Big D for Wildcats Next on Countdown

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The 13th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats used a stifling performance from its defense to defeat 15th-ranked Texas in a 1999 game in Austin, which was voted as the second-best road win in the last 25 years by the staff in Powercat Passport’s countdown of the program’s top wins away from home.

K-State’s defense forced six turnovers on the afternoon, all against quarterback Major Applewhite. Applewhite, who entered the contest with a streak of 136 consecutive passes without an interception, was intercepted three times including one by linebacker Mark Simoneau that was returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Applewhite also lost three fumbles. Kansas State’s defense limited the Texas offense to just 33 net yards rushing on 25 carries.

The Wildcats’ special teams wizard David Allen blew open a close game midway through the third quarter with a dazzling 74-yard punt return for a touchdown. The return was the seventh in Allen’s impressive career, which tied him for the NCAA career record.

Kansas State’s offense generated just one touchdown on the day – a 35-yard run by Allen in the fourth quarter – but won the field position battle. Jamie Rheem was a critical weapon in the contest as he set the K-State and Big 12 single-game record for field goals with five.
