Kinney Leads the Wildcats at Desert Shootout

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - After a rough start to the spring last week, the Kansas State men's golf team rebounded at the Desert Shootout by carding a 9-under par 279 in round one and is in second place heading into Friday's second round.

The Wildcats are two strokes behind tournament leader Pacific, which carded an 11-under par 277. In third place is Eastern Michigan, which fired an 8-under par 280. Virginia Commonwealth is sitting in fourth place with a 7-under par 281, while Wichita State and Xavier are tied for fifth at 6-under par 282.

"We had a good today," said head coach Tim Norris. "The conditions were good and I think the course was there for the taking. Both Joe Kinney and Joe Ida really capitalized today. They both felt really confident coming in because they each had good practice rounds yesterday. I know Mitch (Gregson) is looking forward to tomorrow's round. Curtis (Yonke) had a really good score to help us out. It was a good day by the Cats and it was nice to see some red numbers."

The Wildcats were led by senior Joe Kinney, who fired a 5-under par 67 and is one stroke behind individual leader Alex Johnson of Pacific.

One stroke behind Kinney is Joe Ida, who is tied for fourth after shooting a 4-under par 68. Mitchell Gregson and Curtis Yonke each carded an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 37th heading into the second round.

Jason Schulte carded a 7-over par 79 to tie for 92nd, while Ben Juffer, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 98th after a 9-over par 81.

The second round of the Desert Shootout will begin Thursday at 8:30 a.m. (CST) with golfers starting on the No.1 and 10 tees. Results will be posted on when made available.
