March 23, 2012

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Following a 3-under par 285 performance in Friday’s second round, the Kansas State men's golf team moved up two spots on the leaderboard into ninth place at the Desert Shootout at Palm Valley Golf Course.

Combined with their 2-over par 290 performance on Thursday, the Wildcats are now six strokes shy of fifth place. Kyle Smell leads the team with a 1-under par 143 through two rounds following an even-par 72 during Friday's round to end tied for 23rd place.

Curtis Yonke shot a 1-under par 71 on the round, while Kyle Weldon carded a 3-under par 69, bringing both of their two-day totals to an even-par 144 (28th place). Rounding out the Wildcats lineup was Ben Juffer, who shot a 2-over par 74 on the day, bringing his total to 1-over par 145 to tie for 39th. David Klaudt shot a 1-over par 73 and brought his two-day total to a 4-over par 148 (59th place).

"Our scores were a little bit better today," head coach Tim Norris said. "Every little missed putt is hard to get back when everyone is making so many birdies."

Competing as individuals, Chase Chamberlin and Alex Carney shot a 3-under par 69 and a 5-over par 77 respectively on the day for the Wildcats.

Brigham Young was able to hold on to lead the field, shooting a 14-under par 274 in the second round. They currently lead the field, with a 28-under par 548 total throughout two days. The Cougars' Justin Keiley climbed four spots on the leaderboard to end the day tied for first place, shooting a 7-under par 65 in the second round. He currently shares the top position with San Diego's Alex Ching.

"You see all the missed opportunities and you can see where that would put you on the leader board," Norris said. "Today, there were just five team scores better than ours. If we have that kind of performance tomorrow, we will do better and hold our own in the standings."

The third and final round of the Desert Shootout, hosted by the University of Denver, will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Results from Saturday's action can be found at www.k-statesports.com at the conclusion of the event.
