Wildcats in 11th at Gary Koch Invitational

GASTONIA, N.C. -- The Kansas State men's golf team sits in 11th place after two rounds of play at the Gary Koch Invitational at the par 72, 7,042-yard Gaston Country Club on Monday. The Wildcats carded a 13-over par 301 in the first round and were unable to improve in the second round with a 14-over par 302.

"It was a struggle today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The greens were very firm and fast. It is something we are not used to and we did not adjust very well. When the course is set up like this, it is imperative that you keep the ball below the hole and avoid short-side misses, and we did a very poor job of that today."

The Wildcats, who are at 27-over par 603, were led by Matt Green at 4-over par 148 to sit in a tie for 28th place. He carded a 1-over par 73 in the first round and a 3-over par 75 in the second round.

Connor Knabe sits just one stroke behind Green after tallying a 5-over par 149 to tie for 32nd through the first two rounds, while Seth Smith is tied for 38th at 6-over par 150.

Rounding out the Kansas State lineup is Hank Simpson and Trent Evans. Simpson carded a 4-over par 76 in the first round and an 8-over par 80 in the second to sit in a tie for 67th place at 12-over par 156. Evans shot an 8-over par 80 in both rounds to sit in a tie for 76th.

Florida State enters final-round play with the lead after firing a 15-under par 561. Florida State's Rowin Caron also holds the top individual position along with Kentucky's Cooper Musselman as both are at 7-under par 137.

"For us to be successful, we have to do the little things right and when we do not it is a little frustrating," Robbins said. "We just need to manage our game better and we can have a good bounce-back round tomorrow."

The final round of the Gary Koch Invitational will tee off at 8:00 a.m. (ET) on Tuesday. Results will be posted at www.k-statesports.com and www.golfstat.com at the conclusion of play.
