K-State in 12th at UTSA Oak Hills Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Kansas State men's golf team finished two rounds of play Monday at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational in 12th place at the par 71, 6,765-yard Oak Hills Country Club. The Wildcats finished the day with a 22-over par 306 in round one and a 6-over 290 in round two to to sit at 30-over par 598 entering Tuesday's final round.

Oklahoma holds the tournament lead, carding a four-over 288 in round one and an even-par 284 in round two. The Sooners' Abraham Ancer, as well as Andrew Noto from Louisiana-Lafayette, are tied for first after shooting a two-under par 139.

"We finished today with a 16-shot improvement from morning to afternoon," head coach Tim Norris said. "That was obviously good to see and much needed. I was really proud of the guys for hanging in there."

K-State's Curtis Yonke finished with a six-over par 148, shooting 76 and 72 in the first and second rounds, respectively. He is currently tied for 31st with Roman Robledo of Houston at the end of day one.

Kyle Weldon, Kyle Smell and Ben Juffer each shot a eight-over par 150, which placed them in a three-way tie for 42nd. Rounding out the Wildcat lineup was Chase Chamberlin, who shot a 36-hole score of 11-over par 153.

"We are only 10 shots out of fifth place. I know the score does not look great right now. We kind of dug ourselves a hole in that first round. I hope the guys can come back tomorrow and put together a real solid score."

Yonke's low score in Monday's afternoon round followed a solid score of 73 on Saturday at The Quary, one-round event with Wichita and Iowa State where only individual scores were kept. The event served a s a warm-up for the spring season. Smell shot a 75 on Saturday, while Chamberlin and Weldon were two-strokes behind him at 77.

The final round of the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational is scheduled to tee off from holes No.1 and No. 10 at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday. Live scoring for the event can be followed at www.golfstat.com. Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com following the conclusion of the event.
