Wildcats Open Season with Lowest Round of the Year

PALM DESERT, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf team opened up its spring season by firing a 1-under par 287 Friday in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club.

The Wildcats shot their low round of the season, topping their previous low round of 288 during the third round of the Jack Nicklaus Invitational on September 29. The Wildcats are in fourth place after the first 18 holes, one shot behind Denver and two strokes shy of No. 15 Texas Tech. Second-ranked Oregon leads the event at 7-under par 281.

"The guys did a great job today. I am really proud of how they competed," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It was not our best day ball striking-wise, but they did a good job of managing their misses and did a much better job controlling their emotions."

The Wildcats were led by Seth Smith, Matt Green and Trent Evans, who are all tied for 14th place at 1-under par 71. Three shots behind the trio is Hank Simpson, who is tied for 50th at 2-over par 74. Connor Knabe is tied for 85th after carding 5-over 77.

UC Santa Barbara's Zach Smith finished Friday's opening round atop the individual leaderboard at 5-under par 67. He leads a group of four golfers that are tied for second at 3-under par.

"It is only one round, but I think it goes a long way in validating the things we have been working on, especially attitude and toughness." Robbins said. "We just have to keep with the process and keep improving."

The final two rounds of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate begin at 7:50 a.m. (PT) on Saturday and Sunday.
