texas A&M in College Station in 83 years was voted as the fourth-best road win in the last 25 years by the k-statesports.com staff in Powercat Passport’s countdown of the program’s top wins away from home.

K-State entered this Oct. 19, 1996 contest ranked 19th in the nation and rolled off 13 consecutive points in the first quarter after an A&M field goal to take a 13-3 lead. Running back Mike Lawrence capped a 15-play drive with a four-yard touchdown run with 3:33 to play in the quarter for the Wildcats’ first points. Quarterback Brian Kavanagh scored the second K-State touchdown, as he crossed the goal line with two seconds remaining in the frame on a one-yard plunge.

The Wildcats extended the margin to 17 in the second quarter, as Andre Anderson hauled in a 10-yard pass from Kavanagh to close out the first half scoring. The K-State defense put together a stellar goal line stand, thwarting Texas A&M’s attempt at a late touchdown, keeping the score 20-3.

K-State scored it final points of the contest on a Jamie Rheem 33-yard field goal with 5:32 to play in the third quarter. The Aggies pieced together 17 points in the second half and was marching towards another score, but Chris Canty prevented the comeback by stripping Albert Connell of the ball with less than a minute to play to preserve the 23-20 victory. This was K-State’s first win in College Station in 83 years (1913). Entering this game, Texas A&M had won 44 of its previous 48 home games.
