K-State Player Quotes

Senior Wide Receiver Jordy Nelson

On being the main offensive threat...

“We’re just running the plays the coaches are calling. That’s all we’re doing out there. They’re putting us in good situations and I think they’re anticipating what the defense is trying to do. They’re calling the right plays and things are working.”

On the team’s confidence after beating Texas...

“It gives us confidence, but I think we had a lot of confidence going into the game. I think we believe in what we’re able to do and we’re starting to figure out what we’re capable of if we play a good game and don’t shoot ourselves in the foot all the time. I think our confidence level is high but we’ve got to stay level-headed and not get too big of a head and keep practicing and working hard.”

On motivation after last year’s loss to Kansas...

“Last year was last year. We’ve got two different teams getting ready to play on Saturday. We’re just going to prepare well and hopefully play well and just do our job.”

On being ranked 24th in the AP Poll...

“I think it’s good. It’s where K-State belongs. We had been up there for a while and these last couple years we dropped off but we’re back up there. It’s good, recruiting-wise, because now we’ll always be on TV. Through our scores we’ll be able to get our name out to the nation. But, right now it’s just a number and it’s where you are at the end of the year, not at the beginning of the Big 12 that matters.”

Junior Wide Receiver Deon Murphy

On the rivalry with Kansas...

“We’ve really just been watching film, focusing on KU and the different schemes they like to do. Nobody has explained it yet. I’m so used to other rivalries right now. I know a lot about this rivalry just from watching TV a lot. I think we’ll be ready to go.”

On beating Texas...

It was real big. It made me realize that you could go out there and play anybody. There were a lot of upsets that happened this week and we were part of one of them. I feel real good about it coming into this next game ranked and we’re going to try to keep it that way. It felt really good going back home and beating them.”

On Kansas defensive back, Aqib Talib...

“I don’t know too much about him. I’ve heard a lot about him. I’ve heard he’s a really physical defensive back. Really long, nice size. You don’t find a lot of corners that size, like Jimmy Williams from Virginia Tech a while ago. He’s similar to him from what I’ve seen on film. I respect everyone but I don’t fear anyone. I think we can go out there and do the same thing, regardless of who the defensive back is. I don’t care who he is.”

On Josh Freeman...

“He finds the open receiver really quick, goes through his progressions well. I think he’s doing a tremendous job right now. But, we do have a lot of things to work on with the offense right now. I think this week we’re going to prepare well for this game. I think he’s going to get better and we’re going to get better as a team.”

Senior Defensive End Ian Campbell

On being ranked 24th in the AP Poll...

“Normally the rankings don’t matter that much, but it was good to get a little recognition. I was a part of the team when we were last ranked in 2004. That was more or less preseason because of how we did in 2003 and we were never ranked after that finishing 4-7. I’m glad that we are finally in the top-25 in the people’s eyes.”

On KU’s football team this season...

“The Jayhawks are a really talented team right now; they have a very potent offense. We just came off a really big win against Texas. You can kind of look at it in comparison to last year in the same respect. It is the beginning of the season for both teams and we are different teams than we were last year. It is still a very big game because of the rivalry coming from the same state, brothers and sisters being different fans of K-State or KU; it is going to have a lot of things going on.”

On his feelings after losing at KU last season...

“I took a lot into that game personally, so it hurt to lose. You have to get ready for the next opponent, so you can’t hold on to that forever you just have to keep moving on. It hurt a lot when we lost last year, but I was getting ready for the bowl game shortly after that.”

On the defensive highlights from the Texas game...

“The best thing that we did defensively is that we went in there and did exactly what our game plan was. Our game plan was to shut down Jamaal Charles shut down their running game and get after Colt McCoy and that is what we did. We will have a different aspect going into this game. KU has a few more dynamic things that they do and they have a comparable receiver corps, with Aquib (Talib) and Kerry (Meier) taking some snaps at wide receiver. We’ll have to look into that a little bit and see what happens.”

Sophomore Quarterback Josh Freeman

On KU’s junior defensive back Aquib Talib...

“He is a lock-down corner, one of the best in our league. It is tough to get anything by him. He’s big, he’s fast, he’s got long arms and he makes a lot of plays. It is going to be a challenge throwing the ball in his direction.”

On Big 12 competition...

“Every conference game is a big game this year. We have a lot of good teams in the (Big 12) North and the (Big 12) South. We can’t take any conference weeks for granted. We have to go out and play our best every week.”

On the difference between this season’s team from last season...

“I don’t know what it is, but there is something special about this team. Everyone comes out and works hard every week and comes out to play on Saturdays very hard. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
