Wildcats Conclude Play at Desert Shootout

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Kansas State men’s golf team carded a final-round score of 11-over par 295 on Saturday to finish the Desert Shootout in 14th place at 25-over 877 at the par-71, 6,925-yard Palm Valley Golf Course.

“Our scores were more comparative with the rest of the field today,” head coach Tim Norris said. “I thought our guys did well today. If we would have been a little more competitive in the first two rounds, it would have been a much better final result.”

Senior Curtis Yonke improved seven spots on the leaderboard with a final-round score of 2-over par 73, tying for 33rd with a three-round mark of 4-over par 217.

Daniel Wood bounced back from a 78 on Friday and made a 14-spot improvement by carding a 1-over par 72 on Saturday. Wood finished tied for 56th at 8-over par 221. Ben Juffer equaled his Friday score of 5-over par 76 on Saturday to tie with Wood for 56th.

Sophomore Kyle Weldon and freshman Matt Green rounded out the scoring lineup for K-State. Weldon carded a 3-over par 74 on Saturday to complete the event at 10-over par 223, tying for 66th. Green finished two strokes behind Weldon with a 76 on Saturday to tie for 76th at 12-over par 225.

Playing as an individual, Tyler Norris tied for 81st at 13-over par 226 following a 7-over par 78 during Saturday’s final round.

BYU ran away with the team championship as the Cougars finished with a 54-hole score of 14-under par 838, 10 strokes ahead of second-place Denver. Zachary Blair of BYU won the individual competition at 15-under par 198.

Kansas State is back in action April 8-9 at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Wildcats are the defending team champion, while Juffer returns to the event after winning the individual title with a school-record score of 12-under par 198.
