GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Kansas State men's golf team turned in an even-par 288 during Thursday's first round of the 2014 Desert Shootout at the par-72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Country Club. The Wildcats enter Friday's second round tied for ninth place with in-state rival Kansas and trail overall team leader Southern Utah by nine shots.
"Our scores were decent but not great," said head coach Tim Norris. "A good round tomorrow will certainly move us up the leaderboard. The course is in great shape but the greens are a little softer than we have seen in years past, so scoring conditions are great. We just need to pick up a couple shots here and there. It was good to count four solid scores today, but we need to be a little bit lower tomorrow."
Seth Smith led the Wildcats in scoring as he fired a 2-under 70 while Kyle Weldon recorded an even-par 72. Daniel Wood and Connor Knabe carded a 1-over 73 and Alex Carney notched a 5-over 77.
Playing as individuals, David Klaudt and Tyler Norris turned in a 1-over 73 and 5-over 78, respectively.
Northern Iowa's Glen Walls finished Thursday's opening round atop the individual leaderboard at 6-under 66.
Friday's second round will begin with an 8 a.m. (MT), shotgun start, while Saturday's final round will get underway with a 7:30 a.m. (MT), shotgun start.
