Campbell Named Candidate for Senior Award

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State senior defensive end Ian Campbell is one of 30 candidates nationally in the running for the inaugural 2008 Lowe’s Senior Class Award for football, it was announced on Monday. Campbell is one of just three Big 12 players up for the award.

An excellent model of character, Campbell has been honored during the 2007 and 2008 seasons with the Black Lion Award, which is presented each year to a player who represent the character traits of leadership, courage, devotion to duty, self-sacrifice and above all an unselfish concern for the team ahead of himself. He has also been one of the most involved players on the team in terms of community service as he spearheaded the tornado cleanup in Manhattan last June and has also volunteered his time at local elementary schools.

A two-time First Team All-Big 12 selection, Campbell is currently tied for sixth in career sacks at Kansas State with 18.5. The Cimarron, Kan., native had his best game of the 2008 season last week against Louisiana as he recorded a career-best 11 tackles to go along with 1.5 sacks and one pass breakup. Campbell has also started 29-consecutive games for the Wildcats, a streak that began with the 2006 season opener against Illinois State.

The Lowe’s Senior Class Award is presented annually to NCAA Division I student-athletes in nine sports. The award focuses on classroom, character, community and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award was launched in 2001 to honor the attributes of college basketball seniors who fulfill their entire athletic eligibility and pursue their degree. Since then, the award has expanded to include men’s hockey, men’s lacrosse, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, and now football.

“Through this award, Lowe’s strives to shine the spotlight on student-athletes who are committed to their team and their community,” said Tom Lamb, Lowe’s vice president of marketing. “Each candidate on the first-ever football list has that commitment. To hear their stories is very encouraging and Lowe’s is honored to reward them for all-around achievement.”
