Campbell Added to Hendricks Watch List

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State sophomore defensive end Ian Campbell has been added to the Hendricks Award Watch List, the Ted Hendricks Foundation announced Tuesday. The Ted Hendricks Award, named after the former Miami All-American and NFL Hall of Famer, is given annually to the nation's top defensive end.

Campbell continues to prove that he is among the nation’s elite pass rushers in 2006, as seven games into the season, he has collected 38 total tackles, the second-most of any Big 12 defensive lineman, with 12.5 of those coming behind the line of scrimmage.

In his first career start, Campbell collected a career-high eight tackles, three sacks for 17 yards and five tackles for a total loss of 21 yards en route to Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors against Illinois State. Then, he recorded six tackles, two for a loss of 14 yards, with one sack in the win over Marshall and added two sacks and seven stops against Louisville.

The Cimarron, Kan., native is currently tied for fifth nationally and second in the Big 12 with 1.07 sacks a game and is seventh nationally and tops in the Big 12 in tackles for loss at 1.71 a game.

With his 12.5 tackles for loss and his 8.0 sacks through seven games, Campbell is inching closer to the K-State single-season record books. The sophomore needs 5.5 more tackles for loss to break into the top 10 and just one more sack to move into 10th place on the charts. He also has collected at least one sack in five of seven games this season.

Campbell is the fifth Wildcat to be named to preseason watch lists for awards as junior punter Tim Reyer was named to the Ray Guy Award watch list, junior wide receiver Jordy Nelson is a candidate for the Biletnikoff Award, senior linebacker Brandon Archer was named to the Butkus and Nagurski Awards watch lists, and senior offensive lineman Greg Wafford is up for both the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy.
