Blustery Day Hinders Wildcats

AUSTIN, Texas - With winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour, the Kansas State men's golf team finished the first day of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in 13th after carding a 36-hole score of 41-over par 609 at the par-71, 7,412-yard University of Texas Golf Course.

Texas leads the field at 11-over par 579, just one stroke ahead of second-place New Mexico. Big-12 foe Texas Tech is in third with an 18-over par 586. In fourth is LSU after carding a 22-over par 590. Reigning national champion Texas A&M is in fifth place after finishing the day with a 24-over par 592.

"Overall, it was pretty disappointing to come down here and not play our best golf," said head coach Tim Norris. "We play in wind all the time and we are well through our season, so we shouldn't be rusty. We had a lot of three-putts today because the greens are very challenging. I thought we did a very good job of playing to the safe side on our shots, but then we would walk away with a bogey.

"If we could have knocked off 15 strokes throughout the day, we would have finished in the middle-to-upper part of pack. But we were not the only team to struggle today. There were a lot of high scores out there. Fortunately, we have one more round here to get something going for the final two tournaments of the regular season."

Tied for the individual lead is New Mexico's John Caitlin and Ben Tewes of SMU after both carded an even-par 142.

Kansas State senior Mitchell Gregson led the Wildcats with a 6-over par 148 and is in a tie for 23rd. Joe Ida, who is coming off a thumb injury, is tied for 52nd with teammate Curtis Yonke after both fired 11-over par 153.

Joe Kinney finished with a 13-over par 155 in the first two rounds and is tied for 61st heading into the final round. Rounding out the Wildcat line-up on the first day was Jason Schulte, who carded a 21-over par 163 and is tied for 81st.

The Wildcats will tee off Tuesday from the No. 1 and No.10 tees beginning at 8 a.m. Live scoring is available on Results will be posted on as soon as they are made available.
