Goodyear, Ariz. – The Kansas State men’s golf team fired a 4-over 288 to close out the first day of action in the 2013 Desert Shootout in 14th place, sitting just eight shots back from the third. Playing at the par-71, 6,925-yard Palm Valley Golf Course for the second time in a month, the Wildcats sit three shots ahead of in-state rival Kansas entering Friday’s second round.

“We are 14th out of 16 teams, but we are only eight shots out of third. So it is tightly bunched,” said head coach Tim Norris. “I thought our guys played pretty well today, but it was just a couple of holes here and there and getting a solid fourth score, because that is all we are missing.

"Today’s finish does not look really good right now, but I like the way we are playing.”
After finishing the Wildcats’ last event in a tie of 81st, senior Ben Juffer bounced back with a 2-under 69 to end the opening round tied for 13th place. Thursday’s finish marked the first sub-70 round for Juffer since last October’s Pacific Invitational, where he carded a final-round 66.
Junior Daniel Wood recorded an even-par 71 on Thursday afternoon to finish the first round in tie for 31st. Senior co-captain Curtis Yonke and junior Tyler Norris, who is playing as an individual, each carded a 1-over 72 on Thursday to end the first day of action in a tie for 44th.
Rounding out the scoring lineup for K-State were Matt Green and Kyle Weldon, who are currently tied for 76th place after notching a first-round 5-over 76.
Thomas Pieters of Illinois currently sits atop the individual leaderboard after he fired a 6-under 65 on Thursday. On the team side, Tulsa recorded a first-round 274 to lead BYU by one stroke.
