K-State Takes Fourth in Spring Opener

PALM DESERT, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf team battled wet conditions on Sunday to finish in fourth place in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club. The Wildcats finished at 9-over par 873 as the squad held off No. 2 Oregon, which finished at 14-over par 878.

K-State was led by a pair of players that finished in the top 10 in Seth Smith and Matt Green. Smith tied for fifth place at 3-under par 213 after carding a 1-under par 71 on Sunday, while Green tied for eighth at even-par 216. It was the second top-10 finish for both golfers this season.

"I am really proud of the guys this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Seth and Matt were solid all week and Connor (Knabe) really came through with a great round today. As a team, the guys are getting better. They are buying into the process and it is great to see them experience some success."

Knabe shot an even-par 72 in Sunday's final round to tie for 48th at 8-over par 224, while Hank Simpson tied for 63rd at 10-over par 226. Trent Evans tied for 72nd at 13-over par 229.

No. 35 TCU won the team competition by recording a 9-under par score of 855. The Horned Frogs fired a 5-under par 283 in Sunday's round to top No. 15 Texas Tech by one stroke.

Texas Tech's Clement Sordet captured the individual crown with a score of 11-under par 205. The next closest competition was TCU's Paul Barjon, who was four strokes behind Sordet at 7-under par 209.

"We still have a way to go, but I am very pleased with the progress we are making," Robbins said. "We held our own against some of the best teams in the country, and I know the experience they gained today playing in the final pairing will pay dividends down the road. We just need to keep working and are looking forward to getting back after it in Louisiana next week."

Kansas State returns to action March 2-3, as the Wildcats participate in the Louisiana Classics held at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, Louisiana.
