Green Leads Wildcats at Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. - The Kansas State men's golf team continued its spring slate Monday with the first and second rounds of the Louisiana Classics at the par-72, 7,098-yard Oakbourne Country Club. The Wildcats are currently in 14th place at 19-over par 595.

K-State is led by Matt Green, who is tied for 12th place at 1-under par 143 after firing a 5-under par 67 in round two to jump 45 spots up the leaderboard. Green is looking for his third top-15 finish this season.

"It was a tough day today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "I did not think our preparation this past week was very good and it showed. I was really proud of Matt for how he bounced back after a poor first round."

Six shots behind Green are Seth Smith and Trent Evans, who are tied at 48th place after carding a 5-over par 149. Redshirt sophomore Hank Simpson is in 76th place at 10-over par 154, while Connor Knabe is tied for 78th at 12-over par 156.

"As a team we just made way too many mistakes, and it is hard to get any momentum when you give away shots like we do," Robbins said. "I am looking forward to seeing how they respond tomorrow. We talk all the time about being tough and not giving up, and tomorrow provides us a great opportunity to bounce back."

Middle Tennessee State's Payne Denman and Illinois' Thomas Detry are tied for first in the individual competition, each with a score of 7-under par 137. Top-ranked Illinois leads the team competition after firing a 19-under par 557. The Illini have four players in the top 10 through two rounds.

Round three of the Louisiana Classics is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday morning. Live scoring for the event is available at www.golfstat.com. Final results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as they are made available.
