FRESNO, Calif. - With tough greens and a soft breeze throughout the day, the Kansas State men's golf team finished two rounds of play at the Fresno State Lexus Classic in ninth place at the par 72, 6,950-yard Sunnyside Golf Course.

"It was a case of if you hit a good shot, you were rewarded, and if you were off just by a little bit, you were going to face a tough up and down," said Wildcat head coach Tim Norris.

The Wildcats carded a 38-over par 758 in two rounds of play to put themselves into a position to finish in the top five on Tuesday. The San Diego State Aztecs, ranked No. 10 in the nation, holds the tournament lead heading into the final round, carding a one-over par 721.

The individual leader for the day was Pacific's Alex Johnson, who shot a 7-under par 137 through two rounds.

Wildcat freshmen Thomas Birdsey and Jack Watson, along with sophomore Ben Juffer, were the top individuals for K-State on Monday, shooting a 7-over par 151 to finish day one in a tie for 40th. Watson shot a one-over par 73 in the second round after shooting a 6-over in round one.

"We had far too many sixes on par-fives and not for any one reason. Overall, we have a chance to put together a pretty respectable finish if we go out and play a good round tomorrow," Norris said.

Rounding out the K-State lineup was freshman David Klaudt, sophomore Curtis Yonke and senior Ross Geubelle. Klaudt finished the day carding a 17-over 161, putting him in a tie for 92nd, Yonke carded a 9-over 153 which was good for a tie for 56th on the day, including a 1-under par 71 in the first round. Senior Ross Geubelle finished day one with a 12-over par 156 to put him in a tie for 67th.

"We saw some real bright spots today. Curtis (Yonke) had a really good opening round and Jack (Watson) came back this afternoon with a one-over par round in the second round," said Norris.

The final round of the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic is scheduled to tee-off on holes No.1 and No. 10 at 8:00 a.m. (PST) Tuesday. Live scoring for the event can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
