K-State Tied for Third After Two Rounds in California

PALM DESERT, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf moved up one spot on the leaderboard in round two as it carded a 6-over par 294 Saturday and holds a 36-hole score of 5-over par 581 at the 2015 Desert Intercollegiate held at the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club.

The Wildcats are buoyed by two players that sit in the top 15, Seth Smith and Matt Green, both of whom are within striking distance of a top-three finish.

"I am really proud of how the guys competed today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The conditions were much tougher and we got off to a very slow start, but they hung in there and played the back nine really well."

Smith fired 1-under par 71 to finish the second round tied for fourth place at 2-under par 142. He is one of seven players tied for fourth. One shot behind Smith is Green, who is tied for 11th at 1-under par 143. Smith jumped up 10 spots from his Friday finish while Green moved up three.

Connor Knabe tallied the team's third-lowest score of the day by carding a 3-over par 75. He is tied for 70th at 8-over par 152. Hank Simpson, who is tied for 55th at 6-over par, fired a 4-over par 76 on Saturday. Trent Evans is tied for 80th at 9-over par 153.

He now sits 10-under par 134 heading into Sunday's final round, six shots ahead of the nearest competitor.

"We are in the last group for the final round and that is all you can ask for," Robbins said. "It will be a great experience for this young group."

Sunday's final round will begin at 7:50 a.m. (PT). Live scoring from Palm Desert can be found at golfstat.com while updates from the 2015 Desert Intercollegiate will be available at kstatesports.com as soon as they are made available.
