Cats in First Place at Mizzou Intercollegiate

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Freshman Curtis Yonke carded a career-best score of 140 for two rounds to pace Kansas State as the Wildcats found themselves atop the leaderboard Monday after the first day of the Mizzou Intercollegiate. The Wildcats finished the first two rounds with a 5-under par 571 to take a one-shot lead at the par-72, 7,221-yard Club at Old Hawthorne.

One stroke behind the Wildcats in second place is Big-12 foe Nebraska, which finished the day at 4-under par 572. Tournament host Missouri is in third place after carding an even par 576. Posting a two-round score of 5-over par 581 and in fourth place is St. Mary's, while Kansas rounded out the top-five after ending the day with a 7-over par 583.

"The team is motivated and has a lot of pride," said head coach Tim Norris. "It really helps when you play on a beautiful day like today and the greens were the best we played on all year. The guys did a good job of hanging in there and posting some good team scores. Both our rounds were under par and it helps that we have some familiarity with the course. But the guys still had to go out there and make some good shots. It was a good day and I think the guys are excited to tee off tomorrow with the lead."

Senior Joe Ida is tied with Yonke in first place individually after shooting back to back 70's in the first two rounds to finish at 4-under par 140.

After starting slow in the first round, senior Mitchell Gregson rallied back in the second round and fired a 3-under par 69 to place him in a tie for eighth place with a combined score of 1-under par 143.

Playing as an individual, Ben Juffer is tied for 22nd place at 3-over par 147, the best 36-hole score of the freshman's young career.

Joe Kinney and Chase Chamberlin are both tied for 41st place after each carded a 6-over par 150.

The Wildcats will tee off Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as they are made available.
