GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Kansas State men's golf team finished the final round of play at the Desert Shootout tied for fourth place with San Diego at the par 72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Course on Saturday.

K-State had a 7-under par 281 performance in Saturday's third round and was able to climb seven spots following the first round. Combined with its 2-over par 290 performance on Thursday and 3-under par 285 showing Friday, the Wildcats' three-round total of 8-under par 856 was just six strokes shy of third place.

Curtis Yonke and Ben Juffer finished in the top-20 for K-State. Yonke shot a 4-under par 68 on Saturday to bring his three-day total to a 4-under par 212. He ended in a tie for 12th place to secure his fourth top-20 finish of the season. Juffer carded a 3-under par 69 on the day to bring his three-day total to a 2-under par 214. He began the day tied for 39th place, but successfully climbed the leader board to finish tied for 17th to obtain his third top-20 finish of the season.

"We had a little sense of accomplishment," head coach Tim Norris said. "To start the tournament in 11th and climb to fourth was great."

The Wildcats’ Kyle Weldon ended tied for 21st with a 1-under par 71 in the third round. He brought his three-round total to a 1-under par 215. Rounding out the team's lineup, Kyle Smell carded a 2-over 74 par third round to end tied for 31st place. David Klaudt ended tied for 57th with a 1-over par 73 performance on Satuday.

"We played some good golf these last few days. There are still some opportunities to score a little bit better," Norris said. "Overall, I'm pleased with the direction we are headed in. We still have a long way to go."

Competing as individuals, Chase Chamberlin and Alex Carney shot a 6-over par 78 and a 1-over par 73 respectively on the day. Chamberlin ended tied for 67th, while Carney tied for 80th.

Wichita State climbed three spots on the leader board and ended the three-day event at 28-under par 836 Saturday to grasp the Shootout's title. The Shockers' Rafael Becker carded a 6-under par 66 third round to bring his total score to 14-under par 202 to secure the shootout's individual title.

"Not a great day for scoring," Norris said. "There was obviously a tougher hole location, but the guys were pretty patient and did not try to force the issue. We look forward to getting back out there."

The Wildcats will take a brief hiatus before they return to action, April 9-10, at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at the Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., to end the regular season.
