K-State Places 11th at Gary Koch Invitational

GASTONIA, N.C. -- The Kansas State men's golf team turned in a final-round score of 6-over 294 Tuesday to finish 11th in the Gary Koch Invitational at the par-72, 7,042-yard Gaston Country Club. The Wildcats finished the 54-hole tournament at 33-over par 897, six strokes shy of a tie for ninth.

"Overall we played a little better today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "With the rain last night, the greens were much softer, which made the course more scorable. We just did not make enough putts and did not really get any momentum."

Matt Green led the Wildcats throughout the tournament. The redshirt sophomore fired a 1-over par 73 on Tuesday to finish with a three-round total of 5-over par 221 and a 32nd-place tie. Connor Knabe and Seth Smith were also key players for K-State as they each finished tied for 36th after carding a 7-over par 223.

Hank Simpson tallied a 4-over par 76 on Tuesday to finish the tournament tied for 69th place at 16-over 232. Trent Evans rounded out the K-State scorecard in 72nd place at 18-over par 234.

Florida State held on to the top team honors after firing a three-round score of 22-under par 842 thanks to a final-round total of 7-under par 281. Auburn's Michael Johnson and Florida State's Rowin Caron finished atop the individual leaderboard at 8-under par 208.

"We are struggling right now as a team," Robbins said. "However, we just have to remain positive and use this as an opportunity for more growth and improvement and get ready for Iowa."

The Wildcats have a brief break before returning to action, April 18-19, as they participate in the Hawkeye Intercollegiate held at the Finkbine Country Club in Iowa City, Iowa. The event serves as the final tune-up prior to the Big 12 Championship, April 27-29, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
