Cats Have Three in the Top 20 After First Round

OPELIKA, Ala. - On a warm Sunday at the par 72, 7,149-yard Grand National Lake Course, the Kansas State men's golf team finished the first round of the Tiger Invitational tied for third place after carding a 7-over par 295.

Junior Seth Smith along with sophomores Matt Green and Connor Knabe were the top individuals for the Wildcats as all three are currently in the top 20. Smith carded a 1-under par 71 to put him in a tie for fifth, while Green carded an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for seventh. Knabe fired a 2-over par 74 to tie for 17th after day one.

"I thought we did a really good job hanging in there today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We made some mistakes, but every one of our guys bounced back after a bad hole and stayed committed to the process."

Rounding out the Wildcat lineup were sophomore Hank Simpson and freshman Trent Evans. Simpson carded a 6-over-par 78, which puts him in a tie for 61st. Evans finished the day with a 7-over 79, putting him in a tie for 70th.

"It is a cliché in golf, but if we can learn how to stay focused one shot at a time then good things can happen, and we are definitely improving in that area," Robbins said. "Tomorrow presents a great opportunity as we get to be paired with another top-10 team in Auburn.

The Tigers lead the field by carding a 2-over par 290. UNCG's Taylor Coalson is the top overall performer after one round, shooting a 4-under par 68.

Kansas State will be back in action Monday morning at 9:15 a.m., for round two of the Tiger Invitational. Live results can be followed on, while results will be posted at at the conclusion of the round.
