GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Kansas State men's golf team finished one round of play at the Desert Shootout in 11th place at the par 72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Course on Thursday.

The Wildcats shot a 2-over par 290 on the day, just two stroke shy of a tie for seventh place. The team was led by Ben Juffer and Kyle Smell as each carded a 1-under par 71 on Thursday to sit in a tie for 16th place.

Curtis Yonke shot a 1-over par 73, ending the day tied for 37th. Rounding out the Wildcats' lineup was David Klaudt and Kyle Weldon, who each hit a 3-over par 75.

"We are probably lacking a score in the sixties, and then another round around par," head coach Tim Norris said. "We are not in bad position after round one, but five or six shots better could help us."

Competing as individuals, Alex Carney and Chase Chamberlin both carded a 4-over par 76 in round one.

Brigham Young currently leads the field, shooting a 14-under par 274 in the first round. Four strokes behind the Cougars was San Diego, which holds the top individual in Alex Ching at 8-under par 64. Two strokes behind Ching are Tulsa’s Mark Mumford and BYU’s Zachary Blair.

"We are the first ones off tomorrow, so hopefully we can set a pace and get a little momentum going," Norris said. "Our scores have been pretty good in practice and have been on par in Manhattan. I am very optimistic on these next two rounds."

Round two of the Desert Shootout, hosted by the University of Denver, will tee-off from No. 1 and 10 tees on Friday at 8:30 a.m., before Saturday’s final round. Results from Friday’s action can be found at www.k-statesports.com at the conclusion of the day.
